5 out of 5 eggsThe best OS

Pros: Used W8 since beta. It is the fastest and the most reliable system ever. So far: no single problem. People who want to make it look and feel like W7 can do it in no time.

Average CPU usage during regular PC activity (e-mail/browsing/editing documents in Office) during 2 hours stretch is less then 2%. For comparison Ubuntu under similar load consumes 10-25%

Cons: for some hardware devices hard to find drivers.

Other Thoughts: People who don't like the "Start" screen just do not want to spend 5 minutes on customizing it. With the help of the customized Start screen I navigate 2-3 times faster then using XP/W7/Linux.

5 out of 5 eggsGood OS in Transition

Pros: Windows 8 is more stable and faster than my Windows 7 installs. Having a Win8 tablet makes be really appreciate the "Metro" apps. Win8 is a really good tablet OS (Dell Venue Pro and Surface Pro).

Windows 9 (Threshold) should be even better.

Cons: MS did not allow for old Start Menu and Desktop to be selected as options. Looks like Windows 9 (Threshold) will have this feature. Not a big deal for me personally but I don't understand why they did not leave in as an option.

2 out of 5 eggsPopular?

Pros: It works, sort of.

Cons: If I wanted a tablet, I would have bought a tablet and I won't rehash the issues others have posted. It gets two stars because it does do what Microsoft intended, even though not what the normal user wanted.

Other Thoughts: I received the Newegg email "Popular Windows OS Under $100" and was thinking that WIN 7 is on sale again, only to find a hype for Win 8, not even the slightly fixed 8.1, but the original garbage. It is only popular because it is forced on us via marketing structures and Microsoft not caring about what the normal folks want. 10 out of 12 people I know that have it want to trash it (and several of us have submitted to M$'s greed and gave them still more money to upgrade to Win 7.)

5 out of 5 eggsLove it...

Pros: Quick boot up especially on an SSD. Simple to use if you like new environments. Search is your friend in this version. Quick install. Nice Dual OS boot when installed on a separate drive.

Cons: For users that don't like change, they would have to give it a change and explore. Or simply stay in the past with Windows 7. Other than that there are no real cons.

Other Thoughts: This OS is for people that enjoy the advancement in software and technology. Exploring Windows 8 is the key to understanding what you can do with it and the PC.

1 out of 5 eggsThe more I use it...

Pros: ... the more I hate it.

Pros: Can be wiped out for replacement (though not easily).

Cons: Usage is unfriendly and time consuming, looks are below average, charms and metro are the biggest joke.

Other Thoughts: Being a computer technician for a living I have to support and repair Windows computers, including Windows 8. When faced with repairing a Windows 8 machine that BSOD's after booting, not allowing time to configure it for Safe Mode (which was easy to access in previous versions), the machine is next to useless. Booting from a Windows 8 DVD is also next to useless as it tells you to boot from the hard drive to repair or restore.

From a support persons point of view I recommend staying away from Windows 8.

4 out of 5 eggsFinally back to useful

Pros: Fast, solid, capable, easy to use with apparently all the past features built in at 8.1 with update and classic menu. I love the Home group support, especially with multiple PCs. Make sure to turn admin tools on to get a lot of neat options including a PowerShell editor. On two monitor systems, the start panel can show on one with the desktop on the other.
With Windows Essentials the Windows 8 apps for media are real simple to use.
If you need domain support, bitlocker or virtualization get the Pro version, otherwise get the regular version.

Cons: The agony of getting there. Windows Update is picky and requires forever to load fixes. They should recall all the disks and give out new slipstreamed ones.

4 out of 5 eggsNot as bad once you get used to it

Pros: Once you update it to 8.1 and get used to the interface it has a few nice features like you can click on the window and type "control" to find the control panel or type "run" to run a specific command. It's not Vista, but it does have too much surface stuff that I don't need. Boots a lot faster and does most things faster.

Cons: Metro, tiles are ugly confusing and less intuitive than the previous interface. It's a step backwards because it takes me longer to do most anything.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8.1 is not as bad as everyone else here has said, but seems like a step backwards. I don't need all the extra's for tablets, phones, and PDA's since I'm running a desktop and do not have a touch screen. I do not stare at blocks updating themselves all day long.

2 out of 5 eggsMEH

Pros: It's the latest and greatest... no, I just mean it's the latest.

Cons: Lots.

when you install it's hard to find the program. the new start menu is dumb. they tried to make one software for all devices and clearly desktops with multiple monitor real-estate is going to function differently than a small mobile form factor. when I wanted to open an app on my second monitor it took up the entire window when I didn't want it to. The store feature is dumb. do you really want me to continue?

4 out of 5 eggsIt Depends

Pros: Personally, I have only minor gripes with Windows 8, and 8.1. There are some slight changes to the way things behave. Boot time on an SSD is incredible, around 3 seconds. I suspect this is a new hibernation feature to allow quick resumes, even after a full Shutdown.

Cons: Navigation is kind of difficult. The Start Screen was obviously designed for a tablet, not a desktop. Some keyboard shortcuts are altered, or removed entirely.

This OS was clearly designed as a bridge between a desktop and tablet OS. Things are not going to work the best on either platform. Hopefully Microsoft can smooth out the rough edges and create a better experience for both parties.

5 out of 5 eggsLove Win 8

Pros: I love Windows 8. Got some getting use to, but now I see why it is a great direction Microsoft is taking to unify the interface on all its devices. Love using my phone, tablet, home computer, work computer, seamlessly all on Win 8. If the future is the cloud, then Win 8 is the future.

Cons: A few common tasks seemed to take too many steps to do, but have upgraded to Win 8.1 and right click of start button provides all the shortcuts to iron out this issue.

Other Thoughts: There are a lot of Microsoft haters that seem to bad mouth any Microsoft product. Win 8 is a great OS.
