Best Choice for Visualization
The explosive growth in visualization is leading to an increasing demand for network performance. With more Virtual Machines (VMs) running on each multi-core server, networking traffic is dramatically increased, with each VM competing for available I/O bandwidth. Intel's family of Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X520 addresses networking bottlenecks in virtualized environments. These adapters enable network-intensive applications to achieve the performance expected in a virtualized environment.


The Intel Ethernet X520 family of adapters provides the best networking performance available in the industry, whether the physical port is configured in an emulation mode using the virtual switch in the Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), or is directly assigned to a virtual machine. In the emulation mode, Intel's I/O technology. Virtual Machine Device queues (VMDq) optimizes network performance by offloading data sorting and copying from the software Virtual Switch in the VMM to the Intel Ethernet 82599 10 Gigabit Controller. This configuration is best suited for a large number of VMs running standard applications that have limited bandwidth and latency requirements.

For mission-critical applications, where| dedicated I/O is required for maximum network performance, users can assign a dedicated virtual adapter port to a VM. Using the PCI-SIG SR-IOV capability on an Intel Ethernet X520 adapter provides direct VM connectivity and data protection across VMs. SR-IOV technology enables the data to bypass the software virtual switch and provides near-native performance. It assigns either physical or virtual I/O ports to individual VMs directly. This technology is best suited for applications that demand the highest I/O throughput and lowest latency performance such as database, storage, financial and other applications.

PCI-SIG SR-IOV is a mechanism for devices to advertise their ability to be directly assigned to multiple virtual machines. SR-IOV enables the partitioning of a PCI Express* (PCIe) function into many virtual interfaces for the purpose of sharing the resources of a PCIe device in a virtual environment These virtual interfaces are called Virtual Functions. Each virtual function can support a unique and separate data path for 1/0-related functions within the PCIe hierarchy. Use of SR-IOV with a networking device, for example, enables the bandwidth of a single port (function) to be partitioned into smaller slices that can be allocated to specific VMs, or guests, via a standard interface.

Support for Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
FCoE encapsulates Fiber Channel frames over standard Ethernet networks, enabling Fiber Channel to take advantage of 10 GbE networks while preserving its native protocol. The X5Z0 adapters offer FCoE hardware acceleration to provide performance comparable to FC HBAs. The adapters support Data Center Bridging, also known as Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), which enables customers to configure traffic classes and priorities to deliver a lossless Ethernet fabric. An Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X5Z0 reduces TCO by eliminating redundant fabrics and saves the cost of expensive FC HBAs and FC switch ports.

Support for iSCSI
The adapters provide complete support for proven native OS and VMM iSCSI initiators as well as iSCSI boot. Historically, CRC3ZC computation has degraded system performance, but now with the CRC instruction set included in the latest Intel Xeon processors, CRC validation is possible with minimal impact to network throughput while delivering superior data integrity.

Reliable Performance
The family of X5Z0 adapters includes a number of advanced features that enable it to provide industry-leading performance and reliability.

Security Optimizations

Cons: Expensive

Other Thoughts: Two of these are directly connecting two servers together, DRBD disk replication for two Proxmox nodes.
iperf measures the connection at 9.41 Gbps

5 out of 5 eggsSmokin fast 10Gbps SFP+ dual port adapter

Pros: Working like a champ in my vSphere 5.5 home lab. Pushing max theoretical 10G throughput (roughly 9.7Gbps) using iperf VM to VM on different hypervisor hosts hooked to a HP procurve 2910al w/ 2 J9008 dual port 10G SFP+ modules. I used a direct attached copper (DAC)/twinax cables I got off the infamous bidding site we all know and love for about 1/3 of the price of typical 3m twinax cables and they were HP branded/part numbered as well.

Cons: None that I know of thus far other than reputable 10G switches are pricey still, at roughly $200 per 10G port you really can't gripe too much for the adapter though if you plan to use twinax and for-go the cost of optics which is great for short-haul.

Pros: These cards work well. Very well supported open source drivers, and well maintained by Intel. They generally Just Work.

Cons: Artificially firmware locked to Intel optics. Absolutely unforgivable in a datacenter environment. Want to migrate that Twinax connected server across the room and need to swap to LR optics? You're out of luck and you better hope the entire ops team realizes this before scheduling anything. Lord help you if you find you're out of the right length twinax and need to get a server up quickly during an emergency!

Latest Linux drivers have a module load parameter you can use to disable this ridiculous firmware check. However, if you run these cards w/ a statically compiled kernel you must modify the driver source to get around the vendor lock.

Other Thoughts: Great performance, well supported, but absolutely inexcusable artificial vendor-lock for optics. Look at picking up the Supermicro branded versions of these cards (no firmware lock), or looking elsewhere at Myrinet for a company that makes extremely well performing cards that don't play games that make operations hell.

If you run Linux and can live with using loadable modules, you can also disable this check.

No Intel, I am not going to stock a bin of optics just for you in every location.

Pros: Generally available to consumers. Working fine with GBIC transceiver by Axiom, model E10GSFPSR-AX and multi mode fiber cable in Windows 2008 R2 with Intel driver version on Supermicro X8DTU-F linked to HP switch.

Cons: 10G still too expensive.

Pros: When feeding 3Gbaud traffic with standard 1500byte frames thru this NIC, performance is better due to interrupt offloading capabilities, compared to Intel Quad-port gigabit NICs.

Pros: Extremely pleased with these, but I did my homework before purchasing. They compose a VMware vSphere 5 storage network.

2x Dell 8024F switches
5x Dell R710s with one of these cards in each server (ESXi 5 hosts)
1x Dell c2100 Server running NFS off of Nexenta CE 3.1.3 with 2 of these cards in it (one PCI based as sold here and another that is a mezzanine card) for an aggregate 40Gbps throughput to/from the SAN.
tons of Cisco SFP-H10GB-CU3M/SFP-H10GB-CU1M cables used for connectivity.

These were chosen for compatibility/reliability as we planned to build our own SAN solution after pricing every storage vendor we could fathom. We ended up spending a fraction of the quotes we were offered and got more for our $.

Shipping as always was remarkably fast w/ NewEgg.

Cons: Cost? They can be had elsewhere for substantially less.

Other Thoughts: Do your homework and buy the right cables, etc for these and you won't regret it.

Pros: Installed several of these in different platforms. No compatibility problems with Windows server, VMware ESX 5 or QNAP SAN.

Cons: The are pricey, 10x fast as gigabit, but more than 10x the cost of gigabit.

Other Thoughts: If you are going to use these with SFP+ direct connect cables DO NOT BUY AN OFF BRAND CABLE! These cables have firmware chips in them that negotiate the connection. Get either the Cisco or Netgear cables they have here at Newegg.

Pros: In contrast to other reviews I figured I had to add that this adapter does work well with Copper Twinaxial cables, Cisco included. I have one of these adapters in a storage server I built using iSCSI as the protocol. This adapter hooked up seamlessly with a Cisco Twinaxial cable to a Cisco 2960-S (certain models of the 2960-S have 2x 10-Gigabit SFP+ modules.) that particular server now acts as a SAN in my network, jumbo frames fully supported and doesn't show the slightest sign of slowing. The Cisco Twinaxial cable combined with this adapter gives the benefit of significantly lower latency than its Cat-6 ethernet relative and provides outstanding results in my setup.

Cons: As the other reviewer stated, it seems it is not compatible with certain transceivers, you may want to check compatibility if you are planning to use this in a fiber network. Again if you are sticking with copper, the Cisco Twinaxial cables work just fine.

Pros: Well packaged.

Cons: Only compatible with two Intel SFP+ transceivers, the E10GSFPSR or the E10GSFPLR. Specifically didn't work with my Cisco SFP-10G-SR modules.

Other Thoughts: Won't work with non-intel SFP+ transceivers.

The marketing materials say:
"Intel’s family of Intel® Ethernet X520 Server Adapters with SFP+ connectivity are the most flexible and scalable Ethernet adapters for today’s demanding data center environments."

Not flexible enough, in my opinion.
