4 out of 5 eggsGreat Features - Asus Tech Support Lacking

Pros: Price
VPN
Featureset precludes necessity third party firmware
DDNS free through asus
Did I mention Featureset?

Cons: Asus tech support

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to the latest firmware as soon as I got this unit. I was impressed with the features especially the VPN. I set that up and connected with my iPhone no prob! You also get a free account with Asus's DDNS service which was great.
Unfortunately, the router kept wanting to change my username and/or password - I'd have to reset it which made we have to set the entire router up each time.
I called Asus to get help and try suggested installing firmware again using rescue mode. I did that and router would not get out if rescue mode. The second tech support person I spoke with was extremely rude, somewhat combative, and argumentative. I have no clue why as I was polite as could be. Perhaps he was just a natural jerk or maybe he was having a bad day but his attitude was unacceptable and uncalled for. Left a bad taste in my mouth for Asus products.

As long as you don't need to call tech support, this would be an awesome router!

1 out of 5 eggsDead after a year

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap. Died after a year.

Other Thoughts: Get a Netgear. We use them at work and they rarely fail. Worth the extra bucks. It'll save you money in the long run.

3 out of 5 eggsFails under load

Pros: cheap & durable in harsh environments (crawlspace/attic)

Cons: These fail under a heavy load. I bought three of these, one for management and two for iSCSI. Testing iSCSI I was getting throughput of around 70MB/s. On the management side while on IPsec VPN, I was continually getting disconnects. Power cycling the switch helped, but the problem returned shortly thereafter. Replacing the switch with a spare 10/100 fixed the problem.

Other Thoughts: These are great if you just need to add more ports or for testing things, but don't use them for anything you'd consider mission critical.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the money

Pros: GigE, small, simple

Cons: None that I can find

Other Thoughts: I havent had the trouble that a few of the other reviewers have had. Other than a few power outages in the building, the device has been constantly powered, and has never dropped a connection. Great switch at a great cost.

1 out of 5 eggsFails under load

Pros: It's a gigabit switch

Cons: When doing sustained transfers of large amounts of data (hundreds of gigabytes), the switch drops all network connections (all link lights go dark) and will not work until power cycled. The area where I have it is well ventilated, so heat should not be in issue unless the device has inadequate cooling.

I can't recommend a switch that randomly stops switching.

5 out of 5 eggsNice budget Gig switch

Pros: Small form factor, doesn't light up like a Christmas tree and illuminate your entire office. Works perfectly, no issues so far. Very inexpensive for a device with a 10gbps backplane.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Perfect for home or small office.

4 out of 5 eggs2nd chance

Pros: First one of these I bought works like a charm. It was cheap but has worked perfect.

Tech support answered all my questions.

Cons: I bought a second one and it was defective out of the box. It powered on but No link lights. I'm getting a rplacement sent to me. Since the first one works so good, I'm giving them another chance.

Other Thoughts: Defects happen.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, works

Pros: Works fine, plug and play, auto crossover means no fuss.

Cons: Single, 1-color LED per port shows activity only, no indication of speed, duplex, etc.

Other Thoughts: If, like me, you're looking for something cheap to share one ethernet connection between several devices in your home entertainment system (game console, HTPC, BD ...), look no further.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid little switch

Pros: Solid product. Works as needed for home theater system. Runs cool, LEDs are easy to ready but don't light up the cabinet that I placed them (older switch put on a light show). Just a solid, affordable Gigabit switch.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I will try LevelOne products in the future.
