5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly fast and easy to use

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Windows 8.1 is an improvement over the initial offering of Windows 8. The improvement can be seen in the ability to use Windows 7 knowledge for finding your way around for one thing. The installation was the best that has ever come out of Redmond. It's ease of use generally throughout and speed if you are using a newer CPU, enough RAM (8GB) and boot it from an SSD - it's like a JimmyJohns delivery - freakie fast!

Cons: Really haven't experienced any. I am also testing Windows 10 though and it appears to have vast improvement over 8.1.

Other Thoughts: If you have the horsepower, upgrade to 8.1.

4 out of 5 eggsMuch Better than 8

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Much better than 8. Boots into familiar desktop.
Quick Boot is awesome with SSD's (I'm ready in 20 secs.).
Free upgrade to Win 10.

Cons: Don't like the "APP" stuff too much.
Sometimes tricky to navigate.

Other Thoughts: It's not too shabby.

4 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1, whoopee

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Physical disk

Cons: The key code on the package is so tiny I needed a jeweler's loupe to decipher it.

Other Thoughts: Just the disk, no manual.

5 out of 5 eggsFree Win10 Upgrade!!!

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: I've been using Windows 8/8/1 since it released (and in beta to lesser degree). Built a new system, and saw that there is a free upgrade to Win10. So I bought it.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsOEM means --

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: A lot of things do work, but Metro...ugh.

Cons: To me there at least two very worst aspects to this offer:
1. It's OEM! That means that you can not put it on your next build. Unless you call MS and beg, and maybe you can, if you don't change too much (hdd, ok, but not new motherboard: am I wrong?)...sheesh Pro should mean PRO, buy it, use it, put it on your next build, you gave us money, enjoy.
2. METRO! Slows down slower computers a lot, medium builds somewhat, measurably on fast computers.
3. haha, you can no longer see how big files and directories are that are selected in File Explorer. Removing this feature, which I use a lot, was tragically stupid. Did they lose the code? Perhaps someone had pepper on their salad? I do NOT get it! I have not been able to restore it after a year....

Other Thoughts: A lot has been said about the problems in Windows 8 choice of interface. Many problems are so epic that MS is skipping a generation # to try to distance itself with the NBT! (next big thing) And it's giving that one, 10, away. Note, it will have fatal flaws that will never be disclosed; it already has working back doors for the Now Secure A gen zy. It has screen doors off the porch for Chinlee hackers to gain direct access.

OEM is bound to gain a new meaning: perhaps the software will bond with the hardware and you will not be able to upgrade unless you're Greek?

5 out of 5 eggsGood Purchase

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Slick interface, reliable, comes with Hyper-V which is great for virtual machines.

Cons: The new start screen may take some getting used to if you're coming from Windows 7 or Vista. But it's not that much of a leap.

5 out of 5 eggsFeatures

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: I tend to upgrade OS whenever Microsoft comes out with a new version. This meant that I have used some OS that didn't fare well. Windows 8 forced a significant GUI change on Users which wasn't appreciated for those of us still using PCs.

Windows 8.1 fixed most of the issues with the GUI. There are a number of minor improvments to the OS in several areas that make Windows 8.1 a better choice in my mind than Windows 7. The OS boots faster, Secure Boot is available, task manager gives more detail, etc.

I bought the Pro version primarily for BitLocker.

Cons: The change in the Windows GUI can be annoying to some people. I don't expect Microsoft will have that completely resolved until Windows 10 is released in 2015?

Other Thoughts: Even with the potential for some annoying changes to the Windows GUI I feel that Windows 8.1 is a superior OS to Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsGood bye Windows 7, Hello Windows 8.1

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Looking for a modern operating system, then look no further. Windows 8.1 incorporates the best from Windows 7 and Windows 8.0.

Benefits:

1. Faster Boot times (at desktop with all software loaded in 10 secs compared to 35-40 secs with Windows 7 running the same hardware.

2. Faster Operating system in general compared to Windows 7 (Windows 8.1 way more responsive than Windows 7)

3. More secure than Windows 7. (Microsoft did a great job removing unnecessary coding that had not been removed in Windows 7, this excess coding can lead to security breaches, viruses and malware infections)

4. Bitlocker support

5. Excellent Gaming Support.

6. Easy to use.

And yes you can create local or Microsoft account when installing the software.

Cons: None thus far. it's very dependable, stable and secure operating system compared to previous Microsoft operating systems.

Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor and don't listen to so called experts and en-titlist who believe things should be handed to them.

Nathan G., Donald L. and Jon S. have no clue about what they are talking about when it comes to windows 8.1. Most likely their opinion comes from inexperience and or laziness to learn new features in a operating system, therefore these internet trolls bash something they don't understand!

And just so everyone knows, Tablets features have been in every Microsoft operating system dating back to Windows XP. Windows 7 is no exception.

4 out of 5 eggsFaster than 7

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Fast, extremely stable, excellent hardware support, easy to use. I like the menu that pops up when you right click the start menu. Software raid from Windows 7 works just fine in Win8.

Cons: The metro interface should not be the default startup screen on a desktop PC - you should be given the option to choose during installation. You need to download aftermarket (free) software to gain a familiarly functional start menu. The background images that come with the OS are inexplicably terrible quality. They did away with the option of the Windows 7 Aero interface in favor of a more bland one.

Other Thoughts: Despite Microsoft being obtuse and heavy-handed with their implementation of some of the more annoying Windows 8 features for desktop, this is a pretty solid OS. A few minutes spent customizing it to work more seamlessly with a desktop PC is well worth the effort.
