1 out of 5 eggsHard to set up

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: once set up works fine,

Cons: problem is the mywifiext.net does not exist,

Other Thoughts: Should be user friendly for set up.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsGood when it works (which it doesn't most of the time)

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Does boost wifi strength pretty significantly

Cons: Doesn't come with (much) instruction on how to setup
Setup itself is complicated without assistance from online articles
Unit is glitchy and momentarily loses connectivity every few hours
Stopped working altogether after 4 months

Other Thoughts: I bought this for use in my apartment. After a trying installation process made even more difficult by the fact that virtually no instructions on how to setup the unit were included, I was actually quite surprised at how well it worked. It boosted my wear 2-bar signal to a full 5 bars; which it maintained for as long as it was working.

Unfortunately, the unit goes in and out of connectivity which forced me to frequently have to switch back to my main weak wifi signal. It would come back in a few minutes, but it was still a hassle. Finally, after about 4 months of usage, the unit just stopped connecting to the internet. It's recognized by the computer and shows full signal strength, but it just doesn't provide internet access anymore. I've tried restoring factory setting and reconfiguring the settings, but it still fails to connect to the internet.

I may try a more expensive unit since at least now I know these types of products actually work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for providing the details in your review, we're happy to have our engineers look into this. Please email us at newegg@netgear.com with a copy/paste of this review, and we'll be glad to help. Can you tell us also what firmware version is installed on the extender?

1 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: None in my experience.

Cons: The setup process only seems easy. Since it didn't work, not that easy. I could connect to it, but it showed as an unidentified network with no internet access on 5 different devices.

Other Thoughts: Save your money. After 3+ hours, 1.5 of them online with support, I put it back in the box to return. This thing is completely useless.

1 out of 5 eggsEasy setup, but.......

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: WPS made it super easy to setup, inexpensive, small

Cons: After WPS setup, it shows limited connection on 2 devices, a Motorola Maxx smartphone & a Vaio notebook. All lights were green showing all was OK.
Did a factory reset, checked version - it's current. Did a manual setup using the mywifiext.net.
Found that once the SSID is changed from the default NETGEAR_EXT, and you connect to the new SSID (which shows limited connection), you can no longer log into the unit using mywifiext.net or with what I believed to be the IP address.
All looks good. But with devices showing limited connection or keep cycling thru authenticating-connected-authenticating (Smartphone), I have to think other people's problems are common with this unit.

Other Thoughts: Likely a defective unit. And a half-baked product?
20 years ago when I first started using Netgear, their products were first rate. Never a problem! I bought many & recommended them always. Now I'm afraid they are merely a marketing company - like HP. Very sad!

2 out of 5 eggsSlow Speeds

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Works to extend your network.

Cons: Data speeds are incredibly slower. I went from getting 2-3mb/s with 1-2 bars on main router (however it goes in and out due to it being so far away) to getting around 400kb/s max with 3-4 bars. These are actual download speeds and network transfers.
The wifi booster constantly needs to be reset not as much for me as some people have posted but a min of 3 times a week.

Other Thoughts: If all you want is a wifi extender for your cell phone/computer just to surf the net or use social media to cut down your data usage that's pretty much all this thing is good for. Downloading, online gaming, networking and video streaming is pretty much worthless. Your way better off getting 2 cheap routers and connecting them together if you can do that option.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We're concerned about the problems you report. While it's true that the WN1000RP is designed specifically for the use case you described (for mobile devices at the edge of coverage for basic Internet access) it sounds like the performance you were seeing was less than optimal. Can you tell us more about the setup?

- How far was the extender away from the main router, and how far away were the devices in use away from the extender?
- What was the firmware version installed on the extender?

Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com, we'd love to help troubleshoot and get things running for you.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsgreat gizmo

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: simple
surprizingly easy to set up
big difference in coverage
this is a great, cheap gizmo for adding range.
makes another wifi_ext ssid and you can set your device to connect to whatever is stronger.

Cons: I suppose it could have been diamond coated and delivered by emma stone in my new ferrari, but in fairness is great for 30$

Other Thoughts: this is a great, cheap gizmo for adding range.
makes another wifi_ext ssid and you can set your device to connect to whatever is stronger.

1 out of 5 eggsGood when it worked, for about an hour

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: It worked. For about an hour each time you reset it. Rather durable.

Cons: Had to be constantly reset and re-synced to the router, usually daily. Not heat resistant.

Other Thoughts: Had it for about 3 months, constant pain to use. It finally just quit syncing to the router. Even after pressing the factory reset button it didn't fix it. So I hit it harder and punched through it, Oops. Still didn't work. I figured it may work better under pressure, so I tried crushing it in a bench vise, it did take quite a bit of force to finally get it to break, however it still didn't work. Once crushed, and I was still furious, I took a blowtorch to it, just to make sure something hadn't become un-soldered. That wasn't the case, either. I'm now left with a pile of burnt plastic that used to be a Netgear WN1000RP wireless extender, and a deep hatred for Netgear. This was the final nail in the coffin for Netgear for me, and I'd rather be hanged than be forced to use Netgear products again.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

If your WN1000RP isn't really a smoking heap of twisted plastic and silicon, we'd like to help! The experience you describe is not normal for the WN1000RP, and something was definitely wrong (possibly a rare case of a hardware issue, or something in the setup.)

Can you also tell us the make/model of your main router, which wireless band you were using, and the distance from the extender to the router? You can get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com.

NETGEAR Team

2 out of 5 eggsNetgear WN1000RP review

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: It's compact and it's wireless extender. That is why I bought it. I was hopefully it can extend my wireless strength signal without slowing down my speed.

Cons: After using it 7 months, every time, I connected to this wireless extender, I found out it's slower speed than direct-connecting router (weak signal but high speed).

3 out of 5 eggsSignal Up, Speed Down

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Great increase in signal strength - almost doubled.

Cons: Reduced data throughput speed so entertainment devices still could not successfully stream Internet movies.

Other Thoughts: Have second floor router with wired computers and VoIP broadcasting to first floor laptops and entertainment devices (TV, satellite receiver, DVD player). Even with 20M Comcast Internet, all the devices together slow down the throughput speed so that Internet streaming movies are interrupted or fail. BoostWiFi device was great for signal strength on first floor but further reduced the speed. Would be fine for increasing signal strength to low speed devices like a smartphone or pad tablet, but your network speed must be high enough to start with. No problem returning to Newegg for refund.

1 out of 5 eggsWN1000RP - Worked for 3 months, then died

This review is from: NETGEAR WN1000RP-100NAS N150 Wall-plug Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Simple to set up. Good instructions. Worked really well for 3 months, then ....

Cons: Died after 3 months. Factory reset does not work.
Link Rate & WiFi Device booster leds no longer light up.
Status light takes several minutes to light up.
Reset does not work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Frustrated,

We apologize that you've been having trouble after only three months. We'd love to help get things back to normal for you, and we have some questions to start off with:

- When you say the “Status light takes several minutes to light up” can you clarify if it is lighting up in red? Will it turn green after a few seconds, or does it stay red permanently?

- Can your wireless clients still detect the WN1000RP’s SSID?

- Was there a power outage or specific event right before the WN1000RP died that may have contributed to the problem?

Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com and we'll be happy to work with you further to get things figured out!

Regards,

NETGEAR Team
