Great mid level gigabit switch

white Reviewed By: rodneyaz on 7/27/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The price was right for the features it has. The CLI has a little bit of a learning curve coming from cisco, but I found it to be somewhat similar and much easier to comprehend than the web interface. The gigabit cisco switches were just way too expensive for our application. (The real cisco switches, not the linksys disquised as a cisco switches)
Cons: The web interface was REALLY confusing to me. It's not very intuitive at all.
Other Thoughts: RT*M :)

Nice switch - terrible support

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Documentation is on a CD but is very extensive. It'll keep you busy for a few days reading it all. Also, includesd a quickstart setup sheet that had me up and running pretty quick. I would advise assigning these a static ip which is pretty easy to do with hyperterminal. The web interface is easy to use and pretty extensive. Port locations alternate up and down instead of 1-12 on one row and 13-24 on next which worked out better for me. Once I got into the web interface, I was impressed at the reports I could pull and all the other functions available. You definitely get your money's worth.
Cons: Tech support. After I installed and hooked up the switches (3 stacked) I started getting complaints that the network was running slow. I noticed that one switch was generating collisions so I put the old switches on line and everything was fine. I called tech support and talked to David who told me I had to download the latest firmware but I found out later that the switches had the latest firmware installed. That was his only offer of a solution, like he just wanted to get rid of me. That's when I went in and assigned static ip addresses, restarted each of the switches and voila - the switches worked like they were supposed to. Too bad the tech wasn't smart enough or interested to help out enough to offer other suggestions so I didn't have to waste my time troubleshooting. I used to be a phone tech and really tried for a first time resolution on each call and was really tempted to return these 3 and cancel the 4th one I just bought from NewEgg.
Other Thoughts: Newegg is great and I'll continue considering them for business purchases. Also, if you do get one of these switches, don't forget the gigabit NIC's. I say that because I forgot about a couple machines that had the 10/100 cards and there was a noticable difference when I replaced the cards

Pros: Compared to a Netgear GS748TS
MUCH quieter ! ! !
Web interface is much faster
Slightly better status LEDs
Seb interface offers better statistics summary (good for spotting errors at a glance that might mean bad cabling or some such).
Cons: Setup not quite as easy as some other switches (or maybe I was just confused at the start).
Other Thoughts: We haven't used many any of the advanced features.
