2 out of 5 eggsNot for small businesses

Pros: Said to be highly reliable.

Cons: Cisco's business model seems focused on very large companies. One does not simply download, for instance, client software. First you must have what amounts to a service contract and then you are allowed to buy disks. It also requires a laptop with an RS232 port for setup. In this day and age? You've got to be kidding me.

Other Thoughts: There are many great VPN solutions available from providers who offer responsive solutions to their customers' needs. We've bought our last Cisco product.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome device

Pros: Huge throughput capabilities. Seamless Site-To-Site/Lan2Lan integration. Firewall is very powerful.

Cons: Does not do any type of QoS. Static routes are a bit finicky if placed in your DMZ. ASDM can be a little quirky (Although 6.15(51) is alot better). Has a nasty bug where if a Phase 1 IKE packet gets lost, device will get stuck in WAITMSG3 indefinately. Happens pretty rarely, but it can be a problem on a large network.

Requires a high degree of IPSec/IKE knowledge to manage effectively.

Remote hardware diagnostics is non-existant. Requires a tech in place to go into ROMMON mode to check for hardware faults.

Other Thoughts: I highly suggest setting up SSH on the outside interface for those times when the tunnel refuses to build properly. Also, having a Compact Flash with some backup configs on it in the device has proven invaluable.

5 out of 5 eggsa must have

Pros: this is a must have for any n, tears down all data and voice packets and inspects and rebuilds accordingly. this unit is fast and has expansion slot if needed. vpn works great also. has great diagnostic capabilites, ACL's, DMZ, IPSEC, SSH, SSL.... ect.

Cons: pricey but worth it

Other Thoughts: would like to see better VoIP packet inspection and translation
