Features

Features
Performance: 48 Gbps, max.; wirespeed performance across ports
Layer 2 switching: full-rate nonblocking on all ports, full-/half-duplex autonegotiation, flow control, IEEE 802.1Q VLAN support, IEEE 802.1p traffic prioritization, IGMP snooping; more
Convergence: 4 hardware queues per port; traffic prioritization at Layer 2 (802.1p) and at Layer 3 (TOS with DSCP); auto-VLAN assignment for voice traffic; more
Switch management: Web-based configuration, 3Com Network Supervisor and Network Director, other SNMP management tools; CLI using console port

Managed Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switch
Auto-voice VLAN automatically assigns Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic to a voice-dedicated VLAN, optimizing this delay-sensitive traffic
No need to configure the switch if default settings are acceptable
If more control desired, the completely redesigned switch interface allows even novice users to quickly and confidently configure the switch
VLANs segment the network by grouping users based on their data or traffic requirements, making the best use of available bandwidth
With LACP link aggregation, automatically group ports together to form an ultra-high-bandwidth trunked connection to the network backbone and help prevent traffic bottlenecks
IEEE 802.1X network access control provides standards-based security combined with local authentication
MAC- and IP-based ACLs enable network traffic filtering and enhance network control
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) support improves network compatibility, scalability and availability
IGMP snooping and multicast filtering optimizes network performance

Pros: Nice interface, black color, good number of ports.

Cons: I can't get VLANs to work properly. It won't let me modify VLAN 1 to let it connect to the tagged VLAN1 packets coming from my other switch, meaning I either need to make everything VLAN2 (which causes problems) or forget about it.

Other Thoughts: 3com SuperStack switches are better, Baseline REALLY means Baseline.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch, no headaches

Pros: Does everything it claims and is very easy to set up. Seeing throughputs at 50 to 80 MB/sec, which is all the faster the hard drives are.

Cons: I suppose it's loud, so the home user may not like it.

Other Thoughts: You can't hear it over a typical server.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy unless it is going in a soundproof room.

Pros: Good specs, slightly above average for a L2 managed router.

Cons: Unit has two fans that are ridiculously loud.

Fans also have a psychosis inducing high frequency harmonic that creates uncontrollable urge in humans to unplug the unit. Seriously.

Other Thoughts: RMA's item b/c fan noise and harmonic whine. It is just not possible to live in the same room with this item.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Excellent, simple setup, fast transfer speeds.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: It just works and well at that. Web based configuation is simple to understand and easy jump into.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value SMB/home switch for a closet or garage

Pros: Great switch for a small or medium biz, or home. 24 ports of wirespeed Gigabit Ethernet with support for: Spanning Tree, SNMP + syslog, statistics + diagnostics, VLAN + QoS support, 802.1x + RADIUS + ACLs, and more. Good web based admin too. Std AC power cable (no power brick).

Cons: I agree with the other reviewers. Two small side-mounted fans are louder than they need to be. Put this puppy in a garage or wiring closet. :)

Other Thoughts: Hard to find another switch with these qualities/features for the same price. If 3Com would just replace the fans with quiet ones, this would be a killer. Still very happy with it.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat edge switch for small environments

Pros: I am a network admin for a small hosptial. I chose this and the 2948-SPF to replace the old 3300 superstack II's. All in all they both are great units, where else can you get all these features at 1Gb to the client for under $1500 per switch???

Cons: One thing to watch out for, this and the 2948-SPF DOES NOT SUPPORT automatic VLAN propogation. But I guess thats what I get for not buying $2k switches... They still work great after manually setting up the vlans, its just lame that I have to do that across 18 edge switches...

Other Thoughts: I think 3com did a great job putting these features in the reach of small budgeted companies to improve their network infrastructure. So, if you want a great cheap switch get this one, if you want ALL the bells and whistles of a enterprise switch, spend $2k each on a 4000 series or go Cisco.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked fine while it lasted ...

Cons: after 4 hours, it died completely.

Other Thoughts: I'll try a different brand next time.
