1 out of 5 eggsShort Life

Pros: I liked it.

Cons: Stopped working.

Other Thoughts: This is a follow up to a previous review on 3/14/14. After 3 months one of my 2 units died. The 30 day warranty bit me. Looked like a good deal but has become a waist of money. I should have known a factory refurbished unit with 30 day warranty was high risk. If the factory only has 30 days of faith why should I have any more.

5 out of 5 eggsWNDR400 still going strong

Pros: My 2nd review over a year later. This unit is still going strong. No dropped connections. I have multiple wireless devices that work fine and now I have a one that uses 5G and it's as fast as a wired connection at 50 feet 2 rooms away.

Cons: Still no cons.

Other Thoughts: Updates are easy to get but take a long time to download with nothing but a "Please wait" message. I don't know if I cut the last update short by a reboot. Now it says "update available" but then it says "is already up to date" when I check. I wish it would at least have a status bar.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It was good while it lasted. Good signal no drops in wifi signal. Easy to set up.

Cons: It lasted 4 months. 1/2 egg per month. The WAN port and port #4 died. Very disappointed on this particular product. I usually have good luck with refurbished Netgear products but not this time.

Other Thoughts: I had to bring my old WNR2000 back to be my main router. I'll be using this WNRD4000 as an access point until it dies completely.

4 out of 5 eggsI like It

Pros: So far both of mine work as advertised. The setup interface through the browser and with the netgear genie is fairly easy to navigate. The indicator lights don't light up the entire room. An on/off switch. Plenty of settings to play with.

Cons: 30 day warranty. That pretty plate on the bottom limits positioning.

Other Thoughts: After 2 bad experiences with 2 other manufactures we picked up one of these several weeks ago. We don't have any 5Ghz units but it works flawlessly with an Epson WiFi printer, Samsung TV both wired and WiFi, 2 wired desktops, 4 laptops, an Android tablet, 3 smart phones, and a variety of game units. It's not unusual to have 5-7 of these going at the same time. So, we picked up another WNDR4000 a week ago and with the exception of updating the firmware it has worked as well as the 1st. The firmware problem could have been me. I tried to do it manually off line without success. After I let it go through it's small routine and connect to the web updating was not a problem.

2 out of 5 eggsRandom wifi drops

Pros: It was cheap ($39.99) and has great stats.

Cons: When connected through wifi the connection is temporarily dropped every 10 to 30 minutes. This was especially frustrating for me having to VPN to work. Each time it would disconnect I would need to re-enter my credentials.

Other Thoughts: If you have no issues with the dropping connections it might be fine, but that will not work for me in my particular situation and I am only giving 2 eggs since I would expect a wireless router to allow devices to stay connected.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: There are no Pros for this

Cons: Don't waste your money on this device, especially the extended warranty. My router died, no power up, returned it per the warranty instructions. Returned it on December 8, 2013. Still waiting, now January 8, 2014. The extended warranty company keeps telling me they are sending a gift card in the amount of my purchase for use in purchasing a new router. Well I have been waiting for over a month now and nothing but that it is "In Process". Fortunately I had an old Linksys router I kept for a spare.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in Newegg over this matter. I have purchased literally thousands of dollars of merchandise over the past few years. This matter is unacceptable

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: Router was easy to set up and forget about it. Decent interface through web browser for manipulation. Had it for about 6 months with no problem at all. I have it hard wired to a Sony AV receiver, PS3 and a Roku. I have a wireless Asus ethernet adapter at 5Ghz at about 50 ft away and can stream at 15Mbps with a 20Mbps internet connection coming into the house. I am using both 2.4 and 5 Ghz clients (Apple, Android and Wii), works flawlessly.

Cons: None that I can think of.

3 out of 5 eggsDropped Wireless Connections

Pros: It's a very large router compared to my others that I have. Great design and clear symbols to read on the front and back. It can mount to a wall if that's what you prefer. Has a nice stand for it so you can face it towards yourself and have the cables out of site on the back.

Cons: Continuously drops wireless connections and makes it almost unusable. I scoured the internet and found this to be the leading issue of the WNDR4000. Mega loads of people upset with this router for that reason. Just do a search for WNDR4000 and dropped connections and you'll see for yourself. I also found a ton of reports where people say the support people at Netgear are pretty much unhelpful in this matter.

For such an advanced router I would have expected there to be a lot of settings that you could customize to your liking but there isn't. I mean it has pretty much a Basic and Advance options and the advance options are pretty limited.

Other Thoughts: Well I almost decided to return this and decided to search the internet for a solution to the dropped wireless connections and my persistence paid off. I even tried every firmware version available for this and none of them ever fixed this issue. As a few reviewers on here have mentioned, they talked about a custom firmware upgrade called DD-WRT and it saved this router from being returned.

The GUI for DD-WRT isn't quiet as nice as the stock Netgear GUI but you talk about a mega load of features that you have at your disposal. It's still easy to get around due to the tabbing of pages within the settings though.

If you can follow directions then head on over to DD-WRT and download you two files for this to flash and make sure to have their Wiki page up explaining exactly what needs to be done and you'll come off without a hitch. One reviewer on here mentioned that there's not a lot of documentation available for the settings but there is and it's even inside the setting itself. Also if you want detailed explanations of what a setting does the Wiki over at DD-WRT will have it.

Also as one reviewer mentioned he said he increased the reception and can pick it up a black and a half away from his home this is true. I have a separate second office that resides in a seperate structure away from my house and by increasing the signal it reaches wonderfully.

Also the new firmware allows me to create Virtual Access Points so I set up a guest account and isolated it so when I have relatives and friends over with laptops and iPads and iPhones that can jump on the guest network and access the internet and all but not have access to my local network. Nice!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk, Junk, Junk

Pros: Duel Radio, Rapid Share, on paper and in practice a nice router

Cons: The "Rapid Share" usb port freezes after a day or 2. Plan on rebooting frequently. Kinda defeats the whole purpose
