4 out of 5 eggsSo far, pretty good

Pros: Low cost and effective. It is a little hard to configure (not for the faint of heart) but there are tons of youtube videos, resources and blogs about this firewall. I got 2, one for home and one for a clients office, and so far both are working well.

Cons: Keep in mind, a year subscription to CISCO SmartNet is advised. The newer IOS is recommended for all the features that make this firewall shine, and you can't get that without SmartNet. The good news is, even the smartnet sub is only about 10%-15% of the cost of the item. (so an extra hundred bucks or so)

Other Thoughts: To quote one of my favorite games:
"To the untrained, this beast is a junker. to the trained, this junker's a beast"

People tend to associate cheap with ineffective. Not so much in this case. If you know what you're doing, then the ASA can shine bright and do great things.

2 out of 5 eggsHardware = Good, Software = FAIL !

Pros: Generally speaking Cisco hardware is good. I've used their PIX 501 router/firewall and the ASA 5505 which is the replacement for the PIX 501 with additional features. Reliability has been good.

Cons: Cisco's GUI software (ASDM) is so defective as to be unusable for most customers. The only way you might get it to function is if you install an old Java version such as Java 6 update 27 with IE V6-V10. Cisco's ASDM software will NOT work with IE11 or IE9 (server edition). It also will not work with Java 7 without creating and installing security certificates, etc. or with Java 8 - the current version of Java.

See the Cisco link for the many problems attempting to use ASDM software because it will drive you mad trying to use the software or find this information which is NOT included in any of the installation documents included with the appliance or the online install documents.

Other Thoughts: I would NOT recommend Cisco hardware to most people as it's a real hassle to install and maintain and Cisco's fees for licenses and support, (even for defective products) is absurd.

Cisco's failure to provide proper 21st century GUI software to configure their hardware appears to be costing them dearly according to their 10Q reports. That and their fees for licenses and support (because their software fails to operate) are outrageous. There is absolutely no reason why anyone should be forced to use archaic CLI to configure and maintain Cisco hardware. It's a disgrace IMO, in addition to being a PITA requiring other software and cables to configure the hardware because Cisco doesn't know how to write proper software.

If in doubt check the Cisco website Support area to see the issues for yourself.

1 out of 5 eggsNot supported by Cisco

Pros: Our first one, worked well. This one was backup, which we ended up needing one day. That is when things went badly.

Cons: Registered with Cisco. Would not connect to internet but internal networking possible. Contacted Cisco for support. They refused to help because, according to Cisco, Newegg is supposed to sell a support package with this item and Newegg did not send us a support package. Not sure we can return this defective product.

Other Thoughts: Cisco software for setting up VPN a nightmare, even for our IT tech. We bought a different non-Cisco product and the VPN was up in no time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product.

Pros: Its cisco.
Very stable.
Well made.
Reliable. Install and forget.
ASDM has improved alot. I am a CLI guy but i love this new version.
VPN setup is easy.
Great Cisco community support.

Cons: Only 2 SSl VPN licences, i wish Cisco gave more.
Cost, but you get what you pay for. Quality!!!
Have to use websense web filter if you want to filter web content. Used Untagle instead.
DMZ limits. Not very flexible.

Other Thoughts: I have installed 4 of this on various sites (3 are 10 users and 1 has 50 user licenses). The 10 user license is cheaper but I would recommend this one to cover growth (trust me i learned this the hard way).If you exceed your license limit the device will drop hosts randomly and it’s a pain to trouble shoot if you overlook the license limit. The device is very stable ,site to site VPN is always up. The speed is great and the ASDM has greatly improved from the days of the PIX 501 SDM. Watch the power connector, it’s very delicate and it can be broken if not handle carefully (i broke one and got a replacement from "that aution site E").

5 out of 5 eggsCisco and Newegg Are The Best

Pros: This Cisco security appliance (firewall) model is well made and fully featured to meet the needs of most small and medium business users. It can be made operational with minimal changes to the default and auto-detect options. My unit came with the most recent firmware (8.3) installed which was helpful.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As usual, Newegg gets their products delivered fast and offers great prices.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and Steady

Pros: Best bang for your money spent! did everything i wanted it to. Bought 2 of them for security and Site to Site. Would get one for home as well for next router there.

Cons: did take a bit to set up, but wasn't anything someone looking for this shouldn't be able to handle.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for small offices.

Pros: I have installed several of these for clients. Will do almost everything the larger ASAs will, just smaller.

Cisco recently released a beta version of the 64bit client for Windows 7 and Vista (not XP64) that can be downloaded within the first 90 days support and after if you have smartnet.

Cons: Not for the inexperienced. Has basic NAT configured so you can "just plug it in" and get internet, but if that is all you are doing you are wasting your money.

The only con is the difficulty in configuration, but that is ONLY because this is a very advanced device.

Other Thoughts: Someone mentioned VLANs. You can unlock the full 20 VLAN capability and full firewall rules for any direction traffic between any VLAN with the "Security Plus" license upgrade, but it is not cheap...

5 out of 5 eggsNice Box

Pros: Same feature set as the higher end 5510 ($2K) but just smaller -> beats any small VPN endpoint in its class/price range.
VPN end support via client or client less VPN (IPSec, SSL, L2TP, etc).
Has two PoE interfaces.
Plenty of room in the FLASH-> can store every IOSs & ASDMs Cisco has ever released on the platform
Can be used as VPN endpoint or VPN server

Cons: No native Cisco 64 bit client, but there are several OPEN 3rd party VPN clients that work. I have found one that is free and have been using without issue for several months.

Do need a good amount of networking experience and or knowledge to configure or really leverage.

Other Thoughts: There is a small "cisco" premium that you are paying for this device (vs retail/box store gear) but it is rock solid.
