1 out of 5 eggsPure junk, already in the trash can

Pros: Ports on the back

Cons: 10% hit in performance over other switches, buggy ui that frequently cannot display page, had to power cycle it every few days as it would slow to a crawl and then lock up, bad firmware with udp flaw that kills linux nfs and network printing, lastly I hit the reset button on the side and it bricked. No, I did not flash it, no power hits, I simply used the reset button on the side to clear a config and it never came back. All it does now is have a blinking system light. I'm a tier 3 IT tech so I know my way around a switch and this thing was horrid until it died after less than six months. To top it off their support is garbage, they claim the switch couldn't brick from a reset and that I did a bad firmware flash, that's simply not true and the firmware was never upgraded on this unit. They voided the warranty and sent me on my way.

Other Thoughts: I also had a unmanaged 5 port cisco switch died after only 3 weeks. After the issues with this managed switch I didn't bother Rma. I rounded up all the cisco junk I had and tossed what I couldn't return since clearly this junk and ismnot reliable enough for my network. I don't know what happened to cisco, but their newer products are trash and their customer service isn't much better. I moved over to hp procurve units several months ago and have not had a single issue since. I'm done with cisco primarily due to this switch and the money lost here.

3 out of 5 eggs-08 only supports some SG200 features

Pros: Nice little switch with a web GUI interface. Lots of good features in a compact metal case. Locking tab on the external power supply lead for a secure fit.

Cons: The -08 does NOT support SNMP, CDP, or many other features that the larger SG200 series support. It runs a limited 1.0.x software version, and can not be upgraded to the 1.3 that the bigger switches use. I'm a bit peeved by this, as the Cisco documentation does not call this out.
Also, the power lead, while secure, is oddly placed. It sticks out the side of the switch, taking up a good 2" of extra space wherever you place it. Really detracts from its otherwise nice form factor.
No secure protocols either. Plain HTTP only.

Other Thoughts: Should have bought an SG300, or something else.

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost as advertised

Pros: So far the switch has been working very smoothly for me - almost as advertised. This switch is definitely a very solid piece of networking hardware, which has been serving my needs quite well.

Cons: I discovered a couple of things that were not clear to me at the time of purchase. First, this switch does not support Energy Efficient Ethernet. Apparently, every other switch in SG200 series supports Energy Efficient Ethernet, with the two exceptions: SG200-08 and SG200-08P. Second, it is impossible to disable PoE feature in the switch SG200-08P through its web-interface. I picked a "Smart" switch over "Unmanaged" switch to be able to turn PoE functionality on and off on different ports. I observe that if I connect switch SG200-08 to port #4 of the switch SG200-08P, the latter provides power to the former regardless of whether PoE on port 4 is disabled. This does look like a firmware bug, but this also raises the question what other configuration options are hardwired and how different the smart switch is from an unmanaged switch (in Cisco implementation).

1 out of 5 eggsTotal Worthless Junk when playing with others

Pros: Works when used alone.

Cons: Expensive paper weight
Does not like other switches
Connecting a dumb switch to this gives significant degraded throughput of both UDP and TCP traffic.
Becomes unusable on your network.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 1G ports, 4 PoE ports. I needed more ports for my 1G to the desktop network so I must have 1G ports on all network devices and run all cat 6 cables .. the four PoE ports may be useful sometime too.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I default cisco for network devices.

5 out of 5 eggsSeamless

Pros: Plug and Play, Seamless operation, Great on-screen management interface, Full power PoE, Accurate status lights on front panel, solidly built.

Cons: Power cable comes out of right side instead of the back. That limits what kind of shelf arrangement you can put it in. It's in the way and cumbersome.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to run some PoE surveillance cameras and it worked flawlessly, instantly, and perfectly the minute I plugged it in and booted it up. It reboots in case of a power failure or after maintenance in about a minute and reconnects perfectly every time. I expect a network switch to be "invisible" and this one is. But, if you have to tweak its operation to a custom configuration, the on screen interface allows this "managed" switch to be customized in hundreds of parameters. Highly recommended. Yes, only 4 ports are PoE, but they deliver lots of power.

4 out of 5 eggsJust keep in mind....

Pros: It's Cisco...

Cons: It's NOT mentioned in the description, but only 4 ports out of the 8 are PoE.
