5 out of 5 eggsSolid switch

Pros: For the price you'll have a tough time finding another switch with these features. Speeds are good. We use it for users who are not pushing a lot of data, but its a great improvement over the 10/100 switch that was being used before. I had to disable spanning tree to get it to work on our network but that is more related to our specific set up than the product itself. If you just want a plug and play, no config switch this would be a great choice.

Cons: The management interface works well enough, but is a little clunky. If you don't have any idea what you are doing you could do some damage but that's true for any managed switch.

None of the included config software really isn't necessary if you only have one of these, which isn't clear if you go by the included documentation.

Other Thoughts: We've had this switch almost fully used for a while now with no problems. You can't beat it for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsNetgear GS724T

Pros: Bought it as backup switch for small office that currently use 2 year old GS724T switch. New revision of the same switch comes without any fan so it is absolutely SILENT! Tons of features that are usually found on enterprise switches that cost ten times more.

Cons: Web interface sometimes will not work on Firefox or other alternative browser. Wen interface is very slow, not always intuitive and limited.

Other Thoughts: I an not a fan of Netgear products anymore because of higher than before failure rate (I am getting HP J9080A Managed switch instead), but ProSafe switches carry lifetime warranty so I can have one spare switch sitting on the shelve for less than a 200 bucks. For serious networks that require high availability look at other brands.

2 out of 5 eggsBeware of the Rebate

Pros: Switch appears to work as advertised... has been doing so for about 11 months so far.

Pretty decent GUI and easy to configure.

Cons: Noisy fan... must be installed in a closet or separate room.

Other Thoughts: The $50 rebate I sent in for this switch was never honored. Netgear says they never received my information. Didn't offer any other solution.

If you are deciding to purchase any Netgear component based on a rebate offer, don't do it! Netgear may just have a rabbit in it's hat and decide to do a little magic trick with your rebate.

My 2 star rating is because Netgear stole my rebate of $50.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Rebate center

Pros: none

Cons: I bought 2 of these a couple of weeks apart. My first rebate seems to be processing ok. The second rebate was denied due to missing UPC/Serial Number...
This is a bunch of C**P. The UPC was stapled to the forms, so if they received the form they got the label. I just think this is just a scam to screw over the customer..

Other Thoughts: I work in an environment where my input is taken on router purchases. We buy millions of dollars of equipment from Cisco, Netgear's parent company. If they are monitoring these comments, be aware that this kind of behavior will sour me toward your company...Juniper makes routers too!!!

5 out of 5 eggsLove this switch

Pros: A solid running switch. I purchased my first switch about a year ago and it has been running the whole year without ever being restarted and I had no issues. The second one I just added and it took about 5 minutes to update and copy the configuration from the first switch into the second. It has been running fine with no issues.
The power usage of this switch is nice since both of mine run 24/7.
Between my two switches I am using 41 ports (24+24 for those who have problems adding) and I have not had any slow downs, data loss or any other issues with this hardware.

Thanks Netgear, love products and the customer service you have provided me.

I recommend this to anyone needing a 24 port switch.

Cons: This switch does not have any PoE ports, but that is not really an issue but it would be nice. The latest FW update messed with the LLDP but for most home / LAN party applications this will not have any effect.
Netgear has some comments on their website about some work arounds for known issues but the LLDP issue has no work around currently. I am confident they will make an update to fix it in the future.

Other Thoughts: After reading what other people posted about this switch I question either their technical knowledge or I would suggest they received a damaged model. I own two of these for my home network.
- The first one I bought a year ago has a small fan in the side that would be annoying if you stuck it on your desk, but who sticks a 24 port switch on a desk.. put it in a coat closet or something. The second one I bought has a smaller circuit board inside with more vents and no fan (i.e. no noise at all).
- Updating the firmware was cake, simply download the latest FW to your PC, upload it through the HTTP option in the GUI (set the image to active if you need to) and reboot.. boom .. updated, no issues.
- I have had no VLAN issues either, I run two VLAN's with virtual machines.
-For those wondering, yes I use this at home and not at the office. I home school my kids and some friends kids, play games (Xbox, PS3, & PC) and do some software development.
- No issues with IE 9.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Buy

Pros: It's a 24 port smart switch with a gazillion features at a very good price. It has essentually the same feature set as the 8 port smart switchs also from NetGear(GS108Tv2 and GS110TP) but the web interface is much faster. The power supply is internal so it doesn't use a wall wart and the warantee also covers the power supply.

I had no trouble installing this switch. The shipping firmware defaulted to DHCP so all I had to do was look at my DHCP server logs/lease file to get the IP address. I set the address to a static address after setup though.

Cons: The biggest con is the fan. Yes, it does have a fan that runs all the time. It's about as loud as my laptop PC. It's certainly quiter then an full blown tower PC with an ATX power supply and it's quiter then my network firewall/router. This is the main reason I didn't give it 5 eggs. If you keep it in a closet or if you have tower PCs nearby you won't notice it.

I flashed the firmware to the latest release off the netgear support website and a licenses tab appeared. It doesn't appear to do anything at the moment, but I'm hopping netgear isn't moving to a subscription model with switches just like many companies are moving to with higher end router/firewalls.

Finally, the web interface does have a few compatibity issues with IE9. A few things don't work or don't work well. The web interface seems to work best for me when accessing it from Firefox on Linux(Ubuntu). That way even the "pretty picture" device view will work without installing anything extra.

Other Thoughts: I mostly bought this product because I like having alot of options to configure on network products. I previously owned several 8 port smart switches from Netgear but I was running out of ports. At the moment the 24 port model is cheaper then the 16 port version so this is a good buy.

1 out of 5 eggsBuggy Firmware

Pros: Low cost for a 24-port smart switch.

Cons: Doesn't work reliably. Very poor documentation.

Other Thoughts: We've run many of the older GS724 switches in our data centers for years with no problems. So when we needed to expand our network we bought a couple more. Unfortunately Netgear has a penchant for "upgrading" their products over time. So today the GS724 is "v3" and it appears is completely different to the older models we have been using. That is, the firmware is entirely new, and as you might expect, buggy. The Web UI is pretty awful : like something an inexperienced intern would have built. I could live with that but it gets worse : I was able to "brick" these switches just trying to configure ssl. That is, the switch is dead : not working as a switch, and not responding on the management interface. It took a "factory reset" to bring them back. The best I've been able to achieve regarding ssl is to be able to enable it, but the switches crash and reboot if you connect on port 443. For a low cost I don't expect Cisco functionality, but I do expect the product to work without crashing.

1 out of 5 eggsWaiting for replacement - dead after 60-days

Pros: Easy setup, gigabit speed

Cons: Dead after 60-days. Very disappointed - had to install a 12 year old HP Pro Curve to get the office up and running. Have to pay $$$ to get a quick response from NetGear on a replacement.

Other Thoughts: I am now worried about using NetGear having switched from HP to Netgear in building out a new office. Hope this was just a bad unit.

3 out of 5 eggsLimited LACP support

Pros: Seems like a solid GbE switch, with plenty of ports, lifetime warranty, and a great price.

Cons: If you're excited about LACP on this switch, don't be. The Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) have to be set up manually through the clunky web UI, and you only get 4 of them. No spec sheets (on Netgear or Newegg) mention this limitation; it's buried in the manual. I feel this is deceptive (even if common) and my rating reflects that.

Other Thoughts: Smart Control Center was not able to find the switch though my PC was connected to it. The older-looking Smart Wizard utility did initially find it though, and allowed me to upgrade the firmware and launch the web UI. After the firmware update, Control Center now works and Wizard doesn't...
