5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: For what it is and the feature set it offers, this card is perfect. Works well in 7, Vista, XP and Ubuntu 10.04 without any problems. No additional drivers have been needed. If I remember correctly this uses a Realtek chip meaning high compatibility across various operating systems.

Cons: PCI only, though this is preferred for older machines without integrated NICs or OEM machines that need a replacement.

Other Thoughts: A really cheap NIC that works. Purchased as a replacement for a burned-out on-board Realtek on a Compaq (friend never heard of in-line surge protectors with RJ45, RJ11, or cable pass-throughs). A great replacement or initial purchase for a machine that is directly connected to a cable or DSL modem on a home computer. For networking and hi-speed transfers I would consider a 1Gigabit NIC though this is generally fast enough for streaming media.

3 out of 5 eggsAbout Mac Support

Pros: More Info: So apparently drivers for this card are included in Mac os 10.3 and above. However that driver is broken in 10.5 (Leopard) which causes the card to run dirt slow. BUT you can apparently swap the driver over from a Mac running 10.4 and you'll be good to go again. Startech tech support is clueless of course, like all tech support these days. No product knowledge, just minimum wage employees with symptom flow charts.

Cons: Not 10.5 compatible out of the box but you can make it 10.5 compatible.

1 out of 5 eggsCard Didn't Work

Pros: Its a very small card. If it worked, that would be a plus.

Cons: This card didn't work. I tried it connected to my modem and to my LAN. The card was limited to about 0.2MBits downstream and 0.6MBits upstream. Not quite the 100MBits I should have been getting. The card looks brand new sooooo no clue what the problem could be.

Other Thoughts: As far as I can tell, this card is supposed to just work in OS X. No drivers or anything. It was recognized as soon as I plugged it in, but the transfer speeds are unbelievably slow.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: No driver for Mac G5 under 10.5/10.4/10.3. Hence, useless.
