4 out of 5 eggsLasted 2 1/2 years

Pros: Gigabit ethernet ports - good support for 3rd party firmware- good feature set for price - upgrade from previous router

Cons: Started losing WAN connection after working fine for 2 1/2 years.

Other Thoughts: Replaced stock firmware with TomatoUSB and installed router in 2/2012. Did everything I wanted until it started intermittently losing the WAN connection in 9/2014. Traced problem to router after connecting cable modem directly to computer. Great while it lasted.

2 out of 5 eggsOK Basic router, with some shortcomings

Pros: Gigabit interfaces, separate WiFi SSID for "Guests", WiFi Scheduling, Static Routing, QoS, USB port.

Cons: Some of the features that are advertised only working partially, with weird, yet serious shortcomings. Examples:
- The "guest SSID" cannot be configured with a different schedule than the "main SSID". This is very inconvenient and up to a point defies the purpose of having the "guest" SSID.
- It is advertised to support "site blocking" (basic feature), but that only works for web sites that use http. For the increasing number of sites built using https, the blocks get bypassed and traffic goes through, no problem!
- The "Parental Control" feature is based on a third party / cloud based traffic filtering / policing service. It is an added potential bottleneck / point of failure, and it's not parents controlling their kids, it is Big Brother controlling both the parents and the kids.
- The Logs are recording access requests based on MAC addresses, not based on URLs, which renders the Logs almost useless (unless you know the MAC addresses of the servers on the websites you are visiting).

Other Thoughts: Support is nice and polite if you can get to them, but 90 days after the date of purchase they start charging for answering your call.
If you don't care about the shortcomings listed above, you may like it. I would give it 3 eggs, but one gets shadowed by the fact that after talking to their support, the manufacturer seems to be aware of the shortcomings, yet continue to advertise those features as being fully functional.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello DW,

You are right in that you are no longer eligible for phone support after 90 days, however you can still email us for assistance.

The standard NETGEAR warranty is as follows:

1 year hardware warranty
90 days phone support
Email support is valid for warranty support period

If you would like advanced assistance with your WNR3500L please email us at newegg@netgear.com. Provide a copy and paste of your review and any of the case numbers that support gave you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

1 out of 5 eggsWNR2000

Pros: None

Cons: Tech support is terrible by phone or internet. I was disconnected five times after being put on hold. The router has connection issue with the modem. I would not recommend this product to anyone. I can't even get a hold of a person to send this piece of junk back.

Other Thoughts: Never will I buy a Netgear product.

Manufacturer Response:

Please email us at newegg@netgear.com with the case numbers you received from support as well as any additonal information you can include about your WNR2000(or WNR3500L). Whichever product you are using.

We can'tt apologize enough for the problema and hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, configurable, open source

Pros: I bought this because I wanted to put open source firmware on it. The firmware they have is so configurable and regularly updated that I haven't bothered to replace it. Port forwarding is easy to configure. I needed it's "set the MAC address to: " feature when comcast restricted me to the mac address of the laptop I initially hooked to their modem.

Cons: none.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well for the money but...

Pros: Gigabit Ethernet
USB Storage
Easy to use

Cons: NOT DD-WRT Ready (Version 2)

Other Thoughts: Says its DD-WRT Ready BUT....
The version I received was V2 and on the DD-WRT Router Database page the V2 is currently not authorized as being supported. The Database says its "WIP" Work In Progress

DD-WRT being a work in progress for this modem was extremely disappointing.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Trevor L,

We want to apologize for the issues with the DD-WRT and would like to to contact us directly at newegg@netgear.com if you would like assistance. You can contact us at a time that suits you best.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid no-frills router

Pros: I order a number of these at one time. I have installed at least 20 of them for various clients either as a first time router or a replacement of a failed/buggy router. For the price they have a pretty good range and speed. I wouldn't recommend them for heavy local network usage, but for a household living in a medium/small house or apartment with a few wifi devices used mostly for web/email and the occasional video streaming they work pretty well. I have only had one die out and that was actually due to a power surge and the client did not have it plugged into a surge protector.

Cons: Not very fast for transferring data between computers and the range will not cover all of a large house.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Valued Router Of It's Kind (weth recent firmware update)

Pros: Netgear Genie™ allows fast and easy setup, and clear, easy to navigate menus, (unlike some much older Netgear routers.) USB 2.0 works great with USB flash and HD devices, with the Readyshare option, and Gigabit Ethernet ports make it 'future-proof' as faster services become available. Netgear stays on top of firmware for this device better than any router I have owned in the past. The updates, are quick and painless through Wi-Fi and Netgear's update server (no ethernet cable required) and the router reboots itself and reconnects quickly after the updates are completed. It also checks for firmware automatically, and let's you know when a new one is available to download. Flawless so far... and the Wi-Fi range is easily 10-20% better than my trusty old WNR2000. Another plus, is the open-source feature allows custom firmware and apps to be run as an alternative to the built-in software. Best valued router of it's kind.

Cons: The weakest link of this router is the 'single' USB 2.0 port, it's placed very close to a reset button, and it is easy to bump this button, while attaching a USB device. A recent negative review here described poor handling of USB devices, and I found that I had trouble with streaming rates initially after my first firmware update, but a firmware update as of may 2014 (V1.2.0.26_40.0.71) has made the Readyshare feature much more functional, and I seem to be able to stream much of my content all the way to 1080p HD, off of a standard 5400RPM external USB HDD. (Which is what I had hoped for when I bought it, as an alternative to a pricey media server.) A USB 3.0 port (or even two ports) would have been better, but I'm happy with how it operates with the new firmware installed. This is definitely a router for a family size network or smaller, and maybe not intended for fibre, HD streaming, etc., although it can just about handle everything, if not pushed past it's limits. The new firmware also took away my ability to see the connection rates in 'attached devices'. It was great to be able see the rates in percentages, as well as Mbit values (required a refresh), but the new improved firmware works well, and that's one less concern with others sharing my network, (for free.) (Let them deal with it.)

Other Thoughts: This router has worked flawlessly for me, other than the above mentioned early USB problems, (which were fixed with the recent firmware update.) USB set-up tip: Don't bother trying to format in anything other than NTFS on an external HDD. FAT32 is too limiting for large files and slow for HDD on USB 2.0, (but it's okay for some thumb drives), and exfat and Mac are not supported, although once you have a drive attached and formatted, you can copy, delete, and rename files from Mac and/or PC, easily. For the 'ultimate' test, of USB performance, I copied a 25GB MP4 file to the NTFS formatted drive, which was recorded last Superbowl Sunday using my TV card. It streams the massive 1280x720 HD file with no problems, and even MP4s in 1080p HD, seems to stream well too. Nods still go to the Windows 7 side when using the Readyshare option with HD streaming vs. OS X Mavericks (but that may be OS related).

If using this as a 'media server', for streaming consistent HD content to more than one or two users is your goal, you're better off to go with the newer Netgear routers with multiple USB 3.0 ports, or built-in SATA, but for the price, this is a gem. I was about to buy a dedicated music server, and realized that, although this solution is less elegant, (with all the stuff hanging off of it), it does the job admirably, cheaply and can even be accessed through the internet, (which I haven't tested succesfully yet). I've owned other brand-name routers, and will probably never buy any other brand than Netgear from now on.

5 out of 5 eggsProduct is great, shipping through OnTrac horrible

Pros: Fast, the cpu and ram are really fast.
Administration WebUI is neatly organized with good context help.
One click automated firmware update.
Hardware Revision v2

Cons: It was delivered by OnTrac to the front door of the entire apartment building; left near bushes. Even though intercom works.

Other Thoughts: Try to use non-led-blinking flash usb for ReadyShare feature, otherwise constant blinking, if you happen to see your router, will make your eyes twitch.
