5 out of 5 eggsGood Purchase

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Slick interface, reliable, comes with Hyper-V which is great for virtual machines.

Cons: The new start screen may take some getting used to if you're coming from Windows 7 or Vista. But it's not that much of a leap.

5 out of 5 eggsFeatures

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: I tend to upgrade OS whenever Microsoft comes out with a new version. This meant that I have used some OS that didn't fare well. Windows 8 forced a significant GUI change on Users which wasn't appreciated for those of us still using PCs.

Windows 8.1 fixed most of the issues with the GUI. There are a number of minor improvments to the OS in several areas that make Windows 8.1 a better choice in my mind than Windows 7. The OS boots faster, Secure Boot is available, task manager gives more detail, etc.

I bought the Pro version primarily for BitLocker.

Cons: The change in the Windows GUI can be annoying to some people. I don't expect Microsoft will have that completely resolved until Windows 10 is released in 2015?

Other Thoughts: Even with the potential for some annoying changes to the Windows GUI I feel that Windows 8.1 is a superior OS to Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsGood bye Windows 7, Hello Windows 8.1

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Looking for a modern operating system, then look no further. Windows 8.1 incorporates the best from Windows 7 and Windows 8.0.

Benefits:

1. Faster Boot times (at desktop with all software loaded in 10 secs compared to 35-40 secs with Windows 7 running the same hardware.

2. Faster Operating system in general compared to Windows 7 (Windows 8.1 way more responsive than Windows 7)

3. More secure than Windows 7. (Microsoft did a great job removing unnecessary coding that had not been removed in Windows 7, this excess coding can lead to security breaches, viruses and malware infections)

4. Bitlocker support

5. Excellent Gaming Support.

6. Easy to use.

And yes you can create local or Microsoft account when installing the software.

Cons: None thus far. it's very dependable, stable and secure operating system compared to previous Microsoft operating systems.

Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor and don't listen to so called experts and en-titlist who believe things should be handed to them.

Nathan G., Donald L. and Jon S. have no clue about what they are talking about when it comes to windows 8.1. Most likely their opinion comes from inexperience and or laziness to learn new features in a operating system, therefore these internet trolls bash something they don't understand!

And just so everyone knows, Tablets features have been in every Microsoft operating system dating back to Windows XP. Windows 7 is no exception.

4 out of 5 eggsFaster than 7

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Fast, extremely stable, excellent hardware support, easy to use. I like the menu that pops up when you right click the start menu. Software raid from Windows 7 works just fine in Win8.

Cons: The metro interface should not be the default startup screen on a desktop PC - you should be given the option to choose during installation. You need to download aftermarket (free) software to gain a familiarly functional start menu. The background images that come with the OS are inexplicably terrible quality. They did away with the option of the Windows 7 Aero interface in favor of a more bland one.

Other Thoughts: Despite Microsoft being obtuse and heavy-handed with their implementation of some of the more annoying Windows 8 features for desktop, this is a pretty solid OS. A few minutes spent customizing it to work more seamlessly with a desktop PC is well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 eggsIgnore the low eggers. It's just negative hype.

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: It is slightly faster than 7
It handles dpi scaling slightly better than 7.
It is build to deal with ssd's, completely, UNLIKE 7.
(I've already written a review of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on here long ago specifying the rest. Find it. It's under the same nick name " Libertarian "

Cons: People that keep Low -egging this item when it's obvious they're just repeating the same non-sensible negative hype because " waaaa metro screen. waaa apps"

Wait. You must must right click and left click on " uninstall" to remove the app that I can't stand? That's too much effort, waaaaaaaa. I hate win8. waaaa" -_-

*facepalm*

These are probably the same people who would complain about getting oil changed in a REGULAR gasoline combustion automobile ( something that has BEEN a normal regularly scheduled maintenance tasks for the everyday car, pickup, and bigrig diesel truck for the past 100 years) after buying the car brand new thinking that just because it's new that THAT task shouldn't be necessary.

These people don't seem to understand the concept of critical thinking and common sense.

It's Microsoft Windows. There WILL be at least ONE or a few things that the individual pc user MUST adjust or tweak to his or her preference. Microsoft can't read anyone's mind on this planet at a moments notice to program a CERTAIN tweak to THAT individual's future liking into a mass production software of an Operating System. Get real.

Other Thoughts: If you're too lazy to UNINSTALL something that is EASY to uninstall and too ignorant or lazy to internet search for " classic shell", download it and install it, then you have NO RIGHT low egging a product that you OBVIOUSLY knew ahead of time had the " metro screen" that you all can't stand. I"m willing to bet that over half the reviews on windows 8 and 8.1 on here AREN'T by any owners who let alone owners who PAID for it. If you didn't even pay for it, you haven't the right to complain.

I had SENSE enough to test the tech preview with classic shell, start8, and other coherent software to ensure for myself that I WILL NEVER have to deal with the modernui aka metro screen when I finally chose to buy Windows 8's full official version.

Why is this even a debate or problem again? Classic shell has BEEN available since at least January 2013 when I was able to buy Win 8 pro 64 bit via direct download from Microsoft's official website for 39 dollars and 99 cents. This is OLD info now. Children love to harp on silly things.

I say children because it MUST be children that just get on newegg to get noticed trying to keep adding lighter fluid to a pointless argument that was defeated before it even began.

Yes Windows M.E. was horrible and should have never been released. Yes Vista was trash also, but Windows 8 isn't either.

Fact= EVERY version of Windows must be tweaked to some extent, depending on THE INDIVIDUAL user's preferences. It's like buying or renting a new home. Just because the previous owner hated navy blue walls and all white colored bathroom design DOESN'T mean the home needs nuking. It's called visit a paint store and get to work. Nothing in life is free and PERFECTLY ready for your enjoyment.

A mediocre life is always ready for you, but a GREAT life takes work.

" Anything worth doing won't always be easy". Get over it. Not the cars you buy, not the food preparations you prefer, and certainly not doing your yearly taxes will be headache-free.

Grow up people. Stop hating on a good product just because you think you're cool.

The POINT of uploading a review of a product is to give honest, sincere, but most of all an INFORMATIVE review of the product and what to expect.
It's beyond OBVIOUS more than half the reviews about Windows 8 and 8.1 on here are just ignorant children who have nothing better to do than to bash a good product that they are too lazy to just internet search for classic shell or the like. People who are that lazy or ignorant or both really shouldn't be allowed to upload reviews since their reviews are so obviously biased to such an UNeducated extent that it will give the wrong impression of the product.

Don't you particular reviewers realize this MAY hurt newegg's sales? Do you even care? Newegg is made up of human beings too. Try stopping, thinking, and realizing that instead of uploading useless and just ignorantly negative content, do your research, try things and THE

2 out of 5 eggsLet's face it, Windows 8 is a serious miss.

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Well, the one nice thing I can say about Windows 8 in my application is the way it handles multiple screens. I like the simple things like wetting different wallpapers and toolbars for each monitor. I feel more confident with Windows 8 (over 7) as I move into the UHD realm.
Another nice feature is your ability to sync your settings across multiple computers.
The auto window color adjustment to match the background is a cute feature.
Startup is faster than Windows 7.

Cons: Well, I could write a book here but I don't know that it will be useful for buyers. So, I will just write a few simple gripes. Metro. Hate it. Please get rid of it. Apps. Hate them. Refuse to use them. I uninstall them. I cannot stand when an app seizes my screen and takes over my 'desktop'. All of a sudden I am pulled into Metro. I understand the need to compete with Apple to get the IOS generation kids. I understand the need to unify mobile and desktop on a single platform. But wow, they missed with this one.

Other Thoughts: I hate it but I buy it. Ahh the world of the monopoly.

2 out of 5 eggsIf you loved Windows ME...

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: Supposedly better than 8.0 so I gave it 2 stars.

Cons: -Remarkably unstable for a modern operating system.
-Countless utterly useless, time consuming features.
-Plenty of compatibility issues.
-Numerous failed fixes.
-Even the simplest tasks are obnoxious and convoluted.
-Windows ME is an upgrade from this.

Other Thoughts: If you absolutely loved the stability and functionality of Windows ME and missed it horribly... this is the one for you.

Since it is non-returnable I actually burned it with fire in my backyard after the annoyance of copying, formatting and reinstalling Win 7.

5 out of 5 eggsI LIKE IT

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit

Pros: SUPER SMOOTH AND LOADING TIMES ARE SO MUCH FASTER THEN WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 7 INSTALLED. Since I'm using the desktop version when it boots into windows it starts on the desktop screen.

Cons: Just the whole start button thing. Not really that much of a pain since I'm using this windows on a custom built gaming desktop with NONE touch monitor.

Other Thoughts: After a few tweaks and arranging some icons on the desktop screen I sometimes forget it's not windows 7 until I go down and click on the windows icon and it takes me to that other screen that all the tablets start on.
