3 out of 5 eggsWorks but with a security tradeoff.

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Small form factor, definite range increase. Push and Connect using Wi-Fi Protected Setup works easily with a Netgear router. Solved my Netflix streaming stutter due to weak router signal

Cons: It would have been nice for to know before purchasing that I would have to broadcast the routers SSID for this extender to connect. While the device works fine, it literally creates 'another' wifi network to connect to. So your wifi device connects to your router or to the extender and must be manually changed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We wanted to let you know that you can set up the extender to use the same SSID as your router. Have you tried this approach? Please contact us at newegg@netgear.com if you have any further trouble!

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problem at All

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: The device was easy to install and clearly improved the reception in the area around itl.

Cons: I really didn't see any cons from a technical point of view. From an visual point of view there is room for a more stylish product that doesn't look out of place in your sitting room or other areas of the house.

4 out of 5 eggsReally Works! Not a Miracle...

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Easy to setup, Dual Band, and NetGenie works with it as well.

Cons: None really it works for what I wanted it for. Mission accomplished.

Other Thoughts: I am using a NetGear 6300 Wifi Router with the Extender and have many walls and obstacles (chimney etc..) so the Extender actually improves the signal by a little over 30% of the original Routers signal throughput. The greatest distance I have is 80+ feet on 2nd floor - good signal using Extender.

5 out of 5 eggsNice extender

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Easy installation and set up
Definitely increased signal strength in the house
Small form size is great for unobtrusive hiding

Cons: None to speak of- had a bit of an issue setting the upper band but solved it with a firmware update from NetGear.

Other Thoughts: It was a perfect compliment to the dual band NetGear router in the home office and has allowed the family to use their tech anywhere in the house with excellent signal strength.

2 out of 5 eggsNot really a Full-Fledged WiFi Range Extender

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: * Compact size
* Dual band support
* Desktop or wall-plugged with adapter
* Very strong WiFi signal
* FastLane™ Technology
* On/Off Button

Cons: * Creates separate SSID broadcast WiFi domains, one for 2.4Ghz and another for 5Ghz frequencies.
* Requires user to manually switch WiFi networks when traveling from primary WiFi domain to "Range Extended" WiFi domain (and vice versa).
* Complicated configurations, which uses Virtual MAC addressing, which impacts MAC filtering and DHCP scope in the primary WiFi router/AP.
* Actually not easy to configure unless using WPS, which has inherent security concern. WPS cannot be "turned off or disabled" per se.

Other Thoughts: When I read the description of this product, I thought I would be able to take my WiFi device and travel from my primary AP coverage area to the Extended Range area with the Netgear WN3500RP. Instead, the Netgear is really a restricted WiFi AP with limited features and uses Virtual MAC addressing to connect to the WiFi router or AP which is being extended. I have to manually switch from one WiFi network to another WiFi network since they are really two different WiFi broadcast domains. For the price of a WN3500RP and its limiting capabilities, it would have been better to purchase another WiFi AP (or even a router and configure it in bridge mode) and create a full-fledged WiFi network separated by geography (aka first floor, second floor). Hence, it was disappointing for me that the WN3500RP is not a true WiFi Range Extender as I expected.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing little device

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Works as advertised. Increased the WiFi range in my house and now I get 5 bars of 5g and 2.4g.
Shows me what other IP address is on my WiFi.

Cons: The security on it could be a lot better and the online management could be a lit simplier/easier.
I have to connect to "WiFi name_2G" or "WiFi name_5G" which is a little annoying if I am walking around the house.

Other Thoughts: I love the way it works and how it helps to extend my WiFi range.

5 out of 5 eggsIt just works, and very very well

This review is from: NETGEAR WN3500RP-100NAS N600 Wall-plug Universal Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

Pros: Awesome. I mean, this is so simple to set up. The key is to follow the directions exactly, which are pretty basic. You plug it in, you enable the WPS, and you are connected. We have a dual-band router, adding this essentially adds another dual-band connection in the house, as simple as that.

My wireless connection speed went from under 54MB at best with lots of disconnects and difficulty even establishing a connection to usually over 200Mb now with no disconnects, and rapid establishing a connection. What is not to love.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: We have a two-level home. The router is in the corner of a room on the upper level. The dead spot I was trying to resolve was in the lower level on the other side of the house where I have a PC located with a wireless USB network card. I placed the extender on the upper level roughly above where the dead spot is located (think 3-dimensionally when placing this). My wireless connection now regularly registers 100MB, and often 200 - 300Mb. Wireless speed is very fast, and no disconnects. I mean, none. Also, I regularly use remote desktop so I can connect to my work PC, and I can tell when the wireless speed is slow. I can now do so from this particular computer, I could not do so before.

Finally, I have experimented a little bit with moving the extender to different locations so I can extend to different regions of our house, e.g., our outside deck. It works great, and there is no need to reset anything. Once you initially set up the extender, you can then unplug it, move it if you want, and plug it back in and your wireless device will read it. As simple as that.

Note that our router and my USB wireless card are all the same make as this extender. That could play a role, but I doubt it. Other wireless devices get the same strong signal.
