4 out of 5 eggsPatience <3 Geeks

Pros: This switch works great for the price; remember that, you get what you pay for. Configuration is easy, after you get the web interface is up. Able to power 16 IP cameras plus 6 VOIP phones. LIFETIME WARRANTY!

Cons: Web interface takes a little effort to get up (follow packaged instructions + reboot). See "other thoughts".

Other Thoughts: I've found that Firefox V15 seemed the most stable with the web interface. At first, just power up and let it boot. Then plug in your PC on the same subnet. The switch will have a default IP of 192.168.0.238 (double check, I forgot. It's in the instructions). Then type in "admin" and "password" as user and pass. Finally configure IP address and save. If you can't connect to the new address after a minute, power the switch down and power up. Let it boot up and it should work. Now you can make any other changes to the switch.

I've configured 3 of these so far at different locations. This is the best way I found it to work. If someone has a better way, please let us know!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Inexpensive awesome PoE

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: this thing is great. 30 ports, 24 of 'em PoE and at a fraction of the cost. It's incredibly stable.

A lot of people gripe about the web interface, but who the hell uses a managed mode for a switch for PoE devices? Most of the time it'll be for security cameras or powered WiFi access points anyway.

This thing is seriously freaking great.

2 out of 5 eggsSteaming Pile of Chips

Pros: - Low cost PoE solution for a VoIP network
- Gigabit uplinks
- Lifetime hardware warranty
- Blue is my favorite color

Cons: - Firmware update process on my v1 of this went badly - even if proper process followed, it is risky (just search online...I'm not the only one)
- No serial port
- No firmware recovery procedure
- Web interface only allowed for 2 connections from the browser, whereas my browser by default tried somewhere north of 10. What this does is cause the interface to not load completely. Known issue and easy enough to fix in the browser itself. This is more or less an annoyance, but just shows a lack of attention to detail.

Other Thoughts: I have other Netgear stuff that I like very much. I'm not super fond of the web interface being the only option and loathe that there is no serial port for recovery of the device. This device really only has PoE and the uplinks going for it in my opinion. Beyond that, it is horrible. I'd suggest to someone not getting this specifically for only VoIP traffic to look elsewhere, such as one of their switches with all gig ports for not that much more.

1 out of 5 eggsweb interface sucks

Pros: 4 GbE ports, PoE ports work well

Cons: web interface does not work with modern browsers,
and there is no other way to configure the switch.
I can no longer recommend netgear to anyone.

2 out of 5 eggsGood until it dies

Pros: PoE, good uplink options, management interface, lifetime warranty...seems like a perfect choice for an office with 10-20 devices including VoIP phones. I'd rate it four eggs based on the features.

Cons: As others have commented, the fan in these things are loud...you don't want to share an office with it.

Firmware update process is clumsy...look THREE firmware updates to bring a switch to current firmware, and I had one brick on the final firmware update (first two firmware updates went fine, so yes, I did know what I was doing).

Tech support issued an RMA for that switch (no complaints with that part) and I had to pay about twenty bucks for advanced replacement (annoying, but it includes return shipping, so OK). TEN DAYS LATER: "advanced" replacement unit still has not shipped per RMA status page, so I call tech support to see what the holdup is. They advise that my RMA has gone to the warehouse and that "I'll just have to wait". Great...I have a dead switch with no ETA on the replacement, and they have more of my money.

Minus two eggs for pathetic warranty fullfillment...

1 out of 5 eggsComplete Junk - Avoid

Pros: 24 ports of PoE

Cons: The setup GUI is a complete piece of garbage. It does not load properly and is broken. You cannot setup the switch because of the broken GUI. I Tried with IE, Chrome, and Firefox. Even called tech support and they recommended that I exchange them. Sorry Netgear, these are going back but I am not buying your switches again.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great, fan noisy

Pros: - Perfect port count for medium office
- Rock solid construction
- Gigabit uplinks

Cons: - Only gigabit is the uplinks not the switch (pay for what you get)
- Fan(s) are noisy and would be uncomfortable in a quiet office unless installed in a telco closet etc

Other Thoughts: Working great with a number of Cisco SPA phones using the auto POE detection. Running numerous other computers, printers etc without a hitch. Make sure to install this in a closet or somewhere to isolate the fan noise.

5 out of 5 eggsUsed in Hospital VoIP Setting

Pros: We use them with a full ShoreTel VoIP set up in a hospital/healthcare environmen. VLANs. Inexpensive. Can use Fiber adapters, Gigabit backbone.

Cons: Not Layer 3

Other Thoughts: I love these. They are very inexpensive, and do everything I need them to. 100 Meg to the phone/desktop is fine... I connect them to each other via the Gigabit ports (or fiber if connecting rooms). Have recommended to other agencies, and will continue to do so.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent PoE switch

Pros: Cheap 24 port PoE switch with 4 1Gbps ports

Cons: Fans are a bit noisy but doesn't bother me since the switch is in a rack with noisy servers

Other Thoughts: I've had this switch running non stop for 20 months running 16 IP cameras (Arecont 3100M) in a casino environment. Not one issue. I have 4 servers connected to the gig ports, with over 200Mbps of data going through it 24/7/365. I would buy this again in a heart beat.
