Good Backbone addition
- Pros: Unit has had high reliability in a SMB/SME environment. We have 3 atm, and have just ordered our 4th. They just work, not one failure or bad port.
Have also set several of these up at client sites. They work like troopers, not one reported failure.
We use Netgear products because they are 1/5 the price of big "C"s products and work just as well in our environments. (we are also not contractually obligated to use big "C" as our vendor, so that helps :)
- Cons: None. Works as advertised.
- Other Thoughts: It appears several people are complaining about "jumbo" packet issues, or file transfer issues. Packets only transfer in so many ways, by only so many methods. If your network is experiencing slowdown or slow file transfers, 95% of the time it is going to be a software problem, not your switch.
about 4.5% of the problem will most likely sit with you (the user/admin/whomever) having missed a setting somewhere, or having a poor network infrastructure design causing the issue. OS issues (Vista file transfers...HA!), NIC settings, DNS or DHCP configurations, multiple OSes in your environment, NAS boxes, External HDDs, etc. they all communicate in slightly different ways and any one can cause issues. If you do not setup any given component properly, or you mess with settings you are not familiar with, you very well may get it to transfer your data, but you will have issues, guaranteed.
Ok switch for home use
- Pros: Good speed for the price. Easy to setup and use, small footprint, rack mountable
- Cons: Has some trouble talking between different types of connections. plugging a 100 meg switch into it could give you severe packet loss to the point of loss in connection. Packet loss when the switch gets busy too
- Other Thoughts: This is a good switch for the price, great for home use but I would not suggest it for the corporate enviroment

Great Switch
- Pros: Great Price. This switch works wonderfully, using 13/24 ports in a wired large household + home business environment. Switch is operating at gigabit speeds with no hiccups in throughput under a variety of environments.
(internet + computer2computer large file transfer, gaming + transfer, multiple transfers between various computers, etc)
- Cons: Fan is a bit on the loud side, but not so much a con so much that I know that my investment is safe.
I've had a fanless 8 port netgear switch which died after a couple years but netgear was very gracious in standing behind their product and shipped me a brand new model, even though the one i bought was technically not under warranty.
- Other Thoughts: Much less expensive than other 'C'ompany's switches. Netgear has top notch product support and will stand behind their product and ship out replacements should you ever experience a hardware failure.
Great Switch
- Pros: - Fast : 18 PC LAN ran flawlessly on this
- Stays cool as far as I can tell - Mounting Brackets can be rotated to use in other mounting situations, not just on a rack. I have mine mounted to my basement ceiling rafters now, with my firewall sitting on top of it.
- Cons: - Fan noise. This switch is not intended to be in or near a room of regular use. Can't complain about this to much its prolonging the life of the product and doing its job, but they could have invested in a quieter fan, or in a temperature controlled one. I do have it mounted near my desk, but its really no louder then my Antec case, an I only notice the noise now when its not there.
- Other Thoughts: This switch is covered by Netgear's ProSafe Lifetime Warranty: This means that as long as a customer owns its ProSafe equipment and can show original proof of purchase, NETGEAR will replace it if it breaks. Which is very nice IMO. I've had this thing almost running non-stop since I got it 5 months ago, its never hiccuped or needed to be rebooted for any reason. So far a very great product and would suggest it to anyone, and even purchase a 2nd if the need arises.
My LAN attenders raved over the increased network speeds this year over last as well. Very good investment.
JGS524 ProSafe 24 Port Gigabit Rackmount Switch
- Pros: Very easy to setup which is the way it should be. Simpy plug in the power and connect to an existing network. So far we're using about a dozen of the ports with a moderate level of traffic and the performance has been great.
- Cons: fan is NOISY, way too NOISY. If NETGEAR can't fix the fan, I would look at other models.

Highlights
 |
Gigabit Network Connectivity The Netgear JGS524 integrates 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet technology that provides a tenfold increase over 100M Fast Ethernet and a hundredfold increase over 10M Ethernet, to raise the speed and performance threshold for a converged network.
|
 |
Half/full-duplex Support With full-duplex support, the Netgear JGS524 works at a maximum 2000Mbps on each port (doubling the speed of normal half-duplex devices), and is also compatible with half-duplex mode.
|
 |
24 Auto-Sensing Ports The Netgear JGS524 features 24 RJ45 ports with automatic speed and duplex sensing capability, so you can easily combine 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000Mbps devices, running at either half or full duplex mode.
|
 |
Compact Design The Netgear JGS524 comes in a compact size for desktop use or for mounting in a standard 19-inch rack.
