4 out of 5 eggsA moderate Switch for Today's technology

Pros: First, it has plenty of security features and can do quite a few things. the 8 ports are definitely helpful. However, this is where the pros end.

Cons: This unit is already a few years old and I used it for several years before realizing that it wasn't my internet that was slow, it was the unit that was cutting my bandwidth in half and literally costing me $30 each and every month for two years.

It's WAN to LAN is NOT 12.5 Mbps. That's counting BOTH ways, i believe 'full-duplex'. It's 'half duplex' is only 7.5 at MOST. I have 10 Mbps from comcast. I hooked up my desktop and laptop directly to the modem and got 12 Mbps. I added this VPN and it dropped to 4.5 Mbps.

It's a pain to setup. And I mean a pain. Took me 30 minutes the first time. the FVS 338 is a little smarter.

I highly recommend looking for the VPN FVS 338 Model. Up to 90 Mbps WAN to LAN and 60 for the 3DES service.

Other Thoughts: It's 'switching fabric' is 250 Mbps (up + down stream data x 8)

the FVS 338 is a superior model. Faster CPU, more RAM, higher switching fabric, faster throughput.

10/100 Mbps Wired Speed - 50/50.
12.5 Mbps LAN to WAN throughput - WRONG. Try 7.5. I'd know, I tested and suffered for two years with this speed with a 10 Mbps service. Switched to FVS 338 and got full speed instantly.

1 out of 5 eggsWhy is this router still being sold?

Pros: It's built solidly. I like the old Netgear blue box look. Has 8x 10/100 ethernet ports. Quiet.

Cons: Very unreliable and slow.

Does not pass through VPN (Cisco Ipsec).

Requires reboots to clear connectivity problems.

Web based management interface is HTTP only (not https!) and is very primitive.

Did I say slow?

Other Thoughts: Why is Netgear still selling this router? It may have been competitive a decade ago. There are a lot of better options out there.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful wonder router.

Pros: -This thing is rock solid. I've had it for seven years now and it's still going strong (however it isn't my primary router as of this year due to upgrading network for WiFi).
-Wonderful administration interface.

Cons: -Lost one port (port 8) after about 3 years, but all other ports work.

Other Thoughts: -I've remember that this router had a lifetime warranty when I bought it originally (2005) but that looks to have changed now according to what I see on this site now.
-You should take from this review that even though I've lost a port, I still will sing this thing praises, that's how good I feel of a product it is.
-I wish oh how I wish that they made this with WiFi or else I'd have stuck with it for my primary router.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Initial configuration is easy past that menu is horribly designed.

Cons: Started locking up every other day on a very simple network. Would come back up after rebooting at first, then no access whatsoever. RMA...days later...same thing. Garbage.

4 out of 5 eggsStable but slow

Pros: I have several of these that have been running for 7 plus years, versions 1 and 3. Easy to configure and they just keep running. The smaller switching type PSU do fail but the older big linear bricks run forever.

Cons: SLOW, started to notice they impacted the internet speed may years ago when we started to get 12Mb connections !!!
Now today they are a major speed problem, only suitable for T1, DSL and economy cable connections.

Other Thoughts: I don't deploy these anymore due to the speed issue, but it looks like I won't have to replace existing ones for a while yet.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Nightmare

Pros: I don't see any pros here

Cons: This router is horrible and the customer support was good at first but they charge $50 for an RMA to get a replacement first and quickly. This is a hardware failure and I should not have to pay them a dime. I have re-flashed latest firmware and still broken.

Other Thoughts: Our company has had this for a few months because we replaced the exact same model we had for years. The boss likes security of a VPN and firewall. But this thing does not work, well it works for a little and then slows to a crawl and needs to be rebooted (multiple times daily).

2 out of 5 eggsShockingly poor performance

Pros: It is simple to set up. Worked out of the box. NAT works perfectly and the FW features are all I could want. Alerted me of port scans being conducted. It is solidly built and looks good on my desk.

Cons: Shockingly bad throughput. I was so convinced that my internet service was bad I had the guy come out to perform diagnostics. This was because I was only getting 7.2mbps... until I plugged my workstation directly into the cable model. Only then did I get 30mbps. The FVS318V3 was not labeled anywhere for throughput. How could I have known? How could Netgear think that something this bad could sell in this day and age?

Other Thoughts: I see now that there are other variations of the Prosave VPN Firewall, but I'm so blown away that I can't bring myself to take a chance on wasting any more time on this.

1 out of 5 eggsGARBAGE

Pros: all pros outweighed by cons

Cons: Back in the day Netgear made a solid product and provided top-notch support. Now their products are terrible and their support is worthless.

Other Thoughts: I have been through many Netgear routers and WAPS recently and very quickly found many design flaws and manufacturing defects. This is utter Chinese garbage they are peddling now. Do yourself a favor and spend the money to get real routing equipment from another manufacturer.

3 out of 5 eggsOK FW, VPN is Useless

Pros: Good home FW features and intuitive interface.
It has never failed, needed to be restarted

Cons: VPN implementation is non-standard, required Netgear client SW, which is 1) expensive and b) not available for iOS devices.

It puzzles me why Netgear chose to implement VPN in this manner, besides of course selling more client licenses. Having a "VPN" capability, but not being able to securely connect to my home network on the go from an iPhone or an iPad is ridiculous.

Other Thoughts: If I new of this issue, wouldn't have bought this FW.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Easy to configure, decent amount of documentation.

Cons: Very disappointing that you have to purchase the client software separately.

Other Thoughts: Bought this mainly for the VPN capabilities and was surely disappointed to find out that the client software doesn't come with this unit. I guess i should have paid more attention to the other comments.
