5 out of 5 eggsAXIS Chipset

Pros: Following the driver information provided on the startech website, it seems to be an axis chipset wich works fine either on mac and windows.

Cons: Havent tryed it yet.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: This USB to NIC works pretty well. It installed very easily and I've had no problem with it. My NIC port on my laptop was a little loose and was intermittent if I didn't watch the connection closely. This was a quick and easy fix for me to get a few more years from my laptop. I work with megapixel video cameras (sometimes up to 30+ at once) and it appears to handle that type of traffic just fine (probably better than my processor).

Cons: None, other than that a USB plug is probably a little more likely to fall out than a NIC card... but it has been easy for me to work with. I just keep it on the end of my patch cable as a matter of fact.

Other Thoughts: StarTech is a vendor I really like. I seldom have a problem with their products.

3 out of 5 eggsOk product

Pros: Works well, even with Linux.

Cons: Has trouble "clicking" with some Ethernet cord ends that work just find in all the routers, switches, and computers I have. This makes the cord fall out very easily and can be quite frustrating.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with Surface Pro/ Windows 8.1 Pro

Pros: Picked this up for my "tech tool bag". It is a great addition to the Surface Pro. Full 1.0Gbps speeds and did not need to install any drivers. Windows picked it up right away and I plugged in a cable and was online.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If you need Ethernet capability for the Surface Pro, this is a better route to go. The Official Microsoft adapter is not 1Gbps.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great Win 8 / Surface Pro

Pros: Plug and play, literally
Very fast

Cons: None that I've seen

Other Thoughts: Back about 6 months ago I bought a Surface Pro (Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro Tablet) which sadly doesn't have internal Ethernet. As an IT guy, I spend a lot of time supporting other people's networks and needed a way of quickly connecting for tasks like testing, router configuration and troubleshooting.

I bought this adapter the same week as my Surface, and I have been extremely pleased with it. It worked "plug and play" right out of the box, which caught me off guard as I had the typical expectation that I would need to spend some time driver hunting (I never use the 3-year-old disk that comes with any new component).

I plugged it in, Windows installed the driver (which was clearly included in the OS) and I'm getting 80-90MBytes/sec consistently on large file transfers. It "just works". It's small and convenient to carry around in a small accessory pouch along with power adapters, short network cables and the like.

I have not yet tried this on a Mac(book Pro) so I can't speak to Mac compatibility, but I will post an updated review once I've tried it.

For me, this has been a great adapter and one I'd recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsGood with correct drivers.

Pros: Works, but only with the correct driver! See "Other Thoughts"

Cons: Eh, took some work to get it to function normally.

Other Thoughts: This USB adapter (USB31000S) would constantly drop packets and not load web pages when using drivers from StarTech's website both on Windows 7 32bit and Linux Mint 15 32bit. Went to the actual chipset manufacturer to get the drivers and it worked perfectly on Windows 7 after that, haven’t had a chance to test on Linux yet. Search for AX88179 on asix.com.tw under Support > Download > Drivers and let your troubles be over.

5 out of 5 eggsTen Times Faster!

Pros: Easy installation. My backups to a NAS took hours. Now they take 30 minutes!

Cons: Does not seem to work with Linux. Had to remove this product to use Linux. However, I have not really looked for a Linux driver or spent any time to get it to work with Linux. So, I still gave it 5 stars.

1 out of 5 eggsDOES NOT WORK ON MAC OS X

Pros: provides GigE speeds

Cons: running on a new Mac Air Mid-2012 - and whenever you plug in any other USB device, the Ethernet goes down. With a system restart it comes back (with the new plugged in device).
StarTech's tech support had no clue and left me hanging. Can't use the device and will be returning for a refund.
