1 out of 5 eggsBitdefender NIGHTMARE

Pros: Sorry, cannot remember any Pros.

Cons: From the moment I loaded BitDefender Total Security 2013, I began experiencing NIGHTMARES. Day after day my computer kept developing problems, freezing, crashing, weird messages , etc. Then one morning BitDefender locked me out stating that I didn't have a valid license key. We argued day after day. In desperation, I finally eliminated Bitdefender from my computer. I found on the device screen that the description had changed to "a child's device". Of course that lead to multiple equipment conflicts. BitDefender severely damaged my computer. So far, BitDefender has refused to give me a refund or restitution. BEWARE! AVOID BITDEFENDER!

Other Thoughts: Please protect your computer by NOT purchasing this product!

5 out of 5 eggsMonopolizing Security

Pros: + Fantastic virus-busting performance
+ Ability to be proactive without being entirely paranoid (though it can be if you want it to)
+ Online storage
+ Free basic ID protection
+ Practical and hassle-free firewall
+ No alerts via game mode or autopilot. Keeps you safe without being annoying about it.
+ Lots of free optional security features like facebook and online payments.

Cons: - A bit resource heavy, low-mid range machines may have trouble with it.
- The interface needs a little tweaking. The default view makes you think there's fewer configurable options than there are.
- Firewall is not user-friendly. To the savvy user, it's fine, but to the layman might be hard to decipher.
- High price outside of deals and discounts.

Other Thoughts: I love BitDefender and have been using it since I first discovered it a few years ago. Each iteration is a respectable step-up from the version previous. The jump from 2012 to 2013 wasn't a very big difference, however. Where it really excels is being effective without being in-your-face about it. I've used anti-viruses in the past that will notify you about every little thing, BitDefender will just sit quietly in the corner of your desktop and let you know via a quaint little widget that something happened. At a glance you can look at resource use, security alerts, and if anything needs your attention.

Users of mid-grade desktops or laptops may want to stick with less resource intensive options like the Internet Security edition. A good amount of installed memory is recommended (4GB and up. It'll run fine with much less of course, but to keep it from bogging down the system during heavy use, more is always better).

A few notes about optional services. For one, there's a lot. Services like Facebook/Twitter protection are there, but if you protect your account with a strong password, this is really superfluous. The BitDefender web screen is nice without being too obtrusive - warning you of known dangerous web pages. There's an online vault of sorts that lets you use their servers to store crucial data you can access from anywhere provided you create a free profile. The default is 2GB, which is plenty for photos or documents you really don't want to lose, but there are upgraded options for a premium. Same goes for ID Theft protection. A very, very basic option is there, but I would recommend a dedicated service if you're into that kind of thing.

About the price, if you can catch a deep, deep discount like I did through buying the disc, do it. The retail price of this very same package is many times what I paid for it ($20).

Lastly the interface by default is, well, a little ineffective. When you get in to the settings of a particular component it's all good and well, but you have to find the less-obvious scroll bar to find all your options. There's a grid view that's much better, but until you find it or the scroll bar, BitDefender's less used options are obscured from your knowledge.

5 out of 5 eggsA Diamond in the rough!!

Pros: Auto-pilot is a great idea!, runs "silently" as it says. Pre-scans the system BEFORE installation. Complete system security with nothing extra to pay for later.

Cons: Haven't found one as of yet.

Other Thoughts: This product has surprised me in every way. It does what it claims, "silently" as it states. How refreshing for a product to do what it states!! I would've never tried this w/o the promo deal for 20 bucks, and am sure glad that I did. I switched from AVG and will not be looking back either! Autopilot is a great idea, and it convienently keeps everything secure without being intrusive and the biggest plus is that it's low-resource. It doesn't take a ton of your power to run it. Recommend this product to anyone that needs security... that's for sure.

5 out of 5 eggsA learning curve

Pros: The software is rather like good I guess. It seems to work well enough. I think it caught a few threats in the wild and I learned to like it.

Cons: It's rather needy. Like a demanding child. It wants you to register, it wants updates, sometimes it will pout and hiss at you with constant demands to fix issues.

Other Thoughts: Again, it seems to work and I rather do without the constant diaglog boxes asking for issues to resolve. Not worth taking a star away.

5 out of 5 eggsBitdefender Total Security 2013 3/pcs/2 years

Pros: I've been using the best version of Zone Alarm for the last 7-8 years. I just installed Bitdefender and now wish I hadn't wasted the time and money on ZA. Bitdefender boots faster, scans my 2 TB HD faster ( in 1/4 the time for a full scan), seems to make my computer run faster, and best of all the sale price was $20 for 3 computers for 2 years, VS $60 for 3 computers for 1 year.

Cons: It wasn't free and didn't come with a supermodel to install it.

Other Thoughts: I7-2600K overclocked to 4.1 with water cooling, 32 GB ram, 140 GB SSD, 2X1TB HD 7200 rpm drives in raid 0

5 out of 5 eggsHappy so far

Pros: For the past couple weeks that I've used this I've been really happy with the robustness of it. I haven't noticed any slowdowns in terms of Internet speed like some of the other reviewers say they experienced. And it does a much better job than the free solution I was using before.
2 years of support.

Cons: None that I've experienced so far.

Other Thoughts: While this did lengthen the boot time for my computer, I didn't see this as a real con because even though I do have an SSD, I don't need my computer to be fully booted a few seconds after I push the power button. I imagine it lengthened my boot time because Bitdefender is now starting before I even log in to windows and doing its job, which that peace of mind is priceless to me. And it didn't lengthen the boot time too much in my opinion.

Bitdefender offers a 30 day free trial, which I used before deciding to make the commitment of buying their product, I recommend you try it out as well before you buy to see if quality and thoroughness is what you want in an anti virus program

1 out of 5 eggsBe sure to create a system restore point before installing

Pros: I used to love BitDefender a couple years ago (2010 version). It was thorough, smooth, and easy to use. This 2013 version messed my computer up so badly that I could not use it, so all Pros belong to 2010 version.

Cons: Totally hosed my system--neither Firefox nor IE would connect to anything (I did manage to get chrome to connect to Google at first, but then it wouldn't work, either). Even after I uninstalled the program, my browsers still would not connect. I had to do a system restore and even that didn't work at first--I had to boot to safe mode first and then restore.
On top of losing connectivity, my quad core machine became unresponsive as soon as BitDefender was installed. Task manager said that the CPU was operating at 100%. I killed a few processes that seemed unrelated to BitDefender, but were not doing anything before the install and got it down to 50%--most of which was svchost.exe so who knows what exactly was going on there but it was too coincidental that it started only as soon as BD was installed and then was no longer a problem after the restore.

Other Thoughts: As I said before--I WAS a huge fan of BD. I was excited to renew my expired BD license and keep using what I thought was such a fabulous product, but they changed something and it made my system barf all over me for 45 min while I tried to fix it. My advice: avoid this one! Maybe in another 3 years they'll decide to go back to the good thing they had going on in 2010 and if they do, I'll give them another try, but my 2013 is going in the trash.

5 out of 5 eggsBest AV Program for 2012 with a Reason!

Pros: This is one of the lightest weight AV programs on the market. It's easy to install. It uses very little resources from the computer. It's unobtrusive when running. It simply works. Better yet, the Total Security package comes with extra utilities for managing your computer not traditionally packaged with an AV program giving added value.

Cons: In my experience, none.

Other Thoughts: I honestly can't understand all the negative feedback for this suite of programs. I have literally tried every legitimate AV software package on the market, and none of them compare with Bitdefender with respect to price, performance, and range of features. I'm inclined to agree with the company that installation problems are user error. The only time I ever had an issue with Bitdefender installation was due to a virus infestation (most likely a rootkit virus) blocking ALL AV software install attempts. Once the system had been rebuilt from scratch, Bitdefender installed seamlessly. As for others complaining about having to download files from the internet to complete the install, have you ever heard of updates? The problem with every packaged software you buy "off shelf" is that it is already hopelessly out of date. It is OBVIOUS that you will have to download updates! I install Bitdefender on every system I build. Every customer I've had who uses it raves about its performance and the protection it provides. I cannot recommend this product enough.
