5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Easy to use. Intuitive. Fast. Generally accurate PDF OCR, especially in cases of low contrast and peculiar fonts, though it is possible to fool it with highly-styled fonts. With clean copy and simple fonts, it's normally 100% accurate. I especially like the ScreenshotReader OCR.

Cons: The disk foot print is pretty large -- 460MB.

Other Thoughts: Got this as a Shell Shocker. It paid for itself in about the first 15 minutes of use. It's so easy to use that you probably won't need the user manual or help files, for the basic operations anyway. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed.

Pros: Very cheap (as a $10 special).

Cons: Mediocre translation at best.

Other Thoughts: I downloaded the latest version off their website. The plan was to translate PDF forms into MSword so I could fill them out and to translate some manuals so I could cut and paste my own crib sheets. The first 2 page document translated perfectly. The next document was 10 pages PDF and ended up being 20 pages in word. The program put each page's footer on a page of it's own. There were also several places where enlarged and bold text threw off the formatting. My next test had a table in it and the last column of the first row's data was blank. The program moved the first column's next row's data value into that slot and the entire rest of the data was misaligned. Frankly, I get as good or better translations out of open office or other free translators.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but only at sale price

Pros: $9 PDF creator software and it has a workaround for most compatability issues.

Cons: Updates are proivided on their website. You have to download the full install, uninstall your old product then install the new.

The office integration feature will crash Office 2013. If you have 2013 make sure you uncheck the office integration feature durring the install. No update/fix for this yet. You can create PDF's from within office documents by selecting the Abby PDF printer when printing the document.

Other Thoughts: At $9 it's hard to dock so many eggs for this product. I need an Adobe converter program for school and the school provides adobe pro at a reduced cost but it's still $80 after all is said and done.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked well for my requirements.

Pros: - worked fine for my needs
- price was good as I got it during a sale

Cons: - none yet

Other Thoughts: HOW TO GET MOST ANY REBATE!
(note: I am not a lawyer and all info provided is my own opinion, not legal advice)
(note: my info is about rebate companies in general; no specific rebate fulfillment company is being named, nor singled out)

I wanted to share a few tips for those folks that do NOT get their rebates.

After years of fighting with rebate companies I finally adopted a different approach. I no longer wait 45 minutes or more on the phone. I no longer spend money on stamps and envelopes to "prove" my rebate was valid and to re-send copies of everything.

My new approach - I make the rebate companies PROVE to 3rd party government agencies (BBB, State AG, FTC, US Postal inspectors) that I did not meet the rebate requirements.
When a gov agency "has my **PDF copies in hand", then the rebate company looks inept because the rebate company "should have" the same forms. To show otherwise indicates that they either lost the forms or misplaced them.

1. I make paper & **PDF copies of all forms, UPC codes and receipts.
2. I fill out forms and mail within rebate terms.
3. If I do not receive rebate by the time frame listed on rebate form I then proceed as follows:
a. Fill out BBB.org online form. BBB assigns case#. I send BBB an email or letter with associated case# and **PDF copies.
b. contact State AG - both my state's AG and rebate company's state AG. [note: I believe the rebate company's State AG is the more important of the two, since the rebate company is under their jurisdiction].
Send them all associated copies of forms,UPC, etc.
c. Contact FTC - send them same info. Rebate form copies and receipts.

4. This is a big one. I contact the US POSTAL INSPECTORS.

Why? Because IF a rebate company FALSELY claims you did NOT fulfill rebate terms (when in fact you DID correctly fulfill the terms), it is pretty clear.
Such actions should constitute MAIL FRAUD!.

Also, contract fraud can contain both a criminal and civil liability.

[note: Remember, it is the US Postal inspectors you should contact, not the US post office].

5. In closing, what follows is just "my .02 cents" and my personal opinion about the problem of those rebate companies that refuse to fulfill VALID rebate claims.

If any government or quasi-government oversight agency receives several complaints of $5 or $10 or even $20 rebate issues, they might blow it off.
Failure to fulfill a rebate is most likely just a contract law issue.

BUT if they receive complaints about a company that CONSISTENTLY uses the USPS to purposely commit FRAUD
on an ongoing basis, that provides them with pattern of law breaking.
Generally it appears that "contract fraud" (in this case a rebate contract) consists of both possible criminal and a civil action(s).

1 out of 5 eggsMyrebateonline.com, the worst rebate center I've ever seen

Pros: None

Cons: I should have read the previous comments before I placed the order.
I submitted the rebate in Nov, 2012. I didn't see any status update online till Jan 2013.
I called the center. A girl who knew nothing said she couldn't find my submission in their system. She then tried to manually put my submission into the system which she failed. After spending 10 minutes, we finally found it's because I had a submission two years ago with my current email address but my previous apartment address. This made a huge techinical difficulty for her. She said, "Well, in this case, I can't create another account for you using the same email and different address. I can't change the currently existing account's address to your current address either. I have to ask our special team to deal with it."
I then got an email from their special team, was told to fax info to them.
I followed the instruction. Then my rebate got rejected due to missing original upc.
I called again this morning. Politely asking them to validate my rebate. The lady I was talking to was rude, kept saying if the upc were lost in the mail, they didn't have any responsiblity to validate the rebate.
I sent out more than 40 letters during the holiday season. This rebate submission letter with another one sent to the same place, happened to be the only two lost!
If you really would like to deal with this rebate processing center, be sure to get your rebate letter with a deliver confirmation at least although I had not chance to test if that works.....

1 out of 5 eggsLook out!

Pros: None.

Cons: It should be expected ABBYY will look for any reason to disallow the rebate. For that reason, my submission a year ago on this same deal was done with extreme care to be 100% correct. After 3 or 4 months with no rebate received, I had some conversations with Newegg that seemed to go nowhere. Even with good documentation of the submission. After I had completely given up, it did finally arrive.

Other Thoughts: I never did install the software.

1 out of 5 eggsRebate issue

Pros: Waiting for the rebate to open the box!

Cons: Purchased with a rebate & carefully submitted every required item keeping copies of the submission. They Abbyy claim to have not received it. The envelope had a return address that didn't get it back to me either. Hmm. Makes this waaaay more expensive than I intended.

Other Thoughts: With the UPC symbol gone, Newegg can't take the unopened product back.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding pdf converter

Pros: Had to convert 500+ pages of pdf of international characters to a word doc and an excel doc. The key thing is that you can specify exactly the languages to output. This program did it with ease.

Also pdf transformer install the PDF-XChange 4.0 printer device by default. This enhanced my entire office 2010 printing of files to a pdf.

Cons: You almost have to ask support whether the lastest version is available somewhere. When I bought this, it wasn't the latest version. What I downloaded from their website publicly was not the latest version.

1 out of 5 eggsMisleading description

Pros: It does convert to PDF and back but:

Cons: It has really limited functionality, It can combine 2 PDF in one but it only add one to another without even giving you options to rearrange simple page order.... Or delete page from existing PDF file without converting it to some other format first.

Other Thoughts: I've expected more, It has really limited usage for me as i need very specific operation to be performed with existing PDF files. Lets say I need to combine 2 PDF files front and back scans of same document in to one - I cant, I have to scan each page and add each new page to final file. This is sad....... wasted eighty bucks.
