5 out of 5 eggsEasy install on custom build

Pros: Easy, quick install. Pop in the disc, and boom, it's done.

Cons: None. Getting used to switching from W7 to W8.1.

5 out of 5 eggsBest OS since Win2k

Pros: Super fast boot. The UI is more efficient imho. In essence, you now have multiple desktops. A Metro desktop & a "normal" desktop. Each app has it's own "desktop" and you can have multiple apps on the screen at once. MS got the touchscreen UI perfect. Everything works like I'd expect it to and it's consistent along the entire OS. Using a Mouse isn't that difficult, in fact I find it faster then the "normal" desktop start menu. The Metro desktop is much easier to navigate around. It's easier to find and use something in Win 8.1 then it is in Windows 7. Using an older Vista/7 machine feels slower, even when doing something as simple ask trying to run a program.
All my standard programs still work as expected. The icons on the Metro desktop are easier to read vs the normal desktop.
I'm using the same hardware I bought in 2008 for Windows XP (except GPU) and everything is faster to respond and works great. I wasn't sure how well it would work on 6 year old hardware (at the time I got 8.1) but am pleasantly surprised.

Cons: My scanner wasn't win 8.1 compatible. Sometimes when I try to wake my computer from sleep it crashes because the GPU wouldn't respond fast enough & Windows would assume it froze (only happens with sleep but it boots so fast I use hibernate now instead). Since an update a bit ago, both Metro apps and desktop programs are in the start bar: I find that annoying because apps don't close out unless you manually close them & can cutter the start bar. You're forced to use the normal desktop for non-metro apps, which is annoying.

Other Thoughts: I heard nothing but negative talk about Win 8.1 when I bought it. It was cheaper for a retail copy vs Win 7. I'm NOT dissapointed. Going from Win XP UI to 8.1 was easy. That's why I waited a year to review, so I can see what I like/dislike about it and not just have the "it's now, it's horrible" mentality.
I really wish there was an option for apps to now show in the start bar, but besides that I really like this copy of Windows. I'm happy I skipped 7 and got this when I needed to replace my copy of XP. I'm just sorry I didn't upgrade sooner.

4 out of 5 eggsAn Excellent OS

Pros: It pays to know what you are doing and if you don't watch our.

Cons: Your hardware must be compadible with the os or you're out of luck. It pays to have the latest drivers for all of it.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than original 8

Pros: Right click on the Start Button (now a white flag) and you get most of the admin stuff you miss. OS makes more efficient use of SSDs, UFIE BIOS, and USB 3.0 devices.

Cons: Files are still a pain to find (yes that was part of the start menu on 7), Metro tiles are still running in the background (part of services)

Other Thoughts: I liked 98-XP-7, and now starting to like 8.1. If you dont use the start menu to get to your programs, then this will work great for you. Otherwise, you will have to download third party software to get that feature back in a different form.

1 out of 5 eggsArguably the worst IT product I have purchased in 35 years

Pros: It boots up fast

Cons: Quite simply the most abhorrent user interface I have ever seen. You would have to be insane to load this OS and go into a business presentation....file types that have been recognized for decades now require add-on purchases to display....simple drag and drop operations to and from emails constantly have licensing issues on non-supported file types. It has been a nightmare.

Virtually everything takes longer due to design, more clicks, more navigation to do everything....Even the most simple tasks become challengingg For MSFT to have released this as their primary OS was a disgrace.

2 out of 5 eggswindows 8.1

Pros: fast for tablet use

Cons: the metro UI for start menu, no I do not plan to use a tablet style pc for everything. I'll wait for windows 9, just being fast wont replace my current os.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is the "real" deal....

Pros: Having been burned purchasing o/s licenses way more times than I care to remember so I'm gun shy about o/s licenses. I carefully researched/shopped around and purchased this retail (non oem) copy of Windows 8.1 Pro from Newegg. Delivery was made in less than 24 hours (provided your order is placed before 10am the day prior) which once again is a testament to Newegg's well stocked Secaucus warehouse on the east coast. I've used retail copies of Microsoft o/s licenses previously and depending on the situation one must carefully select either oem or retail copies. Oem is cheaper however is tied to the pc once installed and activated. Me, I needed to quickly get a homebuilt Z97 motherboard up and running but only on a temporary basis. Goal was to eventually use the same license on a X99 chipset based pc later this fall. Purchasing from Newegg eliminates the fear of getting stuck with counterfeit copies of o/s especially wary of the one popular auction site in particular. Products when delivered are almost always counterfeited and come time to activate the o/s you will find the license string is bogus. In all the 25+ years I have been a Newegg customer I have never ever had to return a product and this includes disk drives, monitors, motherboards, and desktop memory.

Cons: Microsoft TechNet and Actionpack subscriptions no longer available (even if you are in the trade!) making it more and more difficult keeping skillsets current. Pricing of o/s licensing is "through the roof" making Ubuntu and Redhat more and more appealing, Managed to get pricing down to $180 using a combination of both ebates and Visa checkout

5 out of 5 eggsSkeptical at first...

Pros: Fast install.. literally the fastest windows install I have done. Tried it on a HDD and a SSD and the SSD of course performed faster but even doing a traditional install from a DVD to an HDD blew my mind. From blank drive to desktop in like ten mins or less, setting up a windows live account and getting texted the security code eats up a lot of time.

Boots extremely fast. If you disable the fast startup it's on par with Win7 but on fast startup is nice to jump from tapping the power button to login under ten seconds.

Forced myself to try it for two weeks with Win7 as a dual boot in case I had issues I could reboot to get back to normal life but now I find myself using 8.1 more.

Cons: Still has some compatibility issues. Took a little time to smooth out driver problems and days of setting stuff to the way I wanted it but in the end it's pretty good but still room for improvement. My biggest complaint was overall navigation when on the desktop.. Years of familiarity with XP Vista and 7 were out the window. This is truly the biggest issue but there is solutions.. See my further comments below.

I was annoyed that Windows Media Center had to be purchased separately through the store for $9.99 but I can live with that. If I buy the top version of an OS I kinda expect things like the premiums to be included...

2 out of 5 eggsWaiting for Win9

Pros: Can't argue with the benchmarks. Higher than WIn7 kernel.

Cons: Interface is a complete disaster. Cookie-cutter interface doesn't bode well for a desktop OS. If you have to install add-ons for the basic UI of an OS, then meh.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Very fast installation! This has got to be the fastest installing windows yet. Feels quite a bit faster than 7 in pretty much everything. It does take a bit of tweaking after setup to get the desktop to function and work to my preferences. Almost all of my old apps still work and joining it to my network domain was super easy.

Cons: Behind my network firewall none of the metro apps will connect to the internet. The metro apps don't use the same TCP/IP authentication methods as the desktop apps "i don't think they use any for that matter". This is not really a big deal as I never use the metro interface and some times even forget that it is even there.

Other Thoughts: I have used windows 8 for a while on my laptop so I knew ahead of time what I was getting myself into.
