5 out of 5 eggsI'm Impressed!

Pros: Easy setup and connection! Works as advertised, and am completely satisfied - the great Newegg sales price was a plus!

Cons: No issues!

Other Thoughts: I had previously thought about a router, but most were wired and installation was a nightmare according to reviews. This is my first shot at a wireless router. After a lot of comparison and reading reviews, this Netgear had everything I wanted (and more). Installation was a snap, and I was up and running in 15 mins, taking my time! The installation disk takes care of everything - if you want an effortless setup with great performance, this is the router for you!

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Wireless & USB, etc.

Pros: Easy setup. Love the USB port.

Cons: USB Port worked well for a while. Now it does not connect to the external drive anymore. Try different things to no avail. I completely reset it started from scratch still USB external won't work any more. Wireless, works for about 2 weeks or so then my Wireless computers will disconnect. It takes me a while to get back on. Second wireless computer same issues. The second computer uses a Netgear USB wireless N card.

Other Thoughts: I will soon call Netgear to try and resolve this. My old router was better just not N. I loved having my USB external connected while it worked too bad.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Little Guy

Pros: Gig ports make it usable as a router and not just an access point. Compatible with DD-WRT (but make sure you get the right revision). It's surprisingly light for the stuff it's capable of.

Cons: The admin area is terrible. DD-WRT is kinda mandatory.

Other Thoughts: The newer revision doesn't have that "visible" antennae in the picture. It's just flat on both sides. Also the back panel is slightly different. Not a big deal, it just looks a little less cooler than the picture.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit

Pros: Good old Newegg.......Ordered on Thur. afternoon and received the router on Fri. Followed the instructions and did not have any problems. My old Linksys was always dropping connections and so far this unit has not had that problem and seems to be much more secure.+++ Good price and free shipping.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you have a problem connecting to the Netgear website while installing this unit look at the set up instructions to get the user name and password.

3 out of 5 eggsWell not What I expected

Pros: It is a great router and access point

Cons: If you are trying to use this as a Bridge, this can only be done in With WEP and not WPS,WPA2, ect. This is what I wanted it for.

Other Thoughts: Wish it stated this in big letter in the specifications

5 out of 5 eggsStill Going Strong

Pros: G or N, it connects with ease. As long as you're within the range-gate, you should connect.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: In the period I've had this router since the earlier review (see Surprisingly Simple crossgrade), I've used it with four laptops wirelessly - one Toshiba (G), two from HP (one wireless-G and one with wireless-N) and one Dell (N). Two laptops have Vista installed (Toshiba and one HP) and two have Windows 7 (the other HP and the Dell); all four connected using WPA2. The laptops themselves were on the first floor, with the router in the basement. N connections were no worse than 65 mbps (the router is set for Mixed, as the one laptop we own is a Gateway with a wireless-G PC Card; the various laptops came in for troubleshooting and belonged to family members or family friends). I'm waiting for the first HP (that currently has Vista installed) to come back, but only because the owner replaced that laptop with a newer model, and is gifting me with the older model, which I intend on blanking and replacing Vista with 7, which I have on my desktop.

5 out of 5 eggsMUST HAVE

Pros: The best part about this router is that you can put after-market firmware on it. The processor says it runs @ 453 MHz. Within the two weeks I have had it, it has been perfectly stable. The wireless has an incredible range even in a crowded Wireless area. Was able to pick up the wireless signal from approximately 50ft on a horrible wireless card. Speed is as advertised.

Cons: I like my networking equipment to sit horizontally, and this is strictly upright. I suppose that's more a personal preference as opposed to a CON.

Other Thoughts: I didn't take any time to look around at the netgear firmware. I put DD-WRT on it within the first 2 minutes of uptime :)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: This thing is great. I've bought two of these, and both are fantastic.

The wired performance is most impressive. This thing can handle heavy loads from many sources at once (including 20-player LAN parties) on Fast Ethernet, and Multiple heavy gig ethernet loads.

Wirelessly, it's pretty good. The lack of any external antenna connections is a pain, but it's not a bad internal antenna. I've had better wireless, but not without an expensive dedicated access point. Traffic between wired and wireless machines is always quick and smooth.

Netgear's setup disks are always a pain, but the browser interface is pretty straightforward (And I think it has a setup tool as well). Managing MAC access lists is unnecessarily complicated, but it works.

Customer support is great! 24/7, and I can actually get an understandable rep (and actual help).

Cons: Not overwhelming wireless, but not bad either.
No external antenna support.
No wireless on/off switch.

Other Thoughts: Definitely worth the price, and does everything I need it to, and does it well.

Netgear makes quite a few routers like this one from $100 to about $175. If you're primarily looking for wireless performance, definitely drop $20-$30 more for one with Dual-Band and/or MIMO technology.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy setup of computers and consoles (Wii and Xbox 360) with full functionality. No messy tweaking required for VPN. My v2 came with the latest firmware already installed. Best router experience ever, just waiting for something to go wrong...

Cons: Not great signal 2 floors away from the router (3 floor townhouse with the router on the top floor) but still connecting with plenty of strength for surfing, gaming and streaming are great anywhere else in the house.

Other Thoughts: This router replaced a Westell 7500 DSL-Modem/router supplied by Verizon, which would not allow a firmware update, was a headache to set up for VPN, and would not work with my Xbox 360 (wired or wireless). It took some work to get the Westell set for bridge mode (the verizon help site, and dslreports.com were the most useful), but once that was accomplished the rest of the process was a breeze.

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality product

Pros: good quality product, has wireless repeating option, Wireless N with Range Max, can support 54mbps to 300mbps. Interesting trafficing options.

Cons: Cheap plastic outer casing.
Can't enable/disable certain wireless standards (B,G,N) instead you have 54mbps to support (BG) and 145mbps in overlapping areas and 300mbps (N). Some advanced options suited mainly for multimedia and gaming.

Other Thoughts: Good quality product, suited the purpose of what I needed it for.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Router!

Pros: Set up was very easy, I set it up on our home computer running Win XP. The Wifi worked great on it. Everything hooked up wirelessly. Our ps3, TV, Wii, laptop, and mp3 player. The speed and range are fantastic.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: We owned a Dlink and had nothing but trouble out of the box. Had their customer support help twice to get it to work. Never could get it to work with the wi-fi

Pros: Very Nice Router with good user interface and lots of options. Very light and runs cool. Had it running now for 3 months. I replaced my Linksys WRT54G with this one and then set the Linksys up as a second WAP.

Cons: None that I can see. The Wireless range is ok....Could be a little better. That was why I gave it 4 stars.

Other Thoughts: I would like to see a router that has 8 ports instead of the usual 4 and a rf connector for an additional antenna.
Don't buy this router retail!!! Newegg is the only way to go!!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: This is the v2 version of the WNR3500 - which means it does have the Broadcom chipset, and can be flashed with DD-WRT. That way you have SSH and quite a few other toys. Other than that it boots up fairly quickly, assigns IPs quickly, and doesn't get too warm (my old belkin felt like a toaster). Me likey.

Cons: None thus far. Flashing with the DD-WRT image was a bit dicey, but not exactly something the average user will do much.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible Router

Pros: Netgear's installation process is excellent. If you are a novice in the network area such as myself, this router is way too easy to install. Experts should like this as well. Remove the old router, plug this one in and run the installation cd...wow...and it's working.

The router checks itself for the latest firmware update then asks if you want to install it... Heck yeah! Seriously, this Netgear router is a brain-donors delight and just too darned easy to install and configure.

My niece living in my basement has seen a significant increase in the signal with this router. I have this router set up on the second story of my house. So the signal is going through several walls and the concrete garage floor! This router replaced a working Netgear WGT624V4 router. I can definitely see the improvement with this Draft N router.

My wired connections can detect the 1 gig connection and downloads now scream!

Cons: Cannot think of any at the moment as it is works wonderfully.

Not really a con but the software on the CD was not compatible with Windows 7 64 bit. ALthough you can easily set the router up manually. You can also download the Win 7 64bit CD from Netgear's website. I simply used a laptop running WinXP to install the router.

Other Thoughts: This is my fourth Netgear wireless router and I've only had to upgrade/update due to new technology improvements. My old routers work famously and I usually donate them because they still work great.

I purchased the WNR3500V2 which is the version two edition. This model is smaller than the WNR3500V1 and doesn't have the blue flashing lights on top of it. Since I needed the router ASAP I purchased it at a local store. As such, I was able to cherry pick through the boxes to locate the much smaller box with the Version 2 model.

Two years ago I purchased a Linksys and it was such a hassle to install that I gave it away and went back to Netgear. Never going to buy anything but Netgear. It just works and it's easy to install/setup.

As others have noted. This model, WNR3500 V2, uses the same Broadcom chipset as the WNR3500L, but lacks that model's USB support.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!!!

Pros: Fast router, easy set up, good wireless coverage. Easy WPS set up with other devices i.e. bridge w/WPS capability.

Cons: blinking lights too bright and annoying

Other Thoughts: This is my second Netgear product replacing an old WGR-614 router. As expected it was an easy set up....remind you I'm no tech geek but this was just too easy to set up and I was up and running in no time. Extremely happy with this product!!!

4 out of 5 eggsDoes it all

Pros: Can be used with or without Internet connection used. Works well for both, just access point and Internet firewall! Has good on-line help built-in to web admin system. Works very well as a simple Wifi repeater. Good support for PPPeP and PPTP used by DSL. Good DMZ and port forwarding support.

Cons: Lacks explicit setting for access point only. But if you leave Internet jack disconnected and you turn off DHCP server and UPNP it does what that check box would do.

Other Thoughts: Some negative comments talk about what I described in cons. The lack of this setting is confusing some about using this on a local networking with a different router to the Internet. But this DOES work and can access locale systems as well as the Internet. I have laptops going through this access point using local networked printers, getting DHCP network settings from a router to a cable modem ISP, and sharing files with windows systems on the local network both ways.

Also there are comments about the Wifi radio signal strength not being very good. I did not find this to be true. It benefits/suffers from the same problems that any Wifi radio will suffer from. If there is other near signals (from cells for example) or objects that interfere with radio then the connection will seem slower. This is more a problem with radio waves then this device. Location and proximity to other radio devices will affect how well any wifi works...

5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly Simple crossgrade

Pros: This router replaces a four-year-old WRT54GS. The issue with the GS was wireless range, not any other issue. (The GS will be held on to as either a backup or may be configured as a repeater/range-extender.) The only wireless client *currently* is an XP-based laptop; there are two wired desktops (both running Windows 7).

Cons: No cons whatever.

Other Thoughts: This review is for the WNR3500-100NAS (and the identical WNR3500-1VCNAS, which is the same router in Comcast clothing) and can also apply to the recertified/remanufactured version (WNR3500-100NAR).
The newer version is the WNR3500 V2, and uses the same Broadcom chipset as the upcoming WNR3500L, but lacks that model's USB support.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks so far

Pros: Draft-N with 3 speed setting 54,145 (Default), 300. Built-in Gigabyte 4 port hub. Auto update firmware. Auto Channel selection. Familiar interface if you used the WGR614 v9. Low price & fast shipping, ordered it at 2 p.m. on Thursday and had it Friday afternoon.

Cons: Not really a con but the software on the CD was not compatible with Windows 7 64 bit, you can easily set the router up manually. Also I had to force my iMac running bootcamp with Windows 7 64 bit to connect wireless. I chalk that up to a Windows 7 problem since the iMac found and connected fine in OSX.

Other Thoughts: Coming from a Netgear WGR614 v9 (may set it up as a repeater later) the change over was very quick and easy. Currently have 8 devices attached, 6 wireless including PS3 and printer. Giving it 4 eggs instead of 5 due to the short length of time I've owned it. I will update this later on if something goes wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding router

Pros: Sleek design
Great range
Gigabit awesomeness
Easy to install without the CD (if you know what you're doing)
Same GUI of my last Netgear router
Remote Connection just for the router

Cons: None I could find. People complained about the wireless not working... Again... if you know what you are doing... You can make almost anything work. People just jump to conclusions real quick instead of troubleshooting equipment and trying things out.

2 out of 5 eggsNeeds some serious attention from netgear

Pros: Gigabit switch works great. Decent price.

Cons: Firmware abandoned by Netgear. Uses very outdated dnsmasq binary for dhcp and dns with severe security vulnerabilities. (it was years outdated before the router even came out!) Do not buy if for a business as it will not pass PCI compliance. Wireless AP, UPnP, DNS and DHCP unstable and crashes a lot requiring a reboot to get them back. Do not use with a PS3 using the North American firmware as that will instantly crash the UPnP daemon on it. It will still work for network connectivity when that happens but you need to load the international firmware for that to be fixed since Netgear just stopped supporting it half way through the release of the updated firmware.

Other Thoughts: Unable to use more stable/updated aftermarket firmware on it from places like DD-WRT and OpenWRT because it uses a marvel chipset. And since Netgear has abandoned it you will need something else if you want reliability out of it. If you are only interested in wired connections and you don't have a PS3 or need to use in a business environment that processes credit cards to where you need PCI compliance. Or care that you have to reboot it all the time. This router is for you.

5 out of 5 eggsNice router

Pros: Good router. I bought this to replace a Dlink DGL-4300 that was going nutty on me. This thing has worked great, had almost no hiccups with it. Very fast, simple setup. Wireless seems to work fine (i prefer wired connections). All laptops have connected to it very quickly and had no interruptions.

Cons: For some reason after the initial installation and setup, it hiccuped and reset the settings after a reboot. I redid the settings and it hasnt done that since. Worked perfectly fine after that.

Other Thoughts: I guess I don't really need gigabit speed on a 4 port hub... but cant hurt. :)

You can turn off the flashing blue lights with the switch on the back.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: it simply just works. fast, stable, have yet to see a drop connection.

I had a linksys SRX400 WRT54GX4 and with signal strength "excellent" a blueray movie cuts in and out (not enough bandwidth), CONSTANT dropped connections..

Upgraded to Netgear WNR3500 with corresponding gear, and oh my gosh, night and day differnt. I can stream a blueray movie wirelessly across the house perfect! not a single dropped connection.

Cons: with it was DD-WRT compatible.. this was my only reservation to not get this router.. however, no regrets because it simply just works. after experiencing 8 years of linksys (differnt models) always dropping connections, its amazing to discover wireless now that just works.

Other Thoughts: past linksys/cisco user here. i thought dropped connections were just part of wireless... until i discovered Netgear! WOW, not a single dropped connection, fast.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router great price.

Pros: This router with the most current firmware has trumped all of my previous routers performance. I'm a gamer who plays over wifi and I couldn't be happier with the stability of this router's signal and speed.

Cons: As seems to be the trend lately it probably needs a firmware upgrade out of the box. I upgraded the firmware on mine the second I got it and didn't even bother trying to configure it until this was done.

Other Thoughts: I've tried the Linksys 310n and a D-Link which is similarly priced. In an apartment complex with a crowded wireless space this Netgear out did them both by leaps and bounds.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked Great for Three Months...

Pros: Simple to set up, worked great for three months, covered 3500 sqft home without a problem. Was able to obtain speeds approaching 300Mbits, and worked flawlessly with other Netgear products (including a print server).

Cons: All was well until about the 3rd month of ownership. Then suddenly the router dropped all wireless connections. Wired was fine. Started as a once a week occurance, now happens every 24hrs. Speed has also dropped considerably.

Other Thoughts: For some reason this router seems to have wireless issues 2-3 months after purchase. Hit the Netgear forums, and you'll see others who've run into the exact same problem. No resolution from Netgear, and the rare firmware updates haven't resolved this issue, either.

Pros: Easy setup, great range

Cons: Those lights on the top....they're kind of annoying.

Other Thoughts: I read previous reviews about this router, but in my case, I didn't have any problem at all, the router is working great, I placed It high on a shelf, away from hte modem and any electrical device just like the instructions mentioned, that might be the key.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: When it worked, the router was speedy. The web-based control panel is friendly, attractive and reasonably feature-packed. Very good wireless signal at long ranges.

Cons: The router frequently rebooted on its own, and often had to be rebooted manually for reliable operation. Many simple setting changes required a reboot, when other routers do not require it for similar configuration changes. The reboot process is very lengthy, at least four to five minutes. The router bricked itself during a firmware upgrade. The flashing lights across the top are a gimmick; they invest money on a physical switch to turn them off, yet a power switch (which would be much more useful) is not provided. Technical support is outsourced and simply awful.

Other Thoughts: Obtaining an RMA number for this product took an HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES, not including the first call attempt which was disconnected after 20 minutes on hold. When I did reach a rep, I explained the problem and the procedures I had followed to resolve it within the first five minutes. It was obvious and unambiguous the modem was "bricked," as it showed a blinking yellow power light after multiple factory reset attempts. Nevertheless, I was forced to go tedious troubleshooting steps. Even after I convinced the tier-1 support rep that this router was not going to respond to troubleshooting -- which could have gone on MUCH longer -- it took me 30 minutes with the next tier, from the time he said he would provide me an RMA#, to the time I actually received the number and return address. I was placed on hold multiple times for several minutes each. This is not a case of getting a bad rep or two, this is an inherent issue with how Netgear has structured its support strategy.

1 out of 5 eggsShort life expectancy

Pros: All the functions that a typical homeowner would look for. Reasonably easy to set up. Reliable,... until no longer so.

Cons: After 1 year and 2-3 months, the router has started acting up. Although the wired network is stable, the wireless periodically drops, and sometimes comes back after a few seconds, sometimes a little longer, and sometimes, it requires a power-off/on. After doing some research, it seems that "retail" routers do have a 2-3 +/- year life expectancy - this one (perhaps just mine) seems to be on the very short end of that range...

Other Thoughts: Not sure that going for a "high-end" (or perceived high-end) model is worth it, this is, after all, my 5th router in 7-8 years (all different models.)

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: Extremely fast when not losing packets.

Cons: Loses a lot of packets making for an undesirable web experience.

Other Thoughts: This router was provided to me by my cable provider when I purchased 50mb internet. The router is extremely unstable. It is just too early for Wireless-N technology to be on the market.

Be sure that you do not have any draft-g cards connected to the network. It will bring the router down to draft-g speeds for everyone.

4 out of 5 eggs802.11n Draft 2.0 Rangemax Gigabit Router

Pros: Great throughput and range, when it's not going through the length of a wall to reach the HTPC. Adding external antennae at the HTPC made a world of difference (try the R*sewill!). Except when the microwave is on (oops..), easily move 60-90mbits/s in either direction. So, can play HD from up or down stairs, regardless of where files are located, or just move them before play. That's actual throughput - not the reported link speed. Beats the pants off anything ANY g router could do, 108mbps models included.

Oh - can't remember the last time it stopped working. Why? Because it hasn't. No lost links. Easy to set up, and after checking which channels my neighbors were on, easy to set it to the channel with the least interference. Finally, I can't see why anyone who move files around on their home network wouldn't want Gigabit speeds. My hard drives and mobo controllers are the only things slowing me down now. Woo-hoo! I'm quite pleased with my sample.

Cons: What the heck is w/ their support? I've never had a router or adapter that showed the WPA passphrase transparently before, and this one shows it plain as day (ridiculous and dangerous feature). I called to ask if there was a way to hide it, and the fellow told me it was of no consequence, and he wouldn't be telling anyone that it should be changed. Gadzooks, that is ignorant!!!

Other Thoughts: I have a few different brand adapters, and they all play reasonably well with the Netgear. Note that all the Type N are Draft 2.0, which I'm sure helps with the compatibility. The Type g work ok too, but are going to be given away soon... <G>

I'm glad my box has been working well, and I hope it continues to do so. Previous Netgear WGT624 (v2 and v3) were both solid, but the range and throughput just didn't hack it for multimedia, so I've stuck with the brand and not been disappointed. Ventilation is fine where I've put it, so maybe that's why I seem to avoid overheat-related failures. Knock on wood...

4 out of 5 eggsHeld out for a LONG time

Pros: Set up was a snap with CD. Plug and play for the most part. I built this PC. Have a decent understanding of that. Routers are a whole other animal. You really need to have a better then basic knowledge to hook up a server type set up for the home. The CD made this a easy set up.

Cons: None so far? of course I have only had it up and running for a few hours...

Other Thoughts: I really did not want a wire less router in my home. (Security reasons) This unit offered a plug in option with up to four pc's. After reading several reviews I opted to give this one a try. The WNR3500 has a secure log in feature. It is encrypted my thought is NO ONE in my neighborhood can figure it out. Good bet some has a snoop to figure it out? There was no choice that was has cost effective has this one. Working great on XP 32bit. I hear there is a 64bit fix on the net gear site. My next build will be testing the fix for sure. Updated it after install with no problem. Cd takes you were you need to go for that. Real nice not have to bang my head on the wall in a forum room.

Pros: I have used this router constantly for a year now and I couldn't be more pleased with its performance. Even with 2-5 constant clients and a steady 24/7 steam of 30-500kb/s up and down this router continues to preform well. I only have to restart it maybe once every other month; unlike the 3+ times a week with Linksys routers I have had in the past.

Cons: Very limited number of hardwired users.

Other Thoughts: Due to the traffic on the default channel the router was set on I couldn't even see the router on the wireless initially, but just using the intuitive firmware to switch the channel to a less populated one resolved the problem.

5 out of 5 eggsSaved my LAN Parties

Pros: Super fast, pretty easy to set up, rock solid operation, completely silent, gigabit ports, updates firmware by itself, its pretty :)

Cons: Only 5 ports. Have to get another switch to accommodate all my gear. If they only made one with 8 ports...

Other Thoughts: Old router was bogging down traffic on the network, dropping connections, etc. Just was worn out. This fixed everything and I was able to replace that router and an access point with this one unit. It's been perfect ever since. No reboots or anything. My only suggestion is to let it grab whatever updates it needs before setting up anything, then all will be good.

Pros: Full Future Set. I liked the Gigabit connections and QOS support

2 out of 5 eggsHaven't got it to work, yet...

Pros: Anythings better than the router I inherited. Trying to upgrade my office internet and this thing seems like it would be way better.

Cons: Unfortunately for some reason it's just not working with a hub. I have a hub that connects about 30+ pc's in my office, and I need this to work with it. Maybe I bought the wrong product. I don't know much about routers.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could find a site that would better explain how to hook it up to a hub, it assumes you're in a home office or something.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Stands vertical and has internal antennas, makes for a clean look. The status light give a clear indication of whats going on with the router, and the lights are not that blinding blue color some other manufacturers use.
Easy to set up, web interface is three column with categories on the left, current settings in the middle, and a detailed description on the settings with help on the right. You don't have to go fumbling around looking up a setting description in a pdf or on another page, it's right there.
Speed on LAN connection are just as fast as if you were plugged directly in to the nic card. Speed on wireless is as fast as the LAN, with in 1-2%.
Range is excellent, works everywhere in my house, and in the back yard. I've connected with laptops running XP and Linux, plus my daughters Wii.
I have one desktop connected 24/7 with a WN111v2 running Beyond TV and it's never dropped.
The default settings out of the box worked fine. Qos is there if you need it.

Cons: Flashy blue lights on top are kinda cheesy, but their OFF by default.
At the moment I've read reports that firmware upgrading threw Firefox causes some people issues. Something to do with java. I didn't have a problem.

Other Thoughts: For all you cable users; if this router (or any really) doesn't want to get DHCP from your cable modem, don't call the router maker. Call your cable service and say, "Hola, got myself a new router, reset my modem real quick will ya". They will, and all will be right with the world.
I was hesitant to but this router because I usually go for their products that come in a metal case, if you know what I mean. But so far so good.
Well done Netgear.

5 out of 5 eggsGotta Love Netgear

Pros: Works flawlessly. It has that same Netgear admin screen with a few new bells and whistles but basically the same in form and function. The router itself is rather small and attractive.

I love the on/off button in the back (so I don't need to restart by unplugging and plugging the power). There is also a wireless button in the front which is very useful.

Cons: I wish Netgear would add more IP addresses that could be exempt from the blocked sites/words list. It seems silly to only exclude all but one IP, is Netgear not aware that it's possible for 2 parents to have 2 separate computers and a computer for the children?

I won't take away an egg, but that is definitely a 'Con' and not an 'other thoughts' comment.

Other Thoughts: N rocks

3 out of 5 eggsNetgear WNR3500

Pros: Gigabit ports, setup wizard, great throughput when functional.

Cons: Possible line negotiation issues with DOCSIS cable modems. 1st level tech support outsourced and repetitive with troubleshooting.

Other Thoughts: I spent the last month working with Netgear tech support because the router could not acquire an IP address via DHCP from my cable modem. After going through the same steps multiple times with 1st level support techs, I was able to RMA router and issued a replacement. Same problem with replacement. My Linksys WRT54G and my other computers do not have issues acquiring IP from modem when directly connected. I decided to connect the modem to a port on an old Linksys 10/100 switch I had lying around and connect a cable from a different port on the switch to the internet port on the router. Voila! everything worked like it should. Netgear 2nd level support was engaged by this time and finally concluded that Netgear routers can have issues with DOCSIS modems and there wasnt anything they could do for me at this point and I should just continue using a switch as a workaround if that works. Very disappointing. Going back to reliable Linksys products in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsoverall good router

Pros: Worked really well for the first 4 months, with occasional hangups with the router, generally just unplug and restart. Decided to change my wireless settings on monday last week and the router automatically started to update with the .29 firmware, even though .30 is available. Well it got stuck and after an hour of waiting for it to work I did the standard reset and power on power of scenario. This did not work it started to blink in the front called customer service and after a while they decided to send me a new one, recieve on wed logged in to router and it started to blink no conection. Called tech support and they were very helpfull this time the tech new how to fix the problem. I am rating this high because customer service was good and it worked really well most of the time.

Cons: cons is it hangs every so often, but not since .30 update. and it has been running for 12 hours now. other down side is that I have not got it to run at full 300 yet. If you get the blinking light in the front try below.

Other Thoughts: Called tech support and they were very helpful this time the tech new how to fix the problem. Switch local TCP/IP to constant IP 192.168.1.25 and gate way to 192.168.1.1 dns constant 191.168.1.1, then changed the network confige duplex settings to 10mb/ half duplex , when into CMD ipconfig and ran tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put c:\firmwarefilename got a confirm upload, let router sit and it recycled after that checked router by running a ping, connected tested setting by running openign a browser worked, went in changed wireless settings has been running well since.

Pros: Fairly easy to setup, mostly plug and play. Fast connect and download speeds. Gigabit instead of 10/100. Good security in mixed mode. Recognized my iphone and 2 laptops and netbook right away

Cons: Blue blinking lights on top are bright, but you can turn them off so not really a con. No paper instructions except to insert disk. Confusing as to sequence to hook up power and cat5 per instructions on sticker. Reboot the cable modem to get it to register a new connection.

Other Thoughts: So far so good. I like the new speed. I didn't know what I was missing until now. Should have upgraded sooner.

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT ROUTER

Pros: This router has been very reliable and has a plethora of security settings. Gigabyte wired connections work great. Wireless connections have endured 2 hour+ downloads from XP sp2 to large video files w/o problems. Firmware updates are flawless via XP or Vista 32/64. Many router options probably more; than you will need and the technical support (overseas) has been above average. Main reason for tech support calls were me misreading the documentation. Currently have 3 wireless connections and 3 wired connections w/o any notable performance issues. Nice flashing blue lights with wireless antenna operation.

Cons: Had to do an immediate firmware upgrade to get reliable operation. Currently using firmware rev. V1.0.29_8.0.29NA w/o any major /minor problems. Firmware operations take about 5 minutes depending on your internet connection. Wish there was a button for on/off however, I leave my router on 24/7/365 so not a major problem.

Other Thoughts: Have been using NetGear products for over 10 yrs. They consistently give great value for the buck; however, there are better products available but you will have to shell out a lot of extra cash.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat royter

Pros: The router works great. I live in area with 30 other wirelessn networks so I only use the 145megs setting. I do get a gig wires in. Use a cat 6 network cable for all your attached devices. I have one desktop, 2 laptops and a network printers. Great encryption. I use the last one that has tdk and aes.

Cons: Bad stock Firmware. Upgrade the firmware before you get everything really setup on it. Routers freezes at times mine is always on so some times you will have to cut power to i for a second to get it to reboot and gain access to the router.

Other Thoughts: just in case anything happens do a backup of you router settings. buy the extra warranty just in case anything goes wrong. It works great with my comcast all in one setup.

Pros: Gigabit, wireless-N, built-in functionalities, price.

Cons: Router hangs from time to time, even after updating to the latest firmware. Have to reboot the router from time to time.

Pros: Pretty flashing blue lights around the top edge.

Cons: Never achiIved more than 216Mbps with 5 different USB sticks I tried in my notebook and the Gigabit 1000Mbps is no faster than WNR2000 or WGT624 on my ehternet network.

Other Thoughts: Having tested all the major brand routers over the years, Netgear is still my favorite but surprisingly, NONE of the USB wireless sticks or PCMCIA cards have EVER produced the best wireless speed when used with Netgear routers. D-Link sticks deliver 108Mbps with my former WGT624 and a D-Link DWA-130 is delivering full 300Mbps with Netgear WNR2000 but only 216Mbps with the WNR3500.

1 out of 5 eggsNot quite...

Pros: It was easy to initially set up, simple interface for administration, wonderful range.

Cons: I had nothing but constant problems with it. The first issues were solvable by an initial firmware update. However, after a week or so it started dropping DNS look-ups (I had to specify EVERYTHING by IP for internal and external websites). After 6 months of putting up with this (since I'm cheap and didn't want to replace it), multiple unsuccessful calls to Netgear... a power blink (even being on a NEW power surge) completely fried it.

Other Thoughts: I'm fed up with Netgear. Their products always have a wonderful start but let me down after about 2 months.

I replaced it with a Linksys/Cisco WRT160N and have had no problems since (it's been approximately one month now).

5 out of 5 eggsI'd buy it again

Pros: I have used Netgear for years. The only reason I buy another router is to increase speed and range. My WNR3500 has worked flawlessly. I also have four laptops (3 PCs and 1 Mac) connected from time to time along with 4 wired PCs. Three of the four wired PCs are Gig capable, but I can't really tell Gig from 100Mb in my applications. The wireless is amazing when downloading or transferring data.

Cons: None at this time.

Other Thoughts: When others talk about poor customer service, I can't comment except to say that I have never called them. I have had installation problems, but I knew how to fix them because they were the common problems such as firewall blockage. I have had five Netgear wireless router models and I keep buying Netgear because it works. The WNR3500 is no exception. If this router went bad after a couple of years, I would buy another one. Nothing lasts forever and it is always on.

5 out of 5 eggsGOOD ROUTER

Pros: Draft N. Vista Ultimate X64 compatible. The ability to set up wireless security for both WPA and WPA2 simultaneously which is good for older wireless cards that don't support WPA2. SPI firewall. Easy setup (didn't use the CD), downloaded current software/drivers from the website. The lights (although bright) will inform you when there is a wireless connection. The ability to turn the lights off. The Netgear wireless software is much more informative than the Windows Wireless 0 configuration. Wireless Access List capable (I recommend using it for an added layer of wireless security). Good wireless coverage (I live in a 4,000 sq ft home and the router consistently maintains 95% signal strength at the farthest point). 1 Gbps LAN speed for fast network file transfer. Stable. Checks for firmware upgrade automatically when you access the router, which you can disable and do manually,, if you so desire. Runs warm, not hot when heavily used. Attractive exterior.

Cons: None at this time. Time will be the true test.

Other Thoughts: One of the other reviewers stated no firmware support through Mozilla Firefox...I have no problems with upgrades through Firefox 3.0 browser. I have 1 desktop PC(Vista Ultimate X64) hardwired connected, 1 desktop PC (Vista Ultimate X32) connected wirelessly using the Netgear WN311B PCI wireless card, 1 ASUS EEE Box (Windows XP Home Version) hardwired connected, 1 HP laptop (Windows XP Pro) wirelessly connected using the Netgear WN511B Wireless N PC card, and 1 Dell laptop (Windows XP Pro Business) connected wireless using internal 54 Mbps wireless card. All are connected simultaneously and I have had no problems.

Pros: I used manual setup. The most recent version of Apple iChat does work with this router but must be setup in iChat preferences to use SSL with port 443. Router must be setup using port triggering per Apple's instructions.

Cons: Netgear support is poor.

2 out of 5 eggsI feel violated

Pros: Well, it's cute and it has nice flashy lights on it.

Cons: I am constantly losing wireless connection. Tried turning off uPNP like some had suggested, but changed from having to reboot router daily to every other day. This router hates to have large video files streamed across it, which is why I bought a GIGABIT ROUTER!!!

Other Thoughts: I have always been a long time fan of Netgear, in fact I almost exclusively sell Netgear networking products, but really feel let down on this one. I'm really hoping that there is a firmware update coming soon to fix it. But for now, I have a $100 brick sitting in my equipment room. Even my wife hates this router.

1 out of 5 eggsPlease avoid

Pros: Easy to setup, nice lighting

Cons: Wireless was terribly unreliable, no Firefox support for firmware updates

Other Thoughts: Had this for about 2 weeks, and wireless would drop off intermittently, requiring several reboots. No router should EVER have to be rebooted, except for firmware updates. There was a firmware fix put out to help with the wireless reliability issues, but when attempting to apply it, it froze up and the router was hosed, no reset or backdoor methods were able to recover. The Netgear unit was returned to the store, so I ordered the reliable Linksys router from Newegg and was back up in running in one day, with better WAN speed and wireless reliability. Avoid this unit and stick with units that are proven to work, this feels like a beta version of a product.

4 out of 5 eggsgood router

Pros: Good speed, good firewall and easy to set up.

Cons: Had to turn off the UPnP to make it stable for what ever reason.

Other Thoughts: I used the disk in a computer already connected to my DSL or Cable modem and let the wizard configure the router for three diferent locations without a hitch but had to disable it's quick connect feature to make it stable.

4 out of 5 eggsThe power of Wireless-N

Pros: Range, installation, speed, and styling is awesome. Always bought Netgear routers and this is the best one yet. Easy install compared to the older ones I had. I'm very pleased with my wireless upgrade.

Cons: Like everyone else who bought Netgear products, Customer service sucks and this time I am glad I didn't have to deal with them this time around.

Other Thoughts: Great upgrade for a home network. Easy to connect with all my systems(PS3, 360, WII, PSP, PDA, MAC, laptops and printer), so far.

2 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: LAN works fine... I guess.

Cons: Outsourced tech support which were very unhelpful 2 out of 3 times called. WAN while having a strong signal, runs poorly on my laptop. Unable to access the network with my Wii and wireless HP printer. Both devices detect the router connect then drop after 15 seconds to 1 minute... Desktop and laptop unable to see each other on the network, may be an issue with McAfee though?

Other Thoughts: I called tech support on 3 separate occasions, they were of the opinion that I was having browser issues on my laptop... they didn't bother to ask what browsers I was running, Firefox and I have IE as back up, both of which run like molasses. I brought up the fact that my Wireless printer wouldn't stay connected and they dodged the issue entirely. Overall I'm very dissatisfied with their product and outsourced tech staff. Going to try Linksys next...

4 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

Pros: easy to setup and understand interface, right now I'm sitting a bit less than 100m from it signal strength is at 78% and 216 Mbps speed. All in all I'm happy with it.

Cons: Netgear support is pretty bad all around so I just hope I don't have to deal with them.

Other Thoughts: The blue LEDs on the top of the unit are super bright and obnoxious when trying to sleep in a dark room, luckily the button on back turns em off.

1 out of 5 eggsRouter has a mind of it's own.....

Pros: Nothing is a pro for this product. I expected more for the money I spent! The only pro I can come up with is it has pretty blue LED's on it.

Cons: Everything. Did I mention everything? The router worked great for about 2 months, and then it developed a mind of its own. It continously drops the WiFi connection and keeps changing the IP addresses on all of my computers by itself. We have done everything from firmware updates, to Technical support which is NO HELP at all. The outsourced tech. support is extremely rude and discrimatory against women and very accomodating to men. (I had to call when my husband was at work and was treated like I had no clue as to what was going on. My husband called and got treated like a king!)

Other Thoughts: We expected more from a company like NetGear, especially since this unit is under warranty. (2 months old) They refuse to replace it because it is working (intermittently) with my desk top, but does not work at all anymore now with either of my laptops. I will never buy a NetGear product again!!!

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible Netgear product - Stay Away

Pros: Setup was easy. Type in sn and pw for PPOE and simple plugin/reboot for cable. Awesome signals(when works)

Cons: This is where it gets interesting. Every changes to router setting required at least 2 mins reboot from router. While it sends out signal wirelessly, my PS3, laptop, iphone could not find the SSID network name. I had to reboot to get it working again. While my PC is plugged in, it works for a while and then stop working on me. Again, had to reboot to solve that problem.

Other Thoughts: All in all its a bad product from Netgear, i expected better. I own linksys wrt54g for 5 yrs and never once it does that. I thought i tried out this router but i was left with uter disappointment. Oh well, back to finding a linksys router for me.

4 out of 5 eggsNice-looking, works, but with minor niggles

Pros: Great-looking unit. Rock-solid and fast wireless services a large area. Flashy LEDs at top of unit can be turned off if desired.

Cons: Setup is slightly more complicated than most routers. Web-based interface to router is unattractive. Changes to settings almost always require a router reboot breaking connectivity to all devices.

Other Thoughts: It would have been nice for the interface to look as snazzy as the router itself. It's also lame that every setting change requires a router reboot. If these were 2 issues were always in my face, I would have rated as 3 eggs. But once you've got everything setup the way you want it, the interface and reboots become moot, so these problems become non-issues.

1 out of 5 eggsI advise to Not Buy WNR3500

Pros: Gigabit LAN - that's all. I bought this router having high expectations - had to return it.

Cons: WiFi-N droppped continuously. I've owned 3 generations of Netgear routers for the past 5 years and had zero complaints really. However, how can Netgear think that I would be happy to lose my wifi connection from my laptop every hour? Also, very slow refreshing when changing settings - blech!

Other Thoughts: I know this is a Draft-N router but really, why should I have to deal with wifi drops? It likely is a compatibility issue between my Dell wireleas and this Netgear WNR3500, but, c'mom it is suppose to work - and does not. I refuse to buy a Netgear dongle just to make my laptop and my wife's laptop work. Netgear, are you listening?

1 out of 5 eggsNetgear - Stinks

Pros: A very good looking product sitting on the desk.

Cons: 1. Roughly one-half the wireless range of a Linksys WRT54G, which it was intended to replace, sitting 3 feet apart and using 802.11b/g equipment. Never got to the point of using it with 'N' equipment.
2. Lousy documentation, obviously written by someone fluent in Chinese.
3. Unless you're EXTREMELY adept in networking installations and consquential difficulties, stay away, it's not for the average street computer bloke!
4. Very slow in making any changes in the setup; this is believed to be due to Linux software loading and reloading; some updates take well over 90 seconds between initiation and completion of a task.
5. Definitely not USER friendly - need I say more without getting into the more technical and engineering details that drive networking gurus nuts! The major problem is there are no standards for the interface portions of the devices and that's not just a Netgear problem; however, with all the warts, Linksys/Cisco is far ahead in most of the aformenttioned areas.

Other Thoughts: Pure, unadulterated TRASH!

5 out of 5 eggsNETGEAR IS FINE

Pros: NO external antennas. Sleek, modern styling, uprite design is normally better than horizontal. Nice looking Leds. N-speed. Easy setup. Easy encryption utility.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I like the fact that it automatically checks for update for hardware version when installing. Have had no dropped signal so far. I used D-link for last 3 yrs with no problems, thought I would try Netgear.

1 out of 5 eggsnetgear 802.11n ( n = no connection )

Pros: Looks good!

Cons: howdy mates!
where to start I decided to upgrade my router about a month ago and well this new router has been nothing but agonizing frustration. cd set up was apparently written by a re****d chimps. If you can help it AVOID AT ALL COST! never had any problems with netgear gear ha ha made a funny but this router has a lot of problems got a new laptop wireless N build in. At work we have the previous version of this router and I get anywhere from 249 to 278 mbs at home in my one bedroom apt where the router is less than 10Ft I get about 80 to 140 once in a while I guess it recalls that is a wireless N router and I would get a full 280mbs not too many ssid around my place and never had that many problems...

Other Thoughts: the wire connection are normal. My wireless set up config is set correctly yet this router seems to have a personality of its own. If I transfer a multimedia file that is ove 1Gb connection will fail never had this problem before with the previous one. too bad i gave the previous router to my best friend so now I am stock with this one. To any looking to buy a N router to this one i said skip it or wait 'til net gear monkeys make an update for this one cause now is just a pretty black box with stronovision LED that frankly get annoying after an hour.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Router Overall

Pros: Works well, looks good, nice size, doesn't generate a lot of heat. The quality seems to be good for a plastic router.

Speed seems extremely good. Wireless range is excellent. Setup went well once I decided to skip the CD and simply login into the router to finish.

Another benefit for the inexperienced would be the detailed manaul (available only via PDF however).

Cons: Setup is unnecessarily complicated. Try and skip the CD setup if you know what your doing; The CD simply adds unnecessary steps and really doesn't work that well when replacing an existing router.

Another downside is the LACK of features. I replaced a Buffalo router (that sadly started dropping wireless connections after 3 years) -- and it had far more options than the Netgear. The Netgear will do its job, but there are more configurable routers out there.

Other Thoughts: I am happy with the choice, but an advanced mode would be nice for those that like to tweak features.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better

Pros: No problems with this one. Coming from a WNR854T which had nothing but problems with spontaneous disconnects of wireless and internet, and finally just died. This little gem had been going strong. No overnight problems, no dropped signals. Looks great to boot!

Cons: Even though I like the LED lightshow, my wife made me turn it off :(

Other Thoughts: Since it's new there aren't any long term reviews. Hopefully it doesn't grean circle of death like the 854.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: 5 port Gigabit switch (WAN + 4 Ethernet). Dishes out 300Mbps N speeds to proper adapters. Even dishes out a decent G signal. Xbox360 wireless adapter receives full signal on the 2nd floor (router is on 1st floor). It's Netgear. It works like its specs. Best looking Router I've seen too lol.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Stay up to date with the firmware releases at http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WNR3500.asp
I updated the firmware just after I configured the Router and got all the PCs + Xbox360 on the Network. As long as your G adapter is not really old, it should work. Use N adapters if possible ;)
