1 out of 5 eggsRuns Hot, then Dies

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Hooked it up and it worked, Pretty quick

Cons: Noticed both ran pretty hot, didn't last too long before they died.

Other Thoughts: I'd try another brand, if you want something that will last.

1 out of 5 eggsEasy to use, bad quality

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: - Cheap
- Easy to use

Cons: - Failed within a year
- Advertised as 500Mbit BUT provides 100Mbit ports... So maximum speed is actually 100Mbit.

Other Thoughts: Although I was moderately unhappy when I found out the advertised 500Mbits is a lie (provided ethernet ports are 100Mbits, speed is then UP TO 100Mbits, not 500), it was easy to install and worked well for a time... until about 7 month after purchase when the one of the device would no longer turn on.
I opened up the case and the capacitors inside are clearly poped out. They probably used the cheapest electronic components available and so it didn't last long.
To avoid...

2 out of 5 eggsUnit Died After 5 Months

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Works satisfactorily for networking my Tivo boxes.

Cons: Power Supply failure after 5 months of use. Device went totally dead in outlet. Newegg wouldn't exchange device, referred me to Actiontec directly, even though it has a 1 year warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsActiontec PWR511K01 so-so

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: - Plug-and-play
- Small form factor
- Cross-vendor compatible (mix and match w/ other standards-based models from other manufacturers)
- Acceptable throughput depending on electric wiring

Cons: - Expensive
- Excessive heat buildup
- Short life (units lasted 4 months, 9 months, and 10 months)
- Warranty requires consumer to pay for return shipment

Other Thoughts: Got a couple of sets while on sale, but still not considered inexpensive. Price would've been fair if not for the units failing relatively quickly. 3 out of 4 units have failed. I returned a pair/kit under warranty (you'll need to ship back a kit even if only 1 unit failed, at your own expense). They'll ship an RMA replacement kit once they receive your units. You can expedite this by cross-shipping -- they take your credit card information and ship you the RMA replacement kit, giving you upto 30 days to return the faulty units otherwise they'll charge you.

So, yay, I'll have to deal with this again by shipping back another kit. NOTE: A kit will be sequential serial numbers, hence why I shipped a bad unit and a good unit as a kit.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo lemons in a convenient package! Unit 1 failed in 9 months, unit 2 failed in 3 months, Actiontec now on my blacklist.

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: -failed within warranty period
-good performance while it worked
-failed suddenly and definitively, no waffling about it

Cons: -Unit 1 (2-unit kit) failed within 7 months (dead, not even a "power" LED light)
-Unit 2 (swapped in for Unit 1) failed within 3 months
-D-Link units I've been using this with (compatible AV+ 500 Mbps) still working after 12 months
-Have you seen all the reviews that mention the same dead unit complaints?

Other Thoughts: Actiontec's now on my blacklist. I'd have given them the benefit of a doubt if only 1 unit failed, but really, the 2nd unit fails in 3 months, with the failures consistent with all the other user reports?

1 out of 5 eggslow quality

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: Good and easy to use technology
Good bandwidth / connectivity

Cons: poor quality power adapter - won't power up after couple months usage

Other Thoughts: I bought two pair (4 pieces) and three out of four pieces have stopped working. They do not boot/power up anymore. This happened one after the other, first one went bad within 3 months and then one more in the next month and another one just went bad today. Have no use for the last remaining one as it only works in pairs. When the first one didn't power up, I thought it was just a one-off bad piece, but now 3 out of 4 have gone bad within 5 months and that cannot be coincidence. Its just pure bad quality manufacturing.
This product is designed to always plugged into directly to the power source, so it's nothing but poor quality when it can't handle being plugged in 24X7. I am going to claim the manufacturer warranty and see how good their customer service is.

1 out of 5 eggsDead

This review is from: Actiontec PWR511K01 500Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit Up to 500Mbps

Pros: No need for long cables

Cons: Connection is slower than wired ethernet. Both died after few months.

Other Thoughts: Fixed them by replacing failed capacitors inside, but i shouldn't have to do that, 1 star
