2 out of 5 eggsFast to send; slow to receive

Pros: Writes 1GB files at 42,465,017 Bytes/Sec

Cons: Reads same files at 26,786,274 Bytes/Sec

Other Thoughts: I tested the card on machines with SSDs that transferred these files over hardwired GB cards at about 98GB/sec. I attached the adapter to a USB card on one of the machines and got the results above. I used StarTech chat to see if this was what I should expect - whether read and write speeds should vary. Finally I asked:
"Ok. Just for the record, you're saying that as long I can can send and receive data, regardless of the speed, you'd say the device is working properly?" The tech replied "Yes."

1 out of 5 eggsUseless for anything but Windows

Pros: Came quickly

Cons: As the other comment states, doesn't work with BSD, Linux, or Mac. Probably works with Windows 7, but I don't, so it doesn't matter. The old model was much better.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Surface RT compatible

Pros: For its intended purpose - none

Cons: No drivers for this adapter exist for the Surface RT or PRO. I called their support and was told the same thing. Whats a bit ironic is that within the same chipset, a higher numbered chipset actually has an RT driver so go figure.

Other Thoughts: Manufacturers need to include whether a device is RT/PRO compatible within their verbiage or documentation. Will be sending this thing back.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad

Pros: Works well for a USB 2.0 ethernet adapter.

Cons: Not as fast as I was hoping it would be.

Other Thoughts: I own two of these. The first I bought ~1yr ago and is the older gen to this one (new purchase; just arrived today). The first I am using on a 10/100 network where I needed another NIC on a box with no more room. It has been very reliable with a lot of traffic on it. Concidering how much I have beat on it over the last year, I am giving it 4 stars.

I bought a second one because a build-in Gb network card kicked the bucket. Other then that the box is in fantastic shape, has no free slots in it, and I don't want to replace the MB but I need a network card. Since the USB 2.0 specs out at 480Mb/s [~= 60MB/s] I was really hoping to push around 50MB/s with this device. I took two identical systems and a crossover cable and ran iperf3 tests on Ubuntu Linux. 112MB/s on average is the baseline between the two real built-in Gb cards on those two boxes. I plugged this device in and reran the tests. There was zero fluctuation in all of the iperf3 tests: 35.1MB/s. Every time. No matter which system I plugged it into, or how I rigged the cabling (crossover/used a switch) it was 35.1MB/s.

Now 35.1MB/s isn't too terrible by any means, but I frequently push multi-GB files back and forth to the box this device will sit on and I know I can't expect the max 60MB/s out of it but I would have /really/ liked to have gotten at least mid 40's - upper 50's out of the device.

So it isn't as fast as I would like, but at least I know the first one has been quite reliable thus far. Hopefully this new one is equally reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsI like it.

Pros: Works perfectly. I can connect it to a virtual machine.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Since IT won't let me create my own subnets on their switches anymore, I use this for development in my office. I can connect to the IT network via the integrated NIC to maintain internet and network drive function, and I can connect to other hardware via a switch on my desk. I usually develop in VMs, and this works well for that.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA?

Pros: Compact, USB, gigabit

Cons: Doesn't actually work

Other Thoughts: I have the (presumably older USB21000S1) version of this and it "just works" on Mac, PC, Linux, BSD etc. This one doesn't seem to work on any of those. I'm going to assume that it is DOA and try another one. Otherwise, I'll be searching for the older unit.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost plug and play

Pros: I bought this for friend's computer (HP) that the NIC stopped working (built in on motherboard) It worked right away. Loaded the software, restarted the computer, plugged it in while it was re-starting.
No problems on Win7 64-bit system.
From a cable modem speeds are 25 Mbps download 10Mbps Up
Fast, silent, no bugs.
Ordered Saturday Night, installed Thursday afternoon.
Fast Shipping - Newegg Rocks!

Cons: Still had to restart the computer. Not USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: Cable is long enough to get it out of the way of other components, but not long enough to bring it to the front of the PC where it is visible.
