1 out of 5 eggsfrozen after update

Pros: When it worked, it performed as promised.

Cons: Consistent with other reviews, updates freeze the unit. Previously, I have been able to reset it after multiple attempts. The last update solidified it and it won't budge from the "Neotv" screen. It will not reset or turn off. No combination of resets or unplugging will help. Netgear customer service is useless.

Other Thoughts: Fairly low expectations for $60, but it should work as promised. I would pass on this unit because reliability appears to be a real issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Dastv,

We want to help get the freezing to stop-- please get in contact with us directly at newegg@netgear.com. Provide any case numbers that support gave you as well as a copy and paste of your review.

Our apologies for the problems.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: NON

Cons: Worked for short time, UNTILL UPDATE TURNED IT TO JUNK!!!! NetGear support is WORTHLESS!!!!!

Other Thoughts: After last update, all it will do is loop to update, restart, loop to update. When it restarts it says there is no usb connection. THIS PIECE OF JUNK DOES HAVE USB!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 eggsGood to bad

Pros: Has all the channels anybody would ever want. Even slingplayer if you have a sling box. Good format. WiFi and Ethernet, HDMI, good price.

Cons: Device is always updating firmware. This is what broke mine. Netgear support is no good. Cannot call them or chat after 90 days, only email ( takes forever for response and then they tell you to do what you told them you already did. Still under warranty but think I will run out (23 days left) before any RMA will be given. When I did try to call, they wanted me to buy a support plan for 79.95, even though I told the guy I could buy a new device for 40.00.

Other Thoughts: Device worked good other than updating all the time and update broke it. Netgear support doesn't stand behind there products. I am going to try Roku 2 XS. hope support is good if needed.

4 out of 5 eggspretty satisfied so far

Pros: decent streaming app support, Intel WiDi support, decent performance, got it on Black Friday sale cheaper than a Chromecast, good size, good remote, guided setup.

Cons: none just yet

Other Thoughts: Had to download 2 separate updates which took an hour or so to apply via a FIOS connection, I also had to update my laptop's WiDi software, and wireless driver, but after all that was done, WiDi worked beautifully. UPDATE your machines! Connected to a DIR-655 router sharing a 3TB usb 3.0 drive via SharePort. Programmed my Harmony One remote to control the NeoTV, but the included remote is also a nice piece of gear. This also replaces the Western Digital Media Player which was not networked and did not support streaming (non-Live version). For the price and the WiDi support, I'm glad I chose this over Chromecast and AppleTV.

5 out of 5 eggsBought this 1 and now I have 3

Pros: This is actually my third NETGEAR NeoTV I use them to view the streaming of my movie collection from my IOMega multimedia system. they work terrific, you can also stream music, pictures and internet TV from your network. I buy one periodically to save as a back up in case one fails but have never had to replace one!

Cons: Haven't found any yet

Other Thoughts: This device extends my network and does things on;y a computer could do. If you own a smart TV this will make your TV a genius !

4 out of 5 eggsNeotv

Pros: I don't have cable in my house, I use a raspberry pi in my living room, but needed something cheap and easy for the guest room. This was quick and easy to set up, seems to work well so far. I initially tried the price equivalent roku, but couldn't get it to connect with my router, decided it wasn't worth the hassle and exchanged it for this. This is great if you already have a subscription to Netflix and Hulu Plus, otherwise, I imagine it would be quite worthless

Cons: The unit itself seems a bit slow and laggy, and this is coming from a person that is used to the raspberry pi which is no ferrari. Mainly between switching apps and booting up. Once it has loaded and buffered video content plays smoothly.

Other Thoughts: This is a good complimentary device, I wouldnt make it my primary though.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Software - Bad Unit

Pros: Works fine as long as you do not update software

Cons: I called the 888-638-4327 Netgear help line.
I spoke with Nishand on a very bad connection. He transfered me, I stayed on hold for over half an hour then spoke with FRED. He gave me a new number - Q1478182 - Then said he would call me back. Then he called my cell phone number and said he was going to send an RMA to my email address. This is the worst non-existant service I have ever recieved from a company that does not care about their customers. - Jack Holt

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this Unit!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little box for the money

Pros: I'm not sure why this box gets such negative reviews as it seems to work fine for me. I did a bit of benchmarking withthe latest firmware (1.1.30NA) and here's what I came up with:
Time to boot to main menu: 31 seconds, Time to bring up NetFlix from main menu: 32 seconds, Time to beging streaming once a movie has been selected: 19 seconds, Power consumed while streaming HD: 4 watts.

Here are a couple of things that I liked. A warranty 4 times longer than Roku's. No need to create an account and give them a credit card like Roku (I've heard you can get around this by calling Roku support but that's still a pain), You don't get stuck going through proxy servers like you do with Sony "smart" TVs and Blu Ray players, a reasonable number of supported streams (112 in this version of the firmware).

Some folks complained about slow response and junky remotes. I didn't notice any delays in using the supplied remote and if you don't like the remote, NetGear has an app for either Android or Apple that you can download for free that can be used to control the box across a wireless network.

If you want more features and faster performance maybe this isn't the box for you but if you're just interested in streaming regular and high def material from the Internet, this is a good way to go.

Cons: Takes a while to boot, DLNA support would have been nice

5 out of 5 eggsQuick & Easy

Pros: What an awesome product. Practically a plug and play device. Easy to use and quick to set up. I use this to stream Netflix & Pandora and have not had any issues at all.

Cons: The design could be a little more elegant. Perhaps multiple colors
