5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1 64 Bit

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Decided to try this since win 7 has so many updates.
A pain to navigate at first but after finding how to get to a desktop screen no problem. Like any new system it takes a little bit of patience to get used to it. I now love it over win7 64bit. never crashes or locks up with my hybrid disk OS boots in 8 seconds blurs through window screen right to desktop.

Cons: Tried first installing with older SATA 2 DRIVE and nothing but problems. Make a system boot on a flash drive just in case. Had circle of death many times on boot up. used the thumb drive constantly to get booted up. Bought a 64G M.2 hybrid drive and installed the OS. Now I have zero problems. Boots fast and stabile . No egg deduction for this.

Other Thoughts: Thank you Newegg for such fast service. Everything I have bought here has worked flawlessly . I am A+ certified. have been building computers for over 20 years. But you learn something new every day. And thanks to all the reviewers here. You helped me a lot in making my decisions.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly touch screen friendly optimized

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Fast
New
Upgraded
(Read Other Thoughts)

Cons: It seems to only be touch screen friendly
(Read Other Thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I own windows 8.1 on my laptop and my tablet(Nokia lumia 2520). I compaired them, and I personally think, if Microsoft only released windows 8.1 for a touch screen, it would make history, but when it was released, They released it as soon as touch screens started getting bigger, I beleive microsoft should have released a whole different 'Desktop friendly' version, and a tablet/all in one/ touch screen monitor version, and you could select what you want at the first boot of windows 8, and there was enough technology at the time to do it. But i personally like windows 8.1.

2 out of 5 eggsawful user experience

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: it runs all of my trusty old software

beneath the new horrid and frustrating user interface, it's still good old trusty windows.

Cons: the cons begin right from the start - the long-winded security key code is written on the sticker in such a faint and tiny font (can't tell a B from an 8, the 2 looks like the 7 looks like the Z, etc, etc). that even with cheaters on (that i don't usually need) it took me .5 hr of nonstop trial and error to finally enter the code correctly.

no start menu!?! why? the half tablet, half "normal" pc interface transition is jarring.

the provided desktop themes are all too flashy swishy, wishy, way out - and, distracting! yes, it's so cool to be so cool, but can't you tone it down just a tad for one or two themes? we're not all flashy hyped up media companies out here. we use this for business apps. jeesh!

Other Thoughts: unless there's something important for you to have that's unique to win8, i'd stick w/ win7 until this messy ui gets cleaned up (hopefully in win9).

5 out of 5 eggsBest OS hands down

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Lets get one thing straight, THE START BUTTON IS THERE, RIGHT CLICK ON THE WINDOWS LOGO TO BRING UP OPTIONS. People are complaining about how it just takes them back to the metro screen, well they should of read the simple instructions after the update before writing bad reviews. I didn't really care for the start button anyway. Faster than my mac and (use to be) windows 7 pc before I but windows 8 on it. I find it way more productive/easier than any other windows os from gaming, writing papers, multitasking*, overall faster. I never experienced any crashes or bugs on 8/8.1 on both of my computers. To anyone looking to choose an os get windows 8.1, don't listen to these people that complain and want to purposely give this operating system a bad rep. If you like the desktop screen you can bootup straight to it and never touch the metro screen, but give the metro screen a try and fully customize it to your liking, you'll learn to love it. It functions perfectly even if you don't have a touchscreen computer. If windows 8.1 crashes or you experience bugs, I'm 99% sure its due to your computer/drivers/ or software from 3rd parties that you installed.

Cons: I prefer the internet explorer version on the desktop than from the metro ui (user interface). It doesn't give me an option to use that one from the metro ui. If you use google chrome this isn't an issue, its the same from the desktop and metro ui. Not really a con but a nit pick.

Other Thoughts: I prefer producing music with windows 8.1 than os x mavericks, ableton live 9 works excellent, easily connect my usb keyboards and more. I'm thinking of uploading a video review of windows 8.1.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Windows 8.1 is nice and pretty, feels and looks fresh. The interface is cool, if you have an open mind are are willing to learn new things.

Cons: I should have purchased windows 7. Even though windows claims 8.1 is stable and corrects past release issues. It is still very buggy. I have crashed more times in the last week than Ive crashed in two years with my windows 7 machine. Which I've investigated all crashes to trace back to the operating system. It took lots of modifications to get it to sleep correctly.. which occasionally it still does not go into sleep mode the right way. Certain apps from the windows app store will just outright crash the entire computer. Netflix has crashed on me 4 times.. only through the app though, not if I use it in a browser. Chrome also continues to crash either after I finish playing a game or when I bring it back from sleep.

Other Thoughts: I would have taken off more eggs, but I do see the future potential of this operating system. I have confidence in microsoft to eventually come out with a worthy update to finally replace their windows 7.

There are a lot of bugs in this software.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: none

Cons: It's not 7 or even XP.

Other Thoughts: This whole lets turn your desktop into a android is lame. The skype app is so restrictive, had a hotmail.ca for it. Now it forces me because of 8.1 to outlook. Which only means I have to re add all my friends and family. Garbage. It's not even compatible with my steelseries mouse. I would give it zero if I could.
