2 out of 5 eggsexpiring and restrictive

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: Some improvements over XP but you may not notice them

User Interface is cleaner than Win 8

Cons: Product Expires January 14, 2020

If you replace your motherboard or CPU then Microsoft won't let you reinstall this version.

Way over-priced old version

5 out of 5 eggsTried and True Windows 7

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: Windows 7 home premium x 64 bit
Supports up to 16 gigs of ram
Class fantatstic os
I am sure when 2020 comes around it will be morned and praised as highly if not more so as windows XP
I have been using windows 7 on my laptop for almost 4 years now
and I recently built a machine on windows 7 pro so I figured I would write a review as there aren't that many helpful reviews on this site presently imo.

Cons: Execution date of 2020 is set.

Boots a bit slower than windows 8/8.1 ( if you are on 8 do yourself a favor and upgrade to 8.1 before shelling out 100 for windows 7)

GAMERS: Direct X 12 will likely not be coming to Windows 7, no cause to be alarmed if you purchase win 7 right now you are elgible to upgrade to 10 which will have Dx12 free of charge, but it will not be free of hassle which is something to keep in mind.

There are easily 200 updates for windows 7 so set aside at least 3 hours for updates but that is to be expected for an os that has been around as long as 7.

Doesnt know to not defrag ssds. Be sure to set that to never happen if you install this on an ssd.

Other Thoughts: This is OEM software. It comes as 64 bit and 64 bit only, there is also a 32 bit only oem software on newegg. 32 bit will limit you to 4 gigs of ram or less. Many people have asked what is the difference between oem and retail. As far as the os itself is concerned, nothing. HOWEVER OEM is limited to ONE machine. You build your build install the os and boom. All you are able to change in your build is your cpu, ram, gpu and Hard drive or SSD. Upgrading a motherboard will requrie you to repurchase windows on oem software.

Hope this helps!

4 out of 5 eggsMicrosoft will never fix dual installations, will they?

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: Once it was working, no problems.

Cons: Lots of issues during install. BOOTMGR is missing, 0 windows installations found, etc.

Other Thoughts: Already had windows on another drive.

Tried installing on a fresh new SSD, planning to copy over files from the old drive afterwards. Worked fine at first. Downloaded some windows updates and restarted, then it loaded the old version of windows.

After 4 hours of digging through outdated posts on the internet I finally got some combination of boot disk + command prompt + bootrec that finally recovered the new installation. Once I was in, the first thing I did was delete the boot record for the old install so it didn't happen again.

I expected this to be easier with a legit copy of Windows for once. But nope, Windows still hasn't fixed this problem which I've ran into since XP.

3 out of 5 eggsBackside pain

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: good price

Cons: having issues with registry errors. update function is cranky. might be virus related. had to hook up with Microsoft to resolve the major issue of: after updates, the OS would not start. Have had to do numerous restores. Also, getting the OS to id my graphics card so I can 3D, has been fruitless.

Other Thoughts: when I resolve the update issues, I'll retool my review.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy installation & runs great

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: I installed this on to a machine I built in 2006 AM 64 processor. 4 gigs or RAM in it. It installed plug and play, recognized both RAID arrays (stripe & mirror) and installed all drivers. I had to update the Creative Audigy driver. Everything else worked without any manual assistance. Runs good so far with MS Office Pro 2013 installed.

I installed my copy of MS Visio 2006 which is 32 bit and it installed and runs fine.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsHard to get away from M$

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: Most stable version of Windoze available; I can leave running (standby when not using) for months without problems.

Cons: Cost is ridiculous, especially considering that Linux, BSD, and Haiku are free & OS X costs 20 bucks. All these other OS'es are superior to Windoze. I need this to run CAD software; eveything else I use is available free.
