Microsoft's latest OS, Windows 8, includes updates to some Windows 7 features that may allow for more intuitive use. The software was designed with interfaces for computers and tablets, but both devices can support either menu.

The tiled start-screen is modeled after the Live Tile system that Microsoft uses for Windows Phone. These icons are animated shortcuts that provide live updates for each program. For example, if you link your email account with Outlook, you'll receive an on-screen notification for every new message.

Windows 8, aside from its lack of a start button, has an alternate interface with certain similarities to Windows 7. The familiar program bar and desktop are there and can be easily accessed by left-clicking on the tiled screen. After viewing both menus once, pressing the Windows key toggles between the two.

There are different versions of the OS with different tools and were designed with different system needs in mind. Windows 8 is the basic upgrade from 7, Vista and XP with the new screen, integrated accounts and access to the Windows Store for apps.

Windows 8 Pro is Window 7 Professional's successor and offers increased security via programs like Encrypting File System and BitLocker. This iteration of the OS was designed with heavier use in mind. For businesses, Windows 8 Enterprise offers all of the programs found in other versions, except for Windows Media Center and pre-installed Microsoft Office Suites. Enterprise also has Windows To Go, which saves all of a user's files and preferences to a USB drive so they can access their customized OS from any computer.

Anyone whose laptop or desktop runs on Windows XP, Vista or 7 is eligible to upgrade to 8. Systems require processor speeds of 1 GHz or faster, 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM for a 32-bit device, 16 GB of disk space and a DirectX 9 graphics card to support the OS.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't fear change

Pros: With this and an ssd my pc boots in 10 seconds. After installing it I first did not like the layout but gave it some time. A couple of months later I have to say that I really do like its functionality. People are too quick to judge it now that it looks different and doesn't have the usual start button. Try it out, it runs all of my programs smoothly

Cons: The app store is horrible, spent $7 on a DVD program so that I could play dvds and it didn't work. Windows media player does NOT play dvds with this

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!!

Pros: Metro ... yep I actually like it even without a touchscreen. Customizable..easy to pin my most used apps and programs right where I want them. Stable...haven't had an issue with a single program. FAST...wow the boot times are amazing. Search feature is great. There are so many things to love about this OS.

Cons: None.....ok so it took a week or two to retrain my muscles to click in different places. Just because the way you do things have changed doesn't make it bad. Honestly if you aren't an old dog who can't learn new tricks then this OS is real easy to learn and actually quite efficient.

Other Thoughts: I recently built a new rig for my son and was hesitant to install this OS. I decided to take a chance and I am so glad I did. I have grown tired of building new systems and installing the same old.boring OS's. This is the first build in quite some time that actually felt like something fresh and new. He loves it as well. He is only 10 so he isn't set in his ways like most Windows users so he adapted to it like a fish in water. Oh and games are great on this as well if your a gamer. Overall this is a great system and I would recommend to anyone who isn't afraid of change.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst $100 I've ever spent

Pros: Not a single one.

Cons: Useless on a desktop. I wish I had bought Windows 7 or just installed 7 in a virtual box on my Mac. Last $100 I will ever give Microsoft. I want to work not spend my time figuring out how do get a desktop to work like a tablet. Might be okay on a tablet, but worst things I have ever seen on a desktop. Run one of the many good Linux distributions instead of buying this - or get a Mac.

Other Thoughts: Totally useless. You have been warned.

It's easier to steal than 7 also

Other Thoughts: If you can get used to the ui it is a good os. I would never pay for it though.

1 out of 5 eggsBad software

Pros: None

Cons: Hard to navigate, complicated, Tided to email accounts, It is so bad I feel like I was ripped off by Microsoft.

Other Thoughts: I thought Vista was bad. Do not waist your money like Vista Microsoft will have put out a new program soon Win 8 is a very poor attempt to have a Application based operating system. Windows 7 is the way to go.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: None... it is the same kernel used since Vista with tweaks to the interface that will drive you insane. Microsoft has been charging folks for new operating systems where the only difference is window dressings (how it looks and where things are placed)

Cons: It is entirely Con... I wish I had bought another copy of 7 for my home theatre rather than this garbage. Important management features are hidden... it likes to do what it wants not what you want. Total trash. I used to be pro Microsoft until this release... Read up on new pc sales with win 8...sales are tanking BADLY. It is also why Win 7 is still offered for sale.

The new launch area is filled with Xbox software, the xbox version of internet explorer (I would have never guessed you could make IE worse but they managed to) It does NOT come with media center, so expect to use the XBOX garbage that tries to sell you music rather than play what you have. It's ALL garbage and the launch area has the artwork of a 3 year old... square boxes that are 2 tone. Last nail in the coffin, if you wish to turn off your PC good luck. You have to go to settings in the launch area and force your computer to turn off as it prefers to sleep instead.

Other Thoughts: This is the worst idea since New Coke... Microsoft has just grabbed the golden ring of corporate mistakes.

Do yourself the favor and buy Win 7 instead... fast, rock solid, and you can have the computer do what YOU want it to do.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent First Try

Pros: It is not a big resource hog. Overall it is fast and snappy, I'm not waiting for long loading times. It does not seem to get in the way of gaming at all.

Cons: Overall I find Windows 8 to be confusing. Granted, part of this is just learning a new system and I'm sure it will eventually become easier to use. However, it seems it was designed with more of a touch screen focus. My system has a traditional screen with a mouse and keyboard, and many parts of the interface seem like they were not built with this in mind.

Windows 8 also feels rather disjointed. I can never tell when I'm going to be in the new "Metro" style interface or when it is going to require me to return to the classic desktop mode. This seems especially true when I'm adjusting settings. Some seem like they are only available in the classic control panel (which can be hard to find) and I can only access from "Metro".

In addition, I found the hybrid shut down (which is turned on by default) was causing my PS/2 keyboard to stay powered on even when the computer was shut down (not sleep mode). This is likely an incompatibility with my particular motherboard and Windows 8, because when I went to the motherboard company's website, it was listed as a known issue. Turning off hybrid shutdown fixed the issue.

Other Thoughts: I can see where Microsoft is going, and I think with some revisions it can be a great operating system. And for touch screen computers, it may already be a great operating system. However, for my more traditional PC, my overal impression is that it is trying to be two operating systems in one, and it is hard to tell which one you will be using for a certain task.

1 out of 5 eggsNot for Gamers

Pros: Nothing. It is a hybrid OS for touch users and desktop users and hybrids will never out do focused products.

Cons: Not compatible with a bunch of games. In fact, the program "Games for Windows" created by Microsoft isn't even compatible with Windows 8. I would start on how bad the interface is but I think there is enough people out there crying that I don't have to say much on that issue.

Other Thoughts: You might want the latest Microsoft OS thinking they will fix the issues but they won't. Do yourself a favor and get Win7.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: none

Cons: is not compatible with my motherboard. Sucks that windows doesn't even allow you to downgrade from an 8 to a 7.
