5 out of 5 eggsFast!

Pros: Faster than the built-in NIC on my ASUS P5G41-M LE/CSM LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard, which I found out after said NIC failed me. It fit in an old style PCI slot just fine, and works well. I mean, what else are you going to use a PCI slot for? A GPU? Not quite.

Cons: None apparent.

Other Thoughts: I'll grant you the ASUS motherboard is a bit dated, but so is this NIC, and it works well in combination. The Intel NIC's firmware is easy to use, especially if you're used to working with Intel motherboards, which I was using at the time, since I was working at Intel (not "for", "at") at the time. I wasn't an Intel employee, but I like the quality of their products. I am a professional system administrator, with more than 20 years of experience, so when I say my "tech knowledge" is "high", I'm for real.

5 out of 5 eggsWoks Great with Win7-x64

Pros: Win7x64/SP1 installs Microsoft drivers immediately.

The latest version Intel exactly match drivers are in the Intel v15.3 PRO driver pack on their support site. The file is dated 2010.05.04. The HWID is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_107C&SUBSYS_13768086.

I did not find any matches in Driverpacks.Net

Cons: Slightly pricey, but who cares? The irritation of a poor product is remembered long after the pain of a higher price is forgotten.

Other Thoughts: I have used Intel NICs for years. They work great with high reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with VMware ESXi 5.x

Pros: Recognized by and works with both VMware ESXi 5.1 update 2 and also with VMware ESXi5.5 update 1. Works on both out-of-the-box, without the need to side-load drivers.

Cons: Price is a bit high for old tech

3 out of 5 eggsWorks... once configured

Pros: Wake on LAN works
Allows Windows Homegroup
Windows 7 recognized and used built-in drivers

Cons: Had to force the Link Speed and Duplex value to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex to avoid intermittent connection. Would not work for more than a few seconds sporadically in auto-negotiate. My router is using DD-WRT and DHCP for reference.

Other Thoughts: Power management allowed the computer to turn the device off to save power. If checked, when the computer is woke up from sleep it will not have a network connection until the adapter is disabled then enabled.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works out of the box with FreeBSD (9.0-10.0)

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because my on-board ethernet driver was not compatible with FreeBSD.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Bought two NICs for my server and router, neither have had any issues.

Cons: Gigabit network speeds means the bottleneck is placed on my aging HDs.

I have two of these installed and have never had an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for Linux

Pros: Great manufacture quality from Intel, good feature set

Cons: - Fairly expensive for network cards at $30.
- Not well supported by Intel in recent versions of windows (relies on OS drivers)

Other Thoughts: These are fast, good build quality, and feature rich, especially for use on a Linux server, or in a Linux computer. Plug and play on most Linux installations. Windows support in recent (Windows 7+) OS's relies on drivers from Microsoft. Intel is no longer writing the drivers themselves, so it's hit or miss.
