(See system requirements.)
  • newegg Share Your Hard Drive You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.
  • newegg Strong Security and Acess Controls Rest easy — AirPort Extreme takes strong measures to prevent unauthorized intrusion into your wireless network. Yet it’s still easy for authorized users to connect to the base station, thanks to its simple set-up utility and powerful access controls. You can set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.
  • newegg Works with iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, and more AirPort Extreme works with Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Router I have EVER owned

Pros: Super easy setup
Super easy firmware upgrades
Lots of neat features
Seems to work forever
Good price

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Some may say the price is a con. You get a great deal with this router, and I have used this router for 6 years now, and it's still going strong. *knocks on wood*
I consider feel I definitely got my money's worth!

5 out of 5 eggsAirport Extreme Base Station

Pros: I've been using this router for about a year now. I've used different type of routers from different brands and THIS ONE is THE easiest SETUP router of ALL.

This router can be used in commercial or residential area if YOU ARE just looking for an easy setup.

Cons: No headaches, No frustrations!!!! JUST PURE JOY!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: Just a reminder. You get what you pay for. Why do you think Cadillac, Mercedes, and BMW cost more than Honda, Toyota, or Hyundai? QUALITY my friends. If you rather spend minutes/hours setting up or fixing your router, then go get a cheaper and/or different router.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Easy to link up multiple devices together to cover the house.

Cons: Range is not as far as friends had said. My only real complaint, and that's just the way the device is built.

Other Thoughts: Pretty device, long power supply cable.

5 out of 5 eggswhat's up with the price?

Pros: The AirPort Extreme works well for my home network.

Cons: What's up with NewEgg's price? It's on sale right now for $10 MORE than the Apple Store's price [both in Canada and the US].

Oh, wait, there's a discount code for $5, so you only pay $5 more than retail.

This just seems really odd, as I've noticed NewEgg has done this for a bunch of Apple stuff, both new and refurb stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect plug-and-play wireless router

Pros: Stupid-easy setup. It just works. Perfect.

Cons: Relatively expensive. Limited configuration options.

Must use Apple's software to install and configure. No biggie for me as I don't need anything complicated.

Other Thoughts: I've tried pretty much every router from the usual suspects of well-known manufacturers over the past 10 years. With one exception, they've all disappointed me after a relatively short period of use. Some have been junk. After my last two routers kept dropping the wireless connection, I went to the Apple side and purchased the AirPort Extreme. I've had no regrets since and couldn't be happier.

Here's what we have connected to the router (all wirelessly) on a daily basis: two high-end desktop systems, a high-end gaming laptop, a media PC, two ultrabooks for typical business use, a 10-inch iPad (whatever the latest model is), a Nexus 7 tablet, and a Google (Samsung) Chromebook.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Aware!!!

Pros: Fine wireless router. Speedy and stable.

Cons: WILL NOT WORK WITH Windows network storage beyond 32 gig. Network storage device must be formatted for FAT 32 and FAT addresses only 32 GB. Also, good luck in finding a work around. Swiss Knife is mentioned as a free app for formatting FAT 32 above 32 GB but it is not Win 7 compatible. Also, the AES USB ports are NOT powered so your devices MUST be self powered.

Other Thoughts: Apple customer support does not have it's ducks in a row. I made three calls in aid to setting the router up and I got a different person each time with different answer to issues regarding the 90 setup assistance.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for what most of us need

Pros: I have had this router, after buying 6 or so routers, for about 4 years now. I have never had to reset it, and it's wireless connection is visible down at the end of my block. I do not enjoy the complex ins and outs of networking, and the software for this router does not make you sweat those details. This router has been under constant heavy use for years inside my desk and still hasn't had problem 1.

Cons: Some would definitely say this has limited functions for networking. I would agree. Don't buy this router as a hotspot for your business if you want complex mac address timing control, etc. Buy this if you want to have your whole house and guest house and neighbor's house connect to the internet wirelessly, forever.

Other Thoughts: This is expensive, but not if you count the time it takes to have your internet go down and you have to restart your router all the time.

5 out of 5 eggsApple AirPort Extreme

Pros: Easy configuration, strong signal, solid build quality

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: I've owned this product I would say around a month. The setup wasn't as bad as some people say and I didn't mind having to download software since I am on a Windows computer after all. The build quality is really nice and the extreme weighs around 2 pounds. I'm currently using it in bridge mode since we already have another router in my household, so I haven't been able to test it's capabilities as a router quite yet. This router will need to be connected to a modem to be used as a router, otherwise it will only operate in bridge mode since it will detect another NAT device on the network. So far it hasn't crapped out on me and gives me a solid signal all over my house. For the people that complain about only having 3 gigabit ethernet ports; if you seriously need more ports just buy a unmanaged switch or two and stop whining. I have it currently connected to a Netgear JGS524 24 port rackmount switch, with one line in from the primary router and one line out to the WAN port of the extreme. I've tested the USB port for network storage with a small USB drive and the transfer speed for files over the network was a little slow, but then again doing file transfers to any hard drive over wifi will be slower than doing it on a wired connection. It should be mentioned that the extreme only supports HFS, HFS+, and FAT32 formats for an external drive and doesn't support exFAT or NTFS formats. I haven't tested the USB port with a printer at all, so I can't comment on that. The unit does tend to run a little warm and I mean a little not a lot, but so far I haven't noticed any performance issues because of it. Just to give you an idea of the signal coverage; I'm currently connected to the extreme writing this review in my bedroom upstairs with the extreme in the basement in an average sized house and there are no signal issues whatsoever as I sit here typing away. Overall this has been a great router for my home network and even though it is a little expensive, don't write this router off completely if you're currently shopping for a router. Thanks for reading my lengthy review.
