2 out of 5 eggsBuyers beware!

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: It's nice and fast with the Samsung 840 EVO SSD.

Cons: Extremely different from Windows 7. A lot of settings have been moved around or renamed which make the transition process kind of frustrating.

OEM is for system builders. If you contact Microsoft for support, they'll tell you that you're out of luck.

Other Thoughts: If you're a student, it's almost always cheaper to buy the student editions directly from Microsoft. This will also save you the trouble of dealing with Microsoft support should the need ever arise.

It's my understanding that 8.1 was designed for touch screen interaction. This became very apparent after using it for awhile.

Some programs like Adobe are formatted to only be full or half screen. I have two widescreen monitors and still find this to be very annoying. (CON)

After interacting with 8.1, I decided I didn't like the feel of how everything was laid out. I did some research and came across a program called "Classic Shell" that (for basic interaction) brings back the organization and feel of previous versions.

1 out of 5 eggsWindows *

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Quick startup of computer and installed fairly easy.

Cons: No longer windows, its a droid phone or tablet software. It doesnt work any existing or legacy software so its a pretty desktop.

Other Thoughts: What a bunch of as#wipes at microsoft trying to change everything to be something else and throwing away the foundation the company stands on. Its getting to the point that every change in the operating software is a completely new product that forces everyone to relearn how to be productive. I don't want to spend my work hours relearning new software to do the same tasks I used to do.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: After installation you go straight to the desktop.
With a little work (and a 3rd party start menu), you can make Windows 8.1 look just like 7.
It's marginally faster then 7, if you need to upgrade from either XP and Vista, it's a perfectly good option.

Cons: During the installation, it makes it very difficult to setup a user which is not connected to a Microsoft Live account.
Some things (such as changing account password) are in the full screen app style.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Super Fast, Basically windows 7 with a much needed OS refresh. Start menu is actually great and easily customized to include everything you use to use on xp/7. Search function is also great as it just starts when you start typing.

Cons: You have to buy it?

Other Thoughts: I just got windows 8 as 8.1 for the first time and I honestly see no reason why you would want 7 over this, (unless you really need that xp mode) Its fast and optimized out of the box for SSDs. I was hesitant to get 8 but im so glade i did, the system boots to the desktop like normal and the new start menu is great, I have the start menu setup with the exact same options as I had on XP/7.

The metro stuff may not be really needed for a desktop but can be ignored easily but for anyone who keeps up with xbox live the xbox one smartglass app on windows 8 is great!.

Its run all my older programs with ease as well, also startup of windows 8 is super fast. 5-8 secs.

Overall I think its a amazing OS and shouldn't be overlooked.

4 out of 5 eggsIts Windows 8.1

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Its fast

Cons: Different than windows 7
Classic Start menu not back

Other Thoughts: I'm used to Windows 7, but mainstream support is ending soon, and I needed to build a PC for my mother-in-law. I decided to go with windows 8.1.

Install was easy, not much different than windows 7
Tiles are different (but I expected that)
Desktop is back, but the start menu brings you back to the tile interface. Not a big fan, but like any change, will take getting used to.

Would like to see a "classic" start menu mode. . but oh well.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's great

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Windows operating system.
Metro UI is nice once you understand how to use it.

Cons: Takes a bit to over the "new ui" shock.

Other Thoughts: Once you get over yourself and realize the home screen is a full screen start menu, it's just like using windows 7, but you get new feature development since windows 7 is at end of active development.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1 64 Bit

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Decided to try this since win 7 has so many updates.
A pain to navigate at first but after finding how to get to a desktop screen no problem. Like any new system it takes a little bit of patience to get used to it. I now love it over win7 64bit. never crashes or locks up with my hybrid disk OS boots in 8 seconds blurs through window screen right to desktop.

Cons: Tried first installing with older SATA 2 DRIVE and nothing but problems. Make a system boot on a flash drive just in case. Had circle of death many times on boot up. used the thumb drive constantly to get booted up. Bought a 64G M.2 hybrid drive and installed the OS. Now I have zero problems. Boots fast and stabile . No egg deduction for this.

Other Thoughts: Thank you Newegg for such fast service. Everything I have bought here has worked flawlessly . I am A+ certified. have been building computers for over 20 years. But you learn something new every day. And thanks to all the reviewers here. You helped me a lot in making my decisions.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly touch screen friendly optimized

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit

Pros: Fast
New
Upgraded
(Read Other Thoughts)

Cons: It seems to only be touch screen friendly
(Read Other Thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I own windows 8.1 on my laptop and my tablet(Nokia lumia 2520). I compaired them, and I personally think, if Microsoft only released windows 8.1 for a touch screen, it would make history, but when it was released, They released it as soon as touch screens started getting bigger, I beleive microsoft should have released a whole different 'Desktop friendly' version, and a tablet/all in one/ touch screen monitor version, and you could select what you want at the first boot of windows 8, and there was enough technology at the time to do it. But i personally like windows 8.1.
