1 out of 5 eggskeep away

Pros: fast

Cons: The firmware got corrupted in 20 months and I could not get back into the unit to reload the firmware (followed instructions on the internet and there's no way to get back to factory settings). Customer service told me they couldn't help. It seems it is quite common for these models to get their firmware corrupted. I purchased a different brand with a better warranty for the same price. First and last Netgear router I buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for over a year

Pros: Dual band has worked terrific. I'm not sure we've ever had to reboot it. Easy setup and has served our department perfectly.

Cons: We're asking a lot to pass through 3 painted steel covered walls. I would like to try relocating the router to get the best coverage for our fire department bays and meeting room.

Other Thoughts: I might be a fool, but we've not even passwd protected the networks. Makes it easiest for our 30 members to connect. Haven't had any problems yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for streaming video.

Pros: I took a step back and began to count all of the devices connected to my wi-fi router. When I did the math, I needed an upgrade! This router had great reviews and seemed a good solution. After installing it, this dual band router has been amazing. 2 Roku's 4 Cell phones, 1 iPod, 1 XBox 360, 2 Kindle Fires, and 2 Laptops connect without a noticeable slowdown.

Cons: No Cons!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Can throw any traffic at it, bit torrent handled with ease.
Easy interface, didn't need to flash it with a wrt firmware
Powerful signal, like I said no need for a wrt firmware

Cons: Very tall, hard to hide in a cabinet

Other Thoughts: I didn't think I'd use the USB port for an ext drive but I have and love it, turns a cheap hard drive into a general dumping ground for backups and such

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, with DDWRT

Pros: DD-WRT compatible

The first few builds were a bit wonky, but things are working well now.

With DD-WRT, I can run multiple SSIDs on multiple frequencies.

Cons: Stock firmware is garbage

Older model, so it doesn't support the new ac standard, but that makes little difference in most home use circumstances.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router

Pros: I have owned this router for over 1 year. The setup was easy. It had been rock solid except for the discussion below.

Cons: The only con I have found is that when I have had to do a reset of the router I would lose my internet connection. So although the wireless was enabled I could not connect to the internet without first reloading the firmware. I have since found out that if I just recycle my cable modem while the Router is initializing then I am able to connect to the internet without having to reinstall the firmware. I found this in the NETGEAR genie. It has saved me several hours of time. This only works if you are using a cable modem. I have upgraded my firmware to 1.0.1.38.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if NETGEAR would describe this in their quick guide.

1 out of 5 eggsLoses firmware every power loss

Pros: Fast when it works

Cons: I have had this router for almost a year, every time the unit loses power the green power light comes back blinking indicating firmware corruption. That requires downloading the newest firmware from Netgear and pushing it to the router using FTP from my laptop. I have done this over half a dozen times in the last year.

The unit is plugged into a decent quality APC UPS and does not generally get unplugged. Just this evening I was rearranging cables and unplugged the router by accident, time for a firmware update. Not my first Netgear router but definitely my last.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Firmware

Pros: Speed, Printshare, ReadySHARE Cloud, etc, etc.

Cons: Firmware corrupts causing Green Light of death, which results in having to reinstall the firmware only to result in the flashing green light after a few days.

Other Thoughts: Found a working and stable DD-WRT that has not resulted in the flashing green light. Yes there is a working DD-WRT even though the site says WIP (Work In Progress). 4 Beta's and one stable. Keep looking, you will find it. Since installing DD-WRT firmware a month ago, the firmware hasn't become corrupted.

3 out of 5 eggsConnection drops out frequently

Pros: Ability to setup networked HDDs; solid data sharing
"Cloud" capability

Cons: Drops connections...

I 'upgraded' from a Netgear WGR614v10 Wireless-G router so I could take advantage of the dual-band support and setup some shared drives. This router frequently drops connections to many of our devices throughout the house (tablets, phones, BD players). Our LG BD player has struggled to connect to Netflix frequently ever since installing this router. I never had this problem with the old WGR614v10 router. It's pretty disappointing to think that I should go back to the old router considering what I paid for the WNDR4500 (which was much less than the current price).

5 out of 5 eggsOh...myyyyyy

Pros: Switched out my Cisco e3000 tonight because it kept slowing down until nothing worked, and then I had to fight with it to get devices back on the network after rebooting.

Not so with the N900! Set my SSID and password to match what I had on the e3000, booted it up, and *presto* went from 20Mbps -> 56Mbps with near instant connections from all 10 devices in the house!

Rock ON! Two of my coworkers have this router, and we use the N600 at work. Could not be happier so far!

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Going to replace an amped wireless ua600 adapter with the N900 adapter next!
