2 out of 5 eggsUnimpressed

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Comes with a disk which contains a fairly straight-forward installation wizard.

Instructions indicate up to 3 different ways to establish a connection using this product.

Found a $60 coupon code on TechBargains which lowered the price tag to $39.99.

Cons: Difficult to set up. I spent about an hour fidgeting with this device trying to establish a connection to my son's bedroom, which is about 20 feet from the base.

Once a connection was established after crawling under desks numerous times and holding this button, then pressing that button, etc, I thought I had finally solved my issue. Wrong. The connection kept dropping off intermittently. My son is a gamer and the unstable connection has made this device obsolete, which has resulted in a waste of money despite my savings. It now sits on my shelf, brand new but worthless. I may try to auction this to make $20 or $30 off of it if I'm lucky.

Other Thoughts: It might be that this device can work, but perhaps it just doesn't work for me. I haven't spent any more time trying to figure it out. I do technical work with computers at my job, and even though I'm not a network admin, I still have a pretty good knowledge of networks, etc. I can't get it to work after (I think) I installed it correctly.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Comes with software, an installation wizard. Shows a real-time network map, which is fairly easy to understand.

The instructions say the product allows 3 different connection methods, which could make the product meet a variety of connection needs.

Cons: Difficult to set up. It took me about an hour before I was able to get a remote connection established after playing with buttons and the installation wizard.

Once the connection was established, it wasn't long before it would drop off. If you are into online gaming, you know this can potentially create problems for serious gamers.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this for my son, who, thanks to the Windows 8.1 update which made his wireless network adapter obsolete, I needed a long term solution, and this one was marked way down and I found a $60.00 off promo on TechBargains, making the cost very reasonable at $39.99.
Unfortunately, the connection was unstable and kept dropping. I have yet to find a way to troubleshoot this to my satisfaction, so I've had to stop using the device. It is currently sitting on my shelf, doing nothing.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Great for getting wifi anywhere in the house, not just as far as an extender will go; creates a new wifi signal instead of having to be next to an existing one. Easy for a semi experienced tech to setup. Plug in and log into extender via its IP assigned by the router, great UI to navigate through. Wifi never goes down like repeaters.

Cons: I never used the software to configure it but it may be a little rough for the basic user to install. Also, it doesn't work on all outlets such as if your home is to large or there is an addition.

Other Thoughts: Overall I have a test powerline adapter to make sure it connects and if it does I always use this to extend the wifi.

1 out of 5 eggsEpic Fail!

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Extends Networking via Powerline. This part works very well and in fact I am writing this review connected with a wire to the device for Internet.

Cons: Software REQUIRED to configure the wireless extender is total garbage!

Microsoft Visuall C++ errors trying to run the software, Tried on two computers, one Vista x32 and the other Win7, x64. Uninstalled anti-virus, turned off Windows Firewall, tried three versions of the software.

EPIC FAIL! Stay away from this product. I just wasted an entire afternoon on the phone with india (wich I don't have a problem with, but they had trouble understanding me). The two different people I had on the line (Second was an excalation or a supervisor) didn't know any more than I did about the product. They were limited to the same Website and installation guide that I already had.

Other Thoughts: If the device were configurable via a Web interface instead of relying on software that is... well unreliable, it might have been perfect.

Stay away until Netgear makes it web based configurable.

4 out of 5 eggsGot me out of a jam

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Worked where no other available solution would. One of the hardest houses layout/construction have dealt with. This was able to get solid wireless connection to other end.

Cons: Avg user would have difficult if not impossible time with instructions. Downloaded latest software and With both units plugged into wall and base unit connected to WRT54GL, able to "see" both units in program unable to set wireless configuration to ANYTHING and have it stay "Wireless settings failed". Tried many things including factory resets, plugging Ethernet into Wireless, but problem persisted. Advanced link in program window would not work either UNTIL i used a laptop to connect to it's unsecured NETGEAR wireless! Then able to access the device itself's settings and then wireless settings stuck!!!
Next I plugged the wireless device into the room I needed wireless extended to. Everything connected and then dropped connection (still wirelessly connected strong). The connection between the two NETGEAR devices had dropped! Spent some time playing with different outlets trying to balance where could still get wireless and keep connection between devices!

Other Thoughts: Your mileage may vary with this kit. I can see where it would work great in some cases. It was hard to decide on 3 or 4 eggs.....

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: WOW! This product really solved my weak wireless signal problems. I'm very impressed by the signal that I get in every room of my house now that I have installed this NETGEAR product. Very easy to set up if you don't mind turing your secured signal into an unsecured signal. Newegg shipped this product FAST and the ordering process was fast and easy. Thanks Newegg!

Cons: I'm not going to mince words here, the instruction manual provided with this unit was useless, period. When the unit is installed it creates a wireless hot spot wherever you choose to plug it in which is great. However, the signal that is created is unsecure and there were ZERO instructions provided on how to secure this signal, so I had to encorperate the assistance of my IT professional at my office. There would be no way that the average person could install this product and secure the signal by themselves. I timed myself from start to finish and it took 10 minutes to install this unit without securing the signal and three hours to install after researching the internet on how to secure my wireless signal after install. There was no explanation in the instructions provided as to what would happen to the unit if the factory reset was activated, be careful here.

Other Thoughts: If you don't mind creating a wireless hotspot in your home or office using your exsisting wireless signal and leaving it unsecured then you won't have any problems installing this product. I feel strongly that if the product contained more detailed information on how to install the unit and secure the signal then this product is great for anyone. The installation disc provided with this unit would not run properly using windows Vista which caused some problems as well. This product however does what it says it will do and is worth the trouble.

4 out of 5 eggsHelps in individual rooms

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit (XAVNB2001)

Pros: Works well in individual rooms and because the XAVN is wireless it obviously avoids cables although one can add an ethernet cable as well to the wireless plug XAVN. Use it for IPad wireless and Blu-ray player with cable.

Speed is very good for a wireless and ethernet. Attached cable works well for Blu-ray Netflix downloads meaning the speed is v.good.

Up to four units can be used around home and WPA2 security is possible and recommended for security.

Cons: Range diminishes outside of line of sight or individual rooms but will work 30 feet away in another room if line of sight is not too obstructed.

Installation instructions are very confusing although installation is easy just plug in to your router and wall location, then install "Netgear Powerline Utility".

Run the utility program and and copy your router WPA2 security settings indicated in the utility to the XAVN that shows up. Much simpler than pressing buttons on the router and XAV(N)s.

Note you should have something communicating with XAVN, an ipad or computer, so that it shows up in the utility program. The XAVN will go to sleep within 2 minutes if not used.

Other Thoughts: Very useful for ipads, etc. The wireless plug can be moved to other rooms and will be recognized immediately. Download latest utility for XAVN2001 from Netgear. And yes it will work over different fuse/switch boxes, mine goes through 2 boxes.
