4 out of 5 eggsGood soho Firewall

Pros: I installed this at my parents house to use as a DHCP server and obviously a firewall. This item gets the job done without a lot of fluff. I haven't had any problems with the unit crashing or anything like that and it has been installed for over 2 years so far. Easy to setup, and best of all its cheap. Perfect for the home. I like the sturdy metal casing too.

Cons: Need to buy licenses for the VPN, I have no need for the vpn so I didn't bother setting it up or trying.

Other Thoughts: All in all a good product for the home, don't know if I would use it for a business though.

3 out of 5 eggsUnit works, software too expensive

Pros: Cheap and complete firewall. Settings are easy and simple, and the wizard is generally unobtrusive for those of us who've set up routing equipment before and know our way around.

I have not yet seen any of the connection drops noted in other reviews (firmware 1.15 was just updated onto the unit), but I have noticed a relatively slow packet passthrough rate (I guess for $60 you can't expect much from Cisco).

This application is a small business with a 3Mb DSL, perfect for this unit and exactly what the unit is advertised to handle.

Cons: VPN software costs about as much as the unit PER USER LICENSE ($44.99 from Netgear), making the VPN features of this unit basically useless.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if it will work with other vendors' VPN clients and/or free VPN clients, since it does support AES and 3DES. I hope so!

1 out of 5 eggsThe worst brick of them all

Pros: None. Worst SOHO firewall in existence.

Cons: The firmware is broken out of the box. It took Netgear more than a year to fix some of the issues with dropping packets.

SLOW! Connections through this firewall are horrendously slow.

VPN is useless unless you *BUY* the additional netgear proprietary VPN software.

Other Thoughts: No redeeming qualities. Not even compatible with third party firmware. If you want to give netgear your money and get nothing in return, then do it directly and just mail them a check.

5 out of 5 eggsPeople that dont look @ specs

Pros: This thing works just the way it was designed. If people buying electronics read the specs they would of realized, it only has 11.5Mbps from the public/internet to private/LAN throughput. I get 20Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up, just downloading would lock it up. But this product is fantastic after you get the firmware update. Try and find another @ this cost for what it does.

Cons: People w/little knowledge or just to much time on their hands that they can write a review but not check the specs.

Other Thoughts: For those out there that complain about firmware updates, obviously things need updates, this day in AGE. A hundred years ago you couldnt sell someone something if it was not going to last their life time, that was then, and updates on devices is now and the future. And cell phone gets updates in the background, daily. Boy i love technology.

5 out of 5 eggsUPDATE FIRMWARE

Pros: People who do not attempt to update the firmware now should not complain about lockups. The newly released 1.1_15 firmware seems to solve all issues with this thing locking up on high traffic!

I posted a review before (see posts below), and the router has now been running steadily for over 6000 hours with no problems at all.

After the firmware upgrade, no complaints at all. This little thing has been running for over 6000 hours with heavy LAN traffic and constant internet use on a network hosting over 150 clients. Seems alright to me..

Cons: Only con is that if you don't upgrade the firmware to the current version, you WILL face issues with this. When this product shipped to me it had v1.1_10 on it which was unstable and it did lock up on me more than once. I upgraded the firmware and it's alright now.
I suppose having to do the work of updating it could be considered a con, but shouldn't people be doing this anyway?

Other Thoughts: I talked to Netgear support back when the firmware was causing problems and they told me that this router is NOT meant for high traffic usage (which is why it was crashing on so many people), but they now have a fix for it anyway..

If you're a home user or have a fairly small office, I would definitely recommend this router.
If you have a larger office, it's probably best to go with a router a few steps up in the product line... but now that they have firmware that supports high traffic, there shouldn't be too much of an issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: None

Cons: I should have read the forums, this product will not maintain an Internet connection on cable or PPPOE DSL. The support for netgear has no answers and the VPN requires you to purchase Client Software which is an added cost.
I have been networking for a number of years and this is absolutely the worst product on could buy.

Other Thoughts: To meet the requirements of my customer I got a Snap Gear SG-300 which allows VPN with PPTP and IPSEC without client software and a much more dependable product.
I got busy an went past my 30 days for RMA but I would rather throw this away than stick some poor unsuspecting soul with this junk.

2 out of 5 eggsHaving to RMA

Pros: Web based interface is great when it works. This is my first netgear product that I have had issues with!

Cons: I am having to RMA to Netgear. Even after updating the firmware, the interface locks up and have to do a factory reset.

2 out of 5 eggsI Would Not Buy This Router Again, UNLESS ...

Pros: Neat little router that works really well (but see my "Cons, below). I really LOVED the browser-based interface. The interface is very intuitively designed with excellent help file information that's written well enough that even a novice networker could understand it.

Cons: It locked up frequently and you'd have to cycle the power to reset the router each time. Through my tests I was easily and consistently able to duplicate these lock-ups by directing my browser to certain web sites. I'm confident that these lock-ups were somehow related to a network usage setting within my browser, however, I feel that there should have been a firmware update or some forum-based info to help eliminate this recurring problem from occurring. The routers I used before and after using the FVS-114 NEVER locked up.

Other Thoughts: In summary, UNLESS they've updated the firmware in some way to make this router less vulnerable to these lock-ups, I must regretfully give this router the two-out-of-five rating I gave it.

I'm sure there's a solution out there, but I suspect that this nifty little wired-only router was not a big seller for Netgear and perhaps it didn't get all the attention it deserved. If they could have only prevented the lock-ups, I'd not hesitate to give this router at least a four or possibly a five NewEgg rating.

I've since replaced this router because of needing to get one with a wireless capability. I must strongly emphasize how much I enjoyed using the FVS114's interface compared to the interface for my first router, a Linksys. The Linksys worked perfectly too, but gosh, the people writing the user manual and help file info for the Linksys must have thought that all their customers were networking experts.

5 out of 5 eggsJust works

Pros: It just works. Set it up to VPN back to a FVS336G which took all of about 5 minutes to configure on both ends; then I shipped it out to a remote user who just replaced his old router with this and was instantly on the office network.

Cons: You do need to update the firmware, but really that just doesn't take more than a minute or two.

Other Thoughts: It is what it is, don't try to do more than it was designed to do with it.

5 out of 5 eggsworks for me

Pros: Excellent product. Does good job. I have VPN with 5 locations and it works stable.
Easy to setup. cheap but still has some sort of advanced features.
see other!

Cons: the firmware it comes with has to be changed. otherwise you might have have disconnects.

Other Thoughts: For the last year I purchased about 10 of them and all of them so far doing great job for me. Had some problems from the beginning. I tried to use all versions of firmware but only Version 1.1_01 worked perfect for me.
