5 out of 5 eggsPlays nice with Linux

Pros: I needed a PCI wireless card for an older Dell desktop that I was going to re-purpose, and finding a PCI card (not PCI Express) wireless adapter proved challenging. As this was also a SFF case, I needed not just PCI, but a PCI card with a SFF bracket. This one fit the bill. Card was recognized by Linux (Mint 17.1) and worked right out of the box!! I'm getting a steady 60-75% signal and my PC is situated in a weird corner away from router - no issues with connecting.

Cons: None so far ...

Other Thoughts: Needed a PCI card with a SFF adapter, that plays nicely with Linux and this one was IT. Overall, this is a decent card if you just plan on using the standard 2.4ghz band.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's OK

Pros: For the money, it's decent. I got mine for 25 dollars. The speed it offers is pretty good. The adjustable external antennas really help it out. This is a decent wireless card, and finding PCI cards (not PCI Express) are getting harder to find. This one is fully compatible with Windows 8. Just install the driver, shut it down, open up your case, put in the wireless card, close up your case, and it's ready to go. You can choose to install the Ralink Utility or not, so it's not forced upon you like some other adapters do.

The Ralink Utility itself isn't bad. But without it, you can be online the moment you boot up. With the utility on, it causes a hiccup the moment you log on, so you have to wait 1-2 minutes before going online. It also hogs up resources, but not much. Overall it's not so bad. I guess it helps with connectivity? I dunno. Maybe it's just there for people who don't know what to do.

Overall, this is a very decent card if you just plan on using the standard 2.4ghz band.

Cons: Here's the not so great part... Since it has adjustable antennas, it might not be too great with certain routers. For example, if the back of your computer is facing the router, you will get a nice 4-5 bars, even through 3 walls, a ceiling, and over 40 feet! But if you turn your computer with the side facing the router, it instantly drops to 2-3 no matter what you do; sometimes lucky enough to get 4. It doesn't hurt speed much, but it could be annoying since dipping down to 2 bar midgame means lag spikes.

Another issue is this adapter really likes to mess up sometimes. Sometimes it just stops working properly, although everything else is fine. Even worse, it decides to drop down to 1mbps and stay there until you uninstall the drivers, remove the card, reinstall the drivers, put the card back in, and try it again. That is VERY tedious. I had to do it 3 times to finally get it to work, and surprise, it's back to 1mbps after a few days. I think it's finally burnt out, despite me only having it since December.

Another con is that it's a signal hogger. For example, if your computer is closer to the router and directly past it, in another room, is a wireless device like a DVR/Netflix/Roku box, this little puppy will soak up everything. There's no way to bottleneck it either. Even with extra alotted mbps (450mbps max), it can severely block signals to other things.

Other Thoughts: So basically, just get this card if you're ONLY using it for your computer and don't have any wireless devices further than your computer. Also pray it doesn't drop down to 1mbps for no reason, because you may as well just throw out this card and get another brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on our PCI300WN2X2 network adapter. We're sorry to hear the adapter is not working as intended and we would like to help.

First, please ensure you are using the latest driver package as found on our website. You can find the drivers and installation procedure on the following page:

This device operates on the 2.4GHz transmission band and includes some built-in features to mitigate radio-frequency interference. However, excessive interference can negatively affect the unit's connection to the access point. This can result in a drop in connection quality, or complete connection loss in extreme cases.

Common sources of 2.4Ghz interference can include other Wi-Fi or wireless devices, cordless phones, microwave ovens, and others. USB 3.0 devices and cables can also sometimes interfere with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi devices due to the electronic noise they emit while operating.

In order to provide a more consistent connection, please also ensure that both antennae on the device (as well as the antenna on your access point, if applicable) are pointed upward. If available, can you also try a different PCI slot to see if results vary?

Finally, please ensure that your operating system is up to date with any necessary patches or service packs.

We're always here to help with our lifetime technical support. The preceding instructions are a good starting point, but if they did not resolve your issue, please feel free to contact us at any time for further assistance using case number 303-214716.

You can also respond here and we will be sure to follow up!

5 out of 5 eggsPCI 300Mbps WI-Fi card that works with Windows 8.1!

Pros: If you have a PCI slot and would rather use it over PCIe slots, or if you don't have any PCIe slots anyway and need a wireless N wi-fi card for the newest versions of windows this is probably your best bet for the money.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Ubuntu

Pros: After discovering 1 PCI slot was bad on my MB, Ubuntu picked it up automatically. Works just fine.
I have it in a remote part of the house and I'm using an antenna extension cable to get out to where signal is better.
Does a good job.

Cons: none really
