4 out of 5 eggsGood switch but web interface could be better

Pros: Reliable under load.

Cons: Web admin interface can be flaky.

Other Thoughts: We bought one of these GS724T units back in 2005 for a backend network for servers (dual NICs) in the datacenter, to keep backup and management traffic off the public interfaces. All 24 ports are in use and backup traffic gets pretty heavy at night. The switch never locks up and never needs power cycled, but the web interface has the occasional tendency to go unresponsive. We have to wait a couple minutes then log back in. One time during the past 5 years, we had to do a hard reset on the switch to reset to factory defaults, then set config again, after the web interface failed to respond after a long wait. Would I buy more of these? Yes, because they are good solid workhorses at a good price, for any environment that just needs a basic (unmanaged) switch for moving bits.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked, but no SmartWizard Access

Pros: 24-port gigabit switch

Cons: After 5 or 6 troubleshooting steps with Netgear online support, the switch could still not be accessed by the SmartWizard software which is required for firmware upgrades and full control of the switch. I RMA'd it back to Newegg, thankfully still in my return period.

Other Thoughts: Good performance for the money, if it works.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Performance

Pros: VLAN Support
Lots of Configuration Options
No Downtime
Gigabit Support

Cons: Web interface is nearly impossible to use. Sometimes the interface loads fine and sometimes it doesn't load at all (browser indicates javascript errors). Interface worked fine until I upgraded to the latest firmware (hardware v3).

Other Thoughts: While I haven't used every feature available on this switch yet, everything so far has worked as intended. If you can live with a shaky configuration interface (seems to prefer IE6 over anything else), this switch delivers on everything it promises.

1 out of 5 eggsmore dissapointment

Pros: Gigabit

Cons: As good as an unmanaged switch. SNMP doesn't work over 100mbit, needs a reboot every time i need to login to the web interface

Other Thoughts: My general thought is to not buy any more netgear products. Every one doesn't deliver what it says. I finally sold it on an auction website.

3 out of 5 eggsFirmware Upgrade GS724T

Pros: Seems to be a good switch for the price. I have not performed extensive testing of the VLAN capability yet.

Cons: After running the Smart Wizard discovery tool, I was trying to determine if I needed to update the firmware. Searching Netgear's website revealed many firmware updates for the GS724T. None of these worked and I kept getting an "Illegal Firmware" message. They key is to search on Netgear's website for GS724v2 (which is the version two of the switch). There you will find that version v1.0.3_35F is the latest and only version at this point. Only looking at the bottom of the switch did I determine that it was a V2 version. Very confusing on Netgear's part!

5 out of 5 eggsbit of config

Pros: The switch worked great once we assigned it a specific IP address. Did not work with just connnecting it to the router. The lights would cycle through without a specific IP address being dedicated. This is a techie as it went. Which is not very techie by the way. Very good switch and the communication through put is outstanding. Please plug it into a surge protector to avoide spikes that may freeze it up, but this is standard when using a switch. Great function at a great price. Buy before 12/31/09 and get a free video camera through netgear. Kinda of a bonus. New Egg of course was great on delivery.

Cons: None really, just make sure you assign a specific IP address. Because there are so many environment configurations this can be deployed in, the instructions only take it so far, but support is out on the Netgear website if you need it.

5 out of 5 eggsGood switches

Pros: Fast, solid, stable, and quick to setup and deploy.

Cons: A quickstart guide would have been handy to tell me what the default IP and passwords were. Aside from that, no complaints!

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for VLANs and Jumbo Frames, this is a good switch with SFP options for production use.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: This switch is a great value. The VLAN features are powerful, flexible and
easy to setup. QoS and STP work. Decent throughput and solid construction.

Cons: More like a layer 1.99 switch. Very inflexible MAC-address level blocking and it can't report MAC-address/port bindings at all. Port auto-negotiation can be flacky.

Other Thoughts: Even though it has some limitations it costs much less that the competition. I'd recommend unless you need more advanced features (in which case get the Netgear GS724TR instead.)

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good Unit

Pros: Well built unit, good interface, relatively inexpensive, has gigabit port, dual WAN and rack mountable!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have used at least five of these for clients and they work great for the small office. Cant go wrong with this one!
