2 out of 5 eggsYes BUT

Pros: Upgradeable to 8.1 pro

Cons: Technically, this ver is upgrade-able to 8.1 pro, but had I to do it all over again, I would have seen the TRUE 8.1 pro 64 bit OEM for the same price. Now, as updates occur in future, will I be behind one level? When Microsoft changes to a costly update, will I have to pay sooner than if I had bought the current version to begin with for the same cost?

1 out of 5 eggsubuntu is far better

Pros: Everything works as far as programs/games compared to Linux where it is a challenge more often than not.

Cons: More difficult to use than Ubuntu in just about every way.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps Microsoft should hire some Linux people to work on the next windows to improve usability.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't do update

Pros: Windows 8 installed flawlessly on the new build and runs pretty stable. No crashing on my sons new gaming rig.

Cons: For some reason we cannot get onto the "Windows Store" to get the update to 8.1. I thought I would save a few bucks and buy the Windows 8 Pro and do the update rather than buy the full up Windows 8.1. What a mistake.

There is a whole community of people that cannot get to the "Windows Store". Unfortunately we didn't realize that until we installed it.

Other Thoughts: If you want Windows 8.1, buy the 8.1 media. If you want Windows 8, call a doctor and get some help.

1 out of 5 eggsBiggest mistake microsoft has ever made

Pros: Nothing. There is nothing good about this mess of an OS.

Cons: It is by far the ugliest UI I have ever seen, everything from the flat, sharp edged windows to the Vomit inducing Metro UI is garbage. Even the install screens are full of eye wrenching colors. I wouldn't buy this even if they put the windows 7 start menu back. It's just too ugly. I would rather use windows ME with BOB for a UI than this garbage.

Other Thoughts: Microsoft really messed up on this one. They EOLed XP and are trying to scare people away from windows 7, but the windows 8 usage has flattened out and is actually slipping, while windows 7 is gaining more market share. They said they will have the start menu back in windows 9, but what I've seen of the windows 9 start menu, they are trying to wedge the Metro look in there too, so I probably won't be buying that either.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your money

Pros: Win 9 to come soon. If you need an OS, go for it. Otherwise wait The thing I hate the most, out of many, is that you MUST have a Microsoft ID. The other things that really suck about Win 8 would make a list far to long to post here.

Cons: Google these and then double it.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best OS

Pros: Used W8 since beta. It is the fastest and the most reliable system ever. So far: no single problem. People who want to make it look and feel like W7 can do it in no time.

Average CPU usage during regular PC activity (e-mail/browsing/editing documents in Office) during 2 hours stretch is less then 2%. For comparison Ubuntu under similar load consumes 10-25%

Cons: for some hardware devices hard to find drivers.

Other Thoughts: People who don't like the "Start" screen just do not want to spend 5 minutes on customizing it. With the help of the customized Start screen I navigate 2-3 times faster then using XP/W7/Linux.

5 out of 5 eggsGood OS in Transition

Pros: Windows 8 is more stable and faster than my Windows 7 installs. Having a Win8 tablet makes be really appreciate the "Metro" apps. Win8 is a really good tablet OS (Dell Venue Pro and Surface Pro).

Windows 9 (Threshold) should be even better.

Cons: MS did not allow for old Start Menu and Desktop to be selected as options. Looks like Windows 9 (Threshold) will have this feature. Not a big deal for me personally but I don't understand why they did not leave in as an option.

2 out of 5 eggsPopular?

Pros: It works, sort of.

Cons: If I wanted a tablet, I would have bought a tablet and I won't rehash the issues others have posted. It gets two stars because it does do what Microsoft intended, even though not what the normal user wanted.

Other Thoughts: I received the Newegg email "Popular Windows OS Under $100" and was thinking that WIN 7 is on sale again, only to find a hype for Win 8, not even the slightly fixed 8.1, but the original garbage. It is only popular because it is forced on us via marketing structures and Microsoft not caring about what the normal folks want. 10 out of 12 people I know that have it want to trash it (and several of us have submitted to M$'s greed and gave them still more money to upgrade to Win 7.)

5 out of 5 eggsLove it...

Pros: Quick boot up especially on an SSD. Simple to use if you like new environments. Search is your friend in this version. Quick install. Nice Dual OS boot when installed on a separate drive.

Cons: For users that don't like change, they would have to give it a change and explore. Or simply stay in the past with Windows 7. Other than that there are no real cons.

Other Thoughts: This OS is for people that enjoy the advancement in software and technology. Exploring Windows 8 is the key to understanding what you can do with it and the PC.

1 out of 5 eggsThe more I use it...

Pros: ... the more I hate it.

Pros: Can be wiped out for replacement (though not easily).

Cons: Usage is unfriendly and time consuming, looks are below average, charms and metro are the biggest joke.

Other Thoughts: Being a computer technician for a living I have to support and repair Windows computers, including Windows 8. When faced with repairing a Windows 8 machine that BSOD's after booting, not allowing time to configure it for Safe Mode (which was easy to access in previous versions), the machine is next to useless. Booting from a Windows 8 DVD is also next to useless as it tells you to boot from the hard drive to repair or restore.

From a support persons point of view I recommend staying away from Windows 8.
