5 out of 5 eggsAwesome AP

Pros: Bought a few of these access points and paired them up with the Cisco ASA5505 to provide wifi for the whole 3000sqft building. They work perfectly w/out any issue and signal strength exceeded my expectaion!

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I'd buy again in a heart beat

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Access Point

Pros: I have purchased over 60+ of these access points over the last year now, and they have all been great. The ease of installation and configuration is a definite plus. The range of these units is surprising. I do not use any special software or controller to configure them; I have a configuration text file that I use to configure the access points individually. And in response to the guy that gave this unit a single egg, they should know better than buying something they knew nothing about, which is obvious from their review. They may be an expert software programmer and have been building computers for 20 years, but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to enterprise network hardware. All they had to do was lookup the manual for this product, and they would have found out how to configure this. Now, figuring out how to configure this properly is another thing, one that took me a little while.

Personally, I tried using the web interface initially to configure the access point, but it drove me mad. Way too slow. Now it takes me seconds using the CLI. Wall mounting the access point takes much longer!

Cons: As previously noted by other reviewers, this does not come with a power adapter. In order to make this work, you will either need to purchase a separate power adapter, or provide power over the network (POE) using either an injector or a switch that has POE ports. This does conform to standard POE specs.

4 out of 5 eggsBe Careful.

Pros: If you know your Cisco gear this is a great buy, but I have a few caveats for those thinking of purchasing this.

*Enterprise class device* - Cisco's current model is to have a router in the closet capable of providing power over ethernet, as well as management functions, because when you have a large corporate setting it's WAY easier to configure the main router, then just walk around the building plugging a few of these in and having them auto-configure. This means you're going to need a POE capable router or you'll need to buy a separate power adapter, and you're going to need to change it over to an ad-hoc mode in the config before it's going to work for you. If you don't know what any of this means, you're looking at the wrong product.

The web interface is quite a bit easier to use for config purposes than the IOS shell, unless you're a Cisco master I suggest sticking to that interface, but once again, if you're squeamish about Cisco IOS you're likely looking at the wrong product, what you want is the Cisco LINKSYS wireless router.

Cons: ONLY Cisco would think to sell a device by the model "AP-1041N" and an ALMOST identical device "LAP-1041N" thats main differentiating factor is the LAP model has no firmware and WILL NOT work without a host router period. Way to go Cisco.

Otherwise, solidly built, only ever encountered a problem with one ever, and it's only problem was that Mac Airs would bounce, and because the client bought it from a disreputable dealer Cisco refused to support it. Be wary of Cisco support, it makes Microsoft support seem good by comparison.

Other Thoughts: "Do you need to buy this product?" A simple guideline..

"Maybe" - NO
"It's be neat to have real Cisco gear" - NO
"sort of, my wireless bounces and I want to fix that" - NO
"I know CISCO IOS and am comfortable managing Cisco devices AND require an Enterprise class device for my wireless needs." - YES

It's that simple.

5 out of 5 eggsGood box.

Pros: You can use the web interface or telnet to configure the AP. For multiple AP's you simply save the config to a text file, change the IOS code with notepad and import into a second AP and boom, the second AP is configured. If you are a non-tech end-user you may have some trouble with this AP.

Cons: None that I can tell. Would like to see the web-interface a little faster but no big deal.

3 out of 5 eggsOutstanding performance.

Pros: Solid construction, POE, VLANs, multiple SSID support. Full firmware, no WLAN controller needed.

Cons: Can't get SMARTnet. Without it, one cannot get firmware updates. Called Newegg and the person on the phone didn't have any idea what SMARTnet was. Told me to call Cisco. Fail. -2 eggs

Other Thoughts: Nothing about this product is dumbed down. Stick to home-consumer-targeted products like Linksys or Netgear if you aren't comfortable with enterprise hardware.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst purchase I ever made

Pros: never got it working.

Cons: I was a software engineer for over 20 years. Embedded software specializing in hardware interfaces. I have also been putting my own PC's together for close to 20 years. I have been an admin for UNIX systems among other things. I am not a network person. I purchased this product because I was tired of the short range of all the AP's I had purchased to date. When I received I was surprised to find there was no power supply, no product documentation, and no support software. I looked up the product and found documentation that told me what power supply I needed. Spent more money on that. Then I discovered you needed control software to configure the device. I have spent about 6 hours on the Cisco web site (a lot of time for someone who used to make over $200 an hour) to find out that you need to purchase a service contract with Cisco to get the software (that should have come with the product) necessary to configure the product. Its is an ugly paper weight.

Other Thoughts: If you do not have high network expertise (including having your own controller or controller software) plan on spending more money for a power supply and a service contract with Cisco. I posted a bad review on this product when I first purchased it and to my disappointment newegg suppressed it. If they suppress this one I will question using them to purchase hardware anymore.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat AP - worth the price

Pros: Looks amazing, simple setup (remember this is enterprise Cisco, not your regular home piece of equipment), and the enterprise class features (like a local RADIUS server built in) that I wanted for my home network.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The bracket that comes with it, is a bit strange but it mounts to the wall nicely and is a classy finish to this access point. If you are looking for a piece of enterprise equipment that will hold up for a demanding home network, this is definately the way to go.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great access point. If you know IOS then you won't have any issues bringing these online. It delivers great range, high speeds and the quality you expect from a Cisco device.

Cons: No power adapter, but not a major issue.
