Works for me
- Pros: Lightweight, works with my wide-gamut monitor (W-CCFL, not LED -- HP LP2475w), ambient lighting compensation, fairly unobtrusive calibration program
- Cons: Suction cups don't stick very well, so I usually lightly press it onto the screen during calibration, software updates require registration, USB cable seems a little weak (though I've had no problems with it). No automatic luminance calibration.
- Other Thoughts: After reading all the horror stories about the Huey, I was almost ready to get something else. I decided to give it a try, anyways. As I said above, the suction cups do not stick very well, even when tilting the monitor, so I just hold the device during calibration. The image was much cooler than default and a little bit more green, but after comparing it with prints I got from the lab (viewed with an LED light), they match. I'm satisfied, but the suction cups and requiring registration bump this down to a 4.
Pro Huey Multiple Monitors and Systems at their best
- Pros: I have worked in the large and grand format digital print industry for over 15 years and I am so happy that Pantone has produce an economical monitor profiler for my clients.
In the past when my clients said that they print looks okay on their screen I have always asked, "what color balance system are you using?" Of course the answer has been, "color balance, dah what?" Well if your client use this superb system they will be happy. Of couse they need to balance their monitor 3 to 4 times but it will then match Pantone color. Isn't that what you want is to use a color matching system for printing. If you using it for games then maybe it won't match but in the graphics and print industry you can not find a more accurate easy to use color matching system the Pantone. (No I am not paid by Pantone) my clients are happy and they include the giants advertisers you see wrapping buildings in LA and New York along with the a huge amount of brochure and other small print clients.
- Cons: Most people do not realize they should set up there color balance in a dark room just like Adobe Gamma control and then redo it 3-4 times just to train their eye. Today's computers and monitors are very accurate if you have a color matching system.
- Other Thoughts: I have balanced color for numerous prints send to several different printers (pending on if they where small print, large display or backlit and every print has been perfect). I just tell my printers to drag and drop the file as most all if not all professional RIP (raster image processing) know what aTpantone color should be.
- Pros: One of my dual asus monitors had a bit of a blue tinge and the other a bit of red before. Afterwards they are pretty close. Sliding a pic from one monitor to the next you can see just a slight variation, good enough for most but not for those who seek accurate . No two monitors are going to be exactly alike even the same brand and model. To get as close as possible buy two of the same monitors at the same time. The Huey Pro worked okay for me on my matte LCD screens but some have problems, from what I have read the glossy LCDs may not have good results but quality of this product is so low that one should be prepared for a possible defective product.
- Cons: Must reset monitor to default settings before use. Still have to fiddle with the brightness and contrast during initial setup. Hardware and software is very low end quality. Cannot set reminder to more than 14 days, have not figured out how to disable the splash screen – reminds me of something A*L, M$N or freeware does. Pantone definitely needs to hire someone more knowledgeable in software development and manufacture something that they can be proud of instead of this. If it was returnable (newegg’s no return software policy) it would definitely go back, not because it did not work but because the overdone multi layered packaging it came in probably cost more to manufacture than the actual physical Chinese product. Quality is as good as the headphones you get from an airline. I am not impressed at all but it did work as advertised for me. Will not buy this brand again. No bang for your buck at all.
- Other Thoughts: It worked on my matte LCD Screens. I wanted my 25.5" Asus monitor to match color to my 24" Asus monitor. Did I mention I dislike splash screens and product quality is low? Honestly, I personally would not buy again even if it sold for less than $20 and had free shipping. But it did work.
