Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

Apple

The intelligent, easy-to-use AirPort Extreme Base Station with simultaneous dual-band support is the perfect wireless access point for home, school, or office. Apple

Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Extreme gives you up to 3X faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal¹. And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.

Apple

Designed with Performance in Mind

With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Extreme now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

Apple

Easy Setup for iOS and OS X

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Extreme and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you’re using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is just as fast and just as easy.

Apple

Share Your Hard Drive or Printer

AirPort Extreme can turn any external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi-Fi network. So all the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone, Mac and PC users alike. You can even connect a printer and share it wirelessly.

Apple

Compatibility and Security

Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Extreme. That’s because it’s compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac specifications. And since AirPort Extreme features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

1 out of 5 eggsPure junk on a junk cracker

Pros: Pretty

Cons: Overpriced
Drops connections each night
Unstable
NO REFUNDS
Wont work under Windows

Other Thoughts: I bought this because it was supposed to work on a Windows machine. The trouble started the first night. It dropped all wireless connections. Got it back up and it did it again the next night...and the next. My old router never dropped a single time nor needed a reboot.

Called Apple and was told it was not the hardware it was their software. Their Windows software was out of date compared to their Mac software and they had no plans to fix it. I was told all I could do was either use it on a Mac / Apple product or if I was dead set using it on a Win machine that I would need to either own a Mac / Apple machine or borrow a friends and run the newer software from there to make it work.

So in effect Apple is telling people their product works with a Win machine until you give them $220+ and then they tell you too bad so sad.

Even worse is there is NO REFUND for this and I bought a 1 year extended service plan with it. All totally useless. Now Im stuck with a pretty white brick Ill have to try and sell on the site that rhymes with fleabay for almost nothing.

Unbelievable. I thought Apple was high end and trustworthy. DO NOT BUY THIS or any other Apple product if you use Windows machines.

I bought a ASUS RT-N56U N600 to replace it and it has been on over a week now and not dropped a single connection and is just as fast. Plus it was less than $100 and if it had failed I could have gotten a full refund.

5 out of 5 eggsTotal awesomeness

Pros: I already tried all them routers of the 2014 and I liked this one out of all the Cisco, linksys, net gear, tp link, d-link, Asus, plantronics... And this has had no problem ever since I bougth it the other one had problem by connection drop just like cellphones with low reception right in the living room where it was sitting and they also had problems with the IP address DNS server cause it asked for the host name and other info that only the technician from the Internet provider knows I got tired of that garbage that I was like I not going to have home wifi internet anymore until I found this awesome router that has not have any problems like the ones I mentioned I love it cause is so small and it could reach my connection all the way to my parking lot In the apartment premises I always come out of work and park my car and I m drinking a beer outside while watching an action movie on netflix in my iPad Air....

Cons: None at all

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the price

Pros: Very small footprint

Cons: -No WebUI
-3 Lan Ports!
-Expensive!
-No configurable antennas
-No on/off switch
-Very firm power plug, difficult to reboot router

Other Thoughts: iMac had its ethernet port die and needed to configure router from old WinXP laptop. Airport Utility not compaitble with old computer and no way to access through browser. LAME!

Replaced with a TP-Link, works better and only $100

5 out of 5 eggsWhy did i wait so long

Pros: Easy to setup and configure. LAN and WAN connections work consistently with no drop in wireless connection. I previously had Cisco (Linksys) EA6500 which was an upgrade from my Linksys E3000. Hands down this unit tops them both.

Cons: Wish it would have had one more LAN port so I didn't have to utilize a 4 port ethernet hub for my 2nd desktop in office. In my original setup i utilized 2 ports for desktop and other 2 connections for the wall plugged ethernet adaptors so my son's XBOX 360 and PS4 could get internet connection. Unfortunately wireless online play is not so great where the gaming consoles are located.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat range, Great Reliability

Pros: Most of the features you might be used from Netgear or Linksys products are available through the Airport Utility.

IPv6 native and tunnels available and work great.

Great range

Cons: There is no webpage management and you need to have an app installed to manage the access point.

Most of the changes you make require rebooting the access point even if it is just minor DHCP assignment type settings.

Trying to find the current IP or mac address of active devices is very difficult and there's no handy way to add a static lease for a device that is already got a temporary IP.

Wish it had AirPlay for iTunes like the cheaper airport and one more gigabit port (only 3 LAN side).

Other Thoughts: Despite what looks like it would be a negative review based on the quantity of comments in pros vs cons, this is actually a solid review for the Airport. It is great apple build quality and reliability.

I replaced a fairly recent Linksys that started dropping wireless connections and I haven't had a single blip since. I even got a SiXXs tunnel up and was able to access IPv6 sites on all the home computers and there were reasonable firewall controls on the IPv6 side as well.

All in all I'm pretty happy with it and am glad I sprung for the Apple product, I've been burned by Netgear and Linksys now a few times and I'm hoping this one puts on a good show for about the same price as a comparable Linksys/Cisco product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Bought this to replace an older Linksys e2000, what a difference. Setup was easy using Airport Utility app on IOS. Had to fix a few recommendations by the set-up manager involving NAT(I'm on Uverse) and it worked as soon as it was reset. The range of has increased significantly. Everything connected to it is faster. My Roku Box is much faster and no longer stops to buffer when playing videos in Plex.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Product

Pros: I just moved into an apartment in a big city where the walls are made of thick concrete or something not easily penetrated by wireless signals, and so my Motorola Surfboard 6580 Gateway Modem/Router's low-quality built-in antenna just wouldn't cut it anymore. I initially tried purchasing the Asus EA-N66 to use as a repeater, but that failed; I then tried plugging in the Asus to use as an Access Point, but even after I configured it not to conflict with the Surfboard, it still would randomly lose its connection a couple times a day and I'd have to reset it. This was getting old, and I was looking at getting either the new D-Link DGL-5500 or an Amped router (because all of my computers are PCs), but then I decided what the heck and went out and purchased this thing along with a new Motorola SB6141 cable modem. After I got the modem up and running, I was able to get the AirPort Extreme set up via my iPhone within a minute and it has been smoking fast ever since. Even when the Asus EA-N66 was working, I was only getting about 3 to 5mbps download and 1mbps with the free Internet that comes with my apartment. After setting up my network over the AirPort Extreme, I am getting speeds of 10mbps down and 3mpbs up wirelessly in the room that is through some of the thick walls that I was having issues with. As a PC user whose only Apple products have been iPods, iPads, and iPhones, I was a little skeptical (paranoid?) of whether my PCs would be okay with this, but it is working wonderfully for all of my devices irregardless of what operating system they are running on. (Duh, but for some reason I thought there might be an issue). Lastly, this thing looks great, and it doesn't have any external antennas for my cat to chew on (which is one reason why I was looking at the DGL-5500 and ultimately decided against an Amped product). Apple has done a great job with this unit.

Cons: None (yet).
