Nice so far
- Pros: It's Cisco.
- Cons: It's expensive.
- Other Thoughts: I haven't gotten into much of the more advanced configuration on the router and am certainly not an expert on Cisco equipment. I’m writing this review for the folks that have never worked with Cisco products and are wondering if they will be able to get this router functioning- the answer is yes! I had zero Cisco experience and things are working like a charm. I have a pretty basic home setup and felt this router was a great product to help me cut my teeth on Cisco IOS without anybody watching over me. It took about five hours to replicate my settings from my previous router… no guidebooks, just google.
Great for a secure small office
- Pros: Good wireless power, expandable memory capabilities, multiple vlan support with 4 port managed switch. Has more features than most will know what to do with.
- Cons: Bit of a learning curve and might be difficult for beginners to get full use out of it even with the configuration wizards. However, once you learn Cisco IOS it'll be good for most of the Cisco line.
- Other Thoughts: If you have simple requirements and don't need multiple vlans or many firewall rules you can get the 857 but the 877 is best for complex configurations, multiple subnets, or VPN with an ADSL connection.
128MB Dram is enough for most applications unless you have a huge number of firewall rules. 24MB of flash isn't enough to load all of the VPN or full configuration software; you'll want at least another 8MB of flash for that. Look on a certain online auction site which shall not be named for 3rd party memory expansions (MEM870) since Newegg doesn't carry these.
