Linux developers and hobbyists will love the NETGEAR KWGR614 Open Source Wireless-G router. Because of the open-source code the router uses, you can create firmware for specialized applications such as gaming, VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), security or increased signal strength. The 802.11g wireless standard is backwards compatible with the older 802.11b standard, allowing it to work with a wide range of Wi-Fi-enabled equipment.

Open source doesn't mean you have a lack of security options. You get 128-bit WEP encryption, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK as well as stateful packet inspection (SPI) and DoS attack protection. Dual detachable antennas allow for additional flexibility and a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch for wired connections to your network.

Enjoy the freedom and flexibility of a wireless connection!

  • newegg 802.11n (draft) Support Compliant with draft 802.11n, the NETGEAR KWGR614 delivers real-world performance up to 2X faster than 802.11g wireless connections and is fully compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices.
  • newegg High Wireless Security The NETGEAR KWGR614 wireless router supports WPA and WPA2 standards for use of the supreme encryption available regardless of client device and features a built-in firewall to prevent potential attacks from the Internet.
  • newegg Open Source Code The Open Source Code feature allows router customization for Linux developers and hobbyists.

Pros: Easy to Install

Cons: The router is extremely slow. Disabling the stateful packet inspection helps but still the delay is high. I was not able to stream video over a 10 Mbps internet connection when the router was plugged in. The firmware uses Linux 2.4, when most newer versions of OpenWRT use Linux 2.6. Also installing anything but the original firmware will void the router warranty

Pros: Decent for internet surfing.

Cons: As previously stated, connections drop on a regular basis and the signal's strength is highly inconsistent.

Other Thoughts: Not purchased from Newegg. High traffic area, Apartment Complex with wireless internet. Computer is located in the living room with the wireless router around 10 yards away.

Pros: Looks good. Strong signal (see "Cons"). Easy setup.

Cons: Constant connection problems to 3 laptops. Signal starts strong and fades. Poor connection speeds. Once again, starts quick, and fades. Generally speaking, not a very good router.

Other Thoughts: Had another router by the same company and have always found NetGear products to be "top drawer". This one seems to be the exception to the rule. My last NetGear lasted over 5 years of constant service. Was only replacing it because the power cable was becoming frayed. This was not the right choice.

Pros: Good Range, and Sercurity. Internet explorer works greats. but...

Cons: ... when it come to games connection drops like it's cool. Everytime I play game I disconnect the router and play directly from my modem, at least until I get a better router.

Other Thoughts: I don't even want to refund this product, I want to smash it into the wall, for sll the drop connections on me.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Good

Pros: easy to set up...

Cons: I ordered this for a customer... I tried it out for a week, it drops connections, really ¢rappy... I had the laptop sitting within a FOOT of the thing and had trouble staying connected at times. Drops both LAN and WAN. oh and it overheats too.

Other Thoughts: there are better routers for cheaper price... if you get a netgear router, be sure to stand it on end, it seems to keep it from overheating.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid router, no issues

Pros: Easy to set up right out of the box, exactly what I expected to see from Netgear. I have had VPN connections running for 1 week straight without a disconnect, haven't had to touch it since I configured it.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I was apprehensive after I read the reviews, but I've been happy with it. Excellent range, I can still get a full-strength signal at the far end of our up stairs.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Router!

Pros: SPI Firewall, easy setup....that's about the only good things to say about this router.

Cons: Just like one of the other reveiwers, I have to reset this router at least once a day, especially when the wireless connection is being used by someone else on my home network.

Other Thoughts: My work associate has one of these too, and reports the same problem. All of this trouble and netgear STILL has not responded with a firmware upgrade.

2 out of 5 eggsLook elsewhere...

Pros: Not sure if there really is a pro in this router. How can netgear sell such a bad product?!

Cons: Has to be power cycled or reset at least once a day.

Other Thoughts: I bought this router after looking at the reviews. At the time, there was only 3 reviews and they were all great, so I decided to buy even after hearing stories about netgear routers. It worked fine for a few days, and then I needed to power cycle it because it will not connect to the net. I just got my Linksys and Im doing very good so far. This one will go back.

2 out of 5 eggsDaMoisture

Pros: Great range, initial setup was easy.

Cons: I think they were joking when they put VPN pass-through in the specifications. I have a very hard time getting *any* service other than internet browsing and pop3 email to work with any consistency. For example, every time I want to connect my Cisco VPN client, I have to go into the router setup and change the MTU. Not to anything in particular setting mind you, just needs to be changed. Same is I want to use Trillian or AIM.

Other Thoughts: Netgear's technical support was basically useless. They told me to disable SPI firewall, forward the ports, and create a DMZ. First of all, it didn't work. Second of all, what's the point of a router with SPI if I'm going to disable it? What if I want to use Trillian or check my email on different computers? My recommendation to anyone considering buying this router would be to buy a Linksys.
