Typical Cisco - Rock Solid
- Pros: Stable operation (no monthly reboots), sleek new low profile, excellent wireless a/b/g range, Guest SSID cabability, seamless integraton into Mixed ASA/PIX IpSec VPN environment.
I believe this to be the best value for SOHO Cisco security.
- Cons: This isn't really a con, but if you do not know the Cisco IOS or you do not have a patient and intuitive nature, you will be better served by a SOHO web interface driven device. I would not use the WebUI to configure this device.
- Pros: Nice entry level Cisco Router
IOS Wireless - multi-SSID (a/b/g) ACL Stable - set it and forget it!
- Cons: *
Great router for those who know how to use it
- Pros: Very powerful and flexible capabilities. I used this router to setup a DHCP pool and static IP pool where the DHCP pool had no Internet access and the static pool did. The static pool were assigned addresses via DHCP and manual bindings. Then I used ACL's to only allow Internet access for those allowed. Netflow was used to monitor bandwidth usage by client IP address.
- Cons: This is difficult to use if you know know or aren't confident that you can learn IOS. IOS is command line. Don't rely on the GUI. It might work for you, but don't count on it.
I had issues with the reset button, where it would not reset to default. I had to connect with serial port, which luckily 1 out of 140 people with us in Iraq had a laptop with a serial port. Cisco did not supply a usb to serial adapter. Got it working, but it was a pain. Support is also difficult if you don't buy it. I ended up getting support but it was a pain to get it.
- Other Thoughts: For real network users, this is for you. For the light network users, stick to dlink and linksys.
