Throw away your PC
- Pros: Excellent virtualization package for Intel-based Macs. Runs every x86-based operating system I have tried (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Linux, FreeBSD). Stable; seamless networking; does not disrupt Mac applications running at the same time. Extended tools for Windows are available which lets the clipboard be shared with Mac applications and automatically release mouse-capture. The existance of Parallels has allowed me to get rid of my Windows PC at work and do all my work on a Macbook Pro (there are Windows applications I just can't get away from, and I can now do operating system compatibility testing on one machine without rebooting). Good utilities for adjusting and autocompressingthe virtual partitions (which take the form of big, easily back-up files).
- Cons: Does not support DirectX. This is not surprising, as DirectX interfaces directly with the hardware, and it may not be technically possible at all. Like all virtualization packages, requires that you have plenty of memory available (if you're going to do reasonable work and still have your Mac apps run well at the same time, you WILL want 2gb of memory on your Mac). Also, you have to have a licensed copy of whatever guest operating system you run; just because you buy Parallels, that doesn't mean you can legally install your friend's copy of Windows, so you may need to include the price of a Windows license in your budget if you don't already have a spare Windows license. Obviously, this is not a problem if you intend to run Linux or somesuch in your virtual machine.
- Other Thoughts: IMPORTANT. This software does NOT run on PowerPC Macs. Let me repeat that. It does NOT run on PowerPC Macs. It is not intended to. It says so right on the package. It will NOT run on your G3, G4, G5. Nonetheless, sooner or later there will be someone who buys it for their G3 iMac and posts a negative review because it doesn't support PowerPC.
Good stuff
- Pros: Caerdwyn's review was excellent. A couple other excellent features are shared folders (basically, ability to access Mac HDD partition from Windows) and the ability to use a Boot Camp partition from Parallels.
- Cons: Biggest thing for me is no DirectX support, but that's to be expected.
- Other Thoughts: Very important to go to Help->Check For Updates as soon as you install it. Box came with build 1700something, most recent is like 3188. You need the new version for Boot Camp support and other stuff.

Vmware Fusion is a better product
- Pros: Works relatively as advertised
- Cons: found enough incompatibilities and issues with multicast networking with some OS's to stop using product
- Other Thoughts: I stopped using this product and now own VMware Fusion
Works as advertised
- Pros: Does what it says it does. I run WinXP and Ubuntu on my MacBook with no problems.
- Cons: This is nitpicking, but I wish it could boot WinXP faster when I just need one thing from the OS. (IE - Windows Media Player to view an email forwarded video.) Not really a con (no fault of the program), just a wish...
- Other Thoughts: Worth the money, I understand the VMWare product that is similar works well too...
Flirt with the Dark Side
- Pros: Allows me to run windows without rebooting. Uses boot camp partition. Works well on first Gen MBP 2GHz with 2 gig of memory.
- Cons: Can be confusing when using usb thumb drives - sometimes shows up in windows and sometimes on mac side. Probably my error.
