5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch.

Pros: Fast, reliable and low power

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this switch back in 2008 to replace an old cisco 24port unit to reduce the power draw on my home network, and it has been super reliable, never given me a lick of trouble.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Old Truck

Pros: Metal Case. Ease of use. Works out of the box. Knock on wood but I have never had a metal cased Netgear dumb switch fail.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Seriously, it's like my Dad's '61 Ford F150. Light blue, ugly as sin, but it ran forever.

4 out of 5 eggsNetgear GS116

Pros: Great switch! Used on my home network and at lan parties without problems. Has a nice metal case instead of plastic.

Cons: Power supply started making some squealing noise and finally failed after 6 years of being on 24/7/264. Runs a bit hot sometimes.

Other Thoughts: Power supply doesn't appear to be covered by the lifetime warranty, fortunately I found an equivalent one laying around.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst gigabit switch ever

Pros: It stands up to the job for a set amount of time.

Cons: This switch is TERRIBLE. I've cashed in on the "lifetime warranty" at least 4 times at home and 3 times at work. Links randomly renegotiate down to 100mbps after it has been on so long, sometimes you'll get the random endless reboot cycle from the switch, sometimes you'll just get rampant packet loss. There are components inside these switches that fail and cause them to need to be replaced AT LEAST once per year. I got fed up with this routine at work and replaced our GS116s with a proper Cisco SG200 series switch and have only had one random "cold boot" that we so far have attributed to a small fluctuation in power. Otherwise the thing runs for multiple years

Other Thoughts: Don't bother with this junk unless you like being without a switch once a year while you wait for a new one in the mail. It is not worth the shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Product

Pros: Good performance for the price range.

Zero noise.

Compact design.

Lifetime Warranty.

Cons: Doesn't support 802.1ax but I knew that when I bought it.

Not managed, but wouldn't expect a managed switch in this price range.

Other Thoughts: Picked it up with a MIR so it came out under $100 in the end.

Replaced two D-Link Green 8 port switches I was having concerns over.

Has been running for about two months now in a home setting. Used for Inet, Media Sharing, NAS access, etc. About two dozen devices trading traffic around about 2-4TB per month without issues. No reboots needed yet.

I would recommend Netgear switches for home/small office setups. Have several of them now that have replaced D-Link and Linksys products that I used to have running everything around the house.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Reliable

Pros: Nice Metal Case, Fanless, Compact design

Cons: Locks up way too often, Throughput between my Freenas Box and a windows 8 machine goes from approximately 70Mbps down to 1Mbps about once every two weeks. A power cycle is then needed to get the switch functioning again.

Other Thoughts: I'm also very dissapointed with Netgear's support via their website. It seems like they want to make it as difficult as possible to open up a support case. They make you fill out way too much information & then you're supposed to receive a password via email which never comes. I'm now unable to open a support case because I have no password and when I do a password reset it tells me email address not found. I just purchased one of TP Links Gig switches I'm hoping for better luck.
