5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch, but watch the rebate

Pros: This switch is fast and silent. As others have mentioned, the current revision of this switch is completely fanless. I also like the fact that it has an internal power supply. Lifetime warranty is a plus.

Cons: I submitted my rebate to Netgear and about a week later I received an email containing my rebate tracking number.

When I checked the rebate status online using the tracking number, I was surprised to see that my rebate was denied due to an 'Invalid Purchase Location'. Nice.

Newegg was clearly listed as a valid purchase location on the rebate form, and I had included my Newegg receipt in my rebate submission.

I contacted the rebate company's customer service department and the rep said that they would escalate my case to Netgear, and that I would be notified of the outcome within 7-10 business days.

A few minutes later I checked my rebate status again and it had changed to "Your rebate is valid and is scheduled for final processing." That was a fast 7-10 days :)

In the end I suspect I will receive my rebate, but I suggest that you keep an eye on yours.

5 out of 5 eggsLatest version is Fanless

Pros: Just works, Silent, internal power supply

Cons: connectivity / speed lights are all on the left side of the box - prefer when the lights are above each port like on other netgear switches

Other Thoughts: Lots of reviews of this product say it has a loud fan. The most recent version is fanless - I purchased in February 2013 - so totally silent. The marketing materials in the box have not been changed to reflect this, but the outside of the box now says fanless, and the unit is indeed silent.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Longevity

Cons: none comes to mind

Other Thoughts: I am not a network guru, for that matter not even very knowledgeable. However, I bought this to have my whole house wired to this in panel box. It has been 5 years so far and still kicking. All we use this for is internet access and NAS access. No problems with either. The internet we get about 25MBS haven't really tested NAS. We can stream 1080p content with no lag, stuttering or buffering. Overall seems to be a good unit with a good life span.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't COunt on Your Rebate

Pros: If you need the ports this is a great way to reduce the clutter of having multiple wiring hubs all over your utility closet. The rack mount brakcets worked nicely on the utility closet wall.

Cons: Pricey without the advertised rebate.

Other Thoughts: After six weeks Netgear sent me a postcard saying the purchase date on the rebate form was invalid, so I am out $40. Never take a rebate for granted.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Awesome switch, does what it's supposed to do.

Cons: A little pricey, would have been 5 eggs if it were a 48 port for this price.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA out of box

Pros: Well, hard to say. It was quiet. That is a nice change over my old FS524. 2 star rating for being quiet.

Cons: No through put. Hooked it up, appeared to be connected on the PC, but no connectivity. Tried to ping 8.8.8.8. Total packet loss. Tried to ping the modem. 75% packet loss. No internet connectivity. Could not access the modem admin page. Took the unit out, had a faint burnt odor to it. Old switch back in place, network back online.

Other Thoughts: Will have further review if I get a unit that works.

5 out of 5 eggsJust Works

Pros: Simple Plug and Play.
The lights on the front of the unit indicate if a the CAT cable is reaching 1000MB or 100MB using green or amber lights.
Little to no heat created by the unit.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Price/Performance

Pros: Outstanding price to performance. For a home environment, this switch is awesome. It is totally silent. No fan noise at all (one of my main concerns from earlier reviews). It lives right under my desk on a home made server rack, and I don't know it is there. For an un-managed switch, this might be the best product out there in this price range.

Cons: No port LED's. My previous Netgear switch (FS108) did and made it really easy to see right away what the link speed was. This switch has a flat panel next to the ports that with numbers and light up and corresponding to the ports. The color that the port light is tells you the speed.

Other Thoughts: Great switch. Couldn't be happier.

4 out of 5 eggsJust as planned

Pros: Immediately worked out of box.
Very quiet.
Simple to install.
Quite small.
Entire home on gigabit!

Cons: NETGEAR support quality

Other Thoughts: I've been utilizing this switch heavily for almost two weeks now and it's been firing away with no issues. I think I recall reading some reviews where users have had to reboot the switch on a regular basis to restore functionality. Not the case here. Zero minutes downtime so far and the speeds are fantastic, as they should be.
When attempting to register your product through NETGEAR's website be sure and exclude the "NA" at the end of the model number. After days of frustration working with NETGEAR support I was finally told this is the country code that for some reason they append directly to the end of the model number on the box. After that was straightened out I was able to register my product for support.
I would definitely recommend this product to a friend.
