1 out of 5 eggsStick to 7 or buy 7

Pros: Runs Direct X 11 for newer video cards which is the only reason I left XP. Newegg delivered it fast as always.

Cons: Interface. The new Win 8 interface makes your whole computer like a smartphone interface! Get free app immediately so you don't have to deal with Metro that sets the interface back to 7ish interface. Then set everything like pictures to viewer and videos to iTunes but not set to XBOX!!! I don't own XBOX! I don't get why default is XBOX videos.
Worst thing about Metro mode is symbols that should be buttons ARE NOT!!!! You have to click pictures to link to other stuff and then you are stuck!!! AS in no back button or quit. I have had this since Febuary 2014 and only got it to run Battlefield 3 that I bought pre-order back in 2012 (I know, should have read system requirements. I had XP and GT8800 Vid Card which would not even install the game. Saved up for new card and then bought Win 8 on sale in 12/13 and was told it was horrible so didn't install until Febuary 2014. I don't have much of game budget, get what I can little at a time)
WELL Battlefield 3 had issues with Windows 8 and the EA boards I went to on Battlelog for at fix said go back to 7 (I NEVER HAD 7. I had XP which doesn't run Direct X 11 which is needed for BF3). Worst still I had issues with some of my Steam games like LFD2 and TF2 that I have played without issue for YEARS!!!! Finally got stuff to run with free 8.1 update. EXCEPT BF3 and BF4 (Yeah thought it might be better with 4. WRONG. Worst).
Don't waste your money. Get 7 if you have XP still.

Other Thoughts: I never had VISTA but, this is looking like worst. I heard 7 was just a reboot of XP. Microsoft needs to talk to people that use computers. I think their marketing team just uses tablets and phones and said "Hey instead of people always wishing their phone could do more like there desk/laptop lets just downgrade everything on the desk/laptop to be just a big of a pain to work on as a PHONE! BRILLIANT!" NOT!

4 out of 5 eggswindows 8

Cons: lack of compatibility with tones of hardware and software and in my opinion unless you have touch screen utterly useless.

Other Thoughts: i dislike windows 8, switched back 2 windows 7 oh well

5 out of 5 eggsBeyond Satisfied

Pros: Everyone always beats down on Windows 8, but I like this operating system so much. After the first half hour of dreading learning pretty much everything over again, its totally worth it. Would recommend to anyone looking for an upgrade.

Cons: Slight learning curve, but nothing too intense.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't do it

Pros: good for touch screen users

Cons: feels completely different than other windows versions
hard to learn
slower boot time

Other Thoughts: This product is terrible. I've hated it since day one. It's completely different. It's designed for the mobile crowd, probably good for your kids
It focuses on touch screen blocks and tabs for navigating and apps (which you dont need any of if you're using a desktop.
there wasn't a start button in 8 but they corrected it in 8.1, but after I installed 8.1 i kept getting usb not recognized messages, and my peripherals not working. This is a known fail, it has a hotfix on the site but it didn't work for me.
I needed to downgrade back to win 7 which then strips all drivers from your mother board and graphics card (network connection, sound, graphics etc).

Overall buggy beyond belief, Vista all over again, wait till they fix it and distance themselves from the name 8 and re-labal it win 9 like they did with Vista/7

4 out of 5 eggsWindows 8

Pros: Love it, much faster than Windows 7.

Cons: The start page is stupid, it's all about getting people to use tablets, and personally I miss the start button.

Other Thoughts: Can't go wrong with this upgrade. Newegg did an excellent job of making me happy when the delivery was slow.

2 out of 5 eggsPirated copy?

Pros: Looked like full secure retail box. Installed properly.

Cons: Couldn't activate w/ product key that was in the box. Called MS and they said that key had already been used 32 times.

2 out of 5 eggsWin 8 Pro Upgrade

Pros: There aren't a lot of pros to Win 8 over Win 7.

Cons: The cons are well documented.

Other Thoughts: Wanted to update my backup machine to Win 8 from Win 7 as a test bed. Wanted to expand my experience with Win 8. Will install Classic Shell to improve user interface.

5 out of 5 eggsGood software

Pros: Windows 8 is not the terrible software that many claim. It boots up fast, shuts down quickly, and is very stable. I have not had any problems with it at all.

Cons: The start up screen with the tile interface.

Other Thoughts: However there are third party applications where you can get the same desktop as windows 7. That makes it simple to work with if you don't like the tiles and moving the mouse around the edges to get to the menus. And, some of them are free!

1 out of 5 eggsNeeds Substantial Improvement

Pros: Enables system use of full 32MB of memory; WIndows 7 Home Premium recognizes maximum of 16GB.

Cons: Windows 8 Pro couldn't load some software disks, such as my Gigabyte motherboard DVD. I upgraded to 8.1 and now my Kindle For PC won't work, and 8.1 can't load my new H&R Block tax preparation software disk. There may be other software disks it can't load. My Pictures Library worked well in 7 but has problems in 8.1 - Microsoft seems to prefer that we click the designated apps for photos, which I find unsatisfactory. There also appear to be some non-user-friendly changes to Windows Media Player in 8.1.

Other Thoughts: Fortunately, I saved my Windows 7 Home Premium HDD and cloned it to a new HDD where I upgraded to 8 and then to 8.1. After using 8.1 for about a week, I returned to Windows 7 so I can do my taxes, use my Kindle For PC, and do photo editing. Compared to 7, 8.1 is not friendly for user creativity; instead, it implicitly promotes consumerism.

5 out of 5 eggsbuy just to get 8.1

Pros: the free upgrade to 8.1!! Well worth it to get to 8.1 which is a great operating system, with the ability to customize it. What my family loves about windows 8, the ability to keep the desktop clean but quickly access your apps. everything is stored in metro and kept off the screen.

Cons: again, waiting on some drivers and such, which most work now. Paying for these every other year! should be a buy 2 get 3rd free or something!!.. I also have a MAC, that update was $20!!

Other Thoughts: If you have a windows machine, windows 8 is a worthy update. YES it takes a little getting used to, but all the tools are still there. 8.1 put the windows button back, if you don't have it on your keyboard, also, right click it!! commonly used quick access items are right there!
