4 out of 5 eggsDecent wireless router.

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: For two weeks it's been pretty solid, no reboots or drops.
The android Netgear Genie app is VERY good.
Decent performance.
You can turn off all except the power LED.
Good web interface.
Working VPN and DDNS clients.

Cons: I think the Netgear Genie app for Windows could use some work. The android app is excellent for doing a wireless survey to find what the neighbors are using for channels, and how it impacts you. I recommend looking at all the apps and the built in web server setup to see all the features. Using an Intel AC7260 in a NUC, had to tell it to prefer the 5ghz band, but that is not the router's fault. Almost everything else is just a little bit better than my old N300 router, but the clients aren't AC.

Other Thoughts: I only give this 4 stars, since only a couple of my clients can take advantage of it. So, it's better than I had, but only marginally.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid router, worth the price

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: It took a while to convince myself to spend the money on this one as I've never spent more than 2 digits on a wireless router but it was worth it.

Signal range is very impressive. I live on a third floor apartment and it's still at half signal strength if I take my phone outside and across the street.

The Web Admin is decent. Supports IP Address reservation (based on MAC Address) and Port Forwarding, which are honestly the only two things I absolutely need from the software.

I have CAT6 cables run to 3 desktop computers in separate rooms and file transfers between them is lightning fast.

Antennas are solid and vents for airflow are adequate.

Cons: Occasionally needs to be rebooted, but what wireless router doesn't? I've dealt with far worse over the years.

Other Thoughts: Works great with Roku 3, PS3, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Macbook Pro, iPhone, iPad, and Android phones all connected at once. I've had it since May 2014, and it's been solid.

This thing looks like a space ship!

1 out of 5 eggsNot even close

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: Looks Good

Cons: You cannot even set the DNS servers that DHCP gives out with IP Addresses. this is kind of a very basic feature that I have never seen left off of a router before. I am sending it back as soon as I can drop it off at the UPS Store.

Other Thoughts: Netgear Phone support knew way less than me about the router they were supposed to be supporting. I am very sad for Netgear.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Scott,

We apologize that support was unable to help you. Keep in mind that we also have advanced email support available for you-- simply email us at newegg@netgear.com with the case numbers support gave you. If you need anything else or have any questions please let us know.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid!

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: Solid - on DD-WRT
Stable
Fast

Cons: Not enough control features with default Firmware

Other Thoughts: Comapred to Asus:
I upgraded from the Asus RT-N16 about a year ago and this router has proven it's worth. I bought this one and the Asus RT-AC68U at the same time for comparison, and I ended up keeping this one. Mostly because DD-WRT was stable for the Netgear and was in the first steps of development for the Asus at the time.

Features:
One of the biggest things I needed was the ability to disable the Internet for certain devices at certain times (via DD-WRT Access Restrictions). There is a built-in version for the Asus which had a nice GUI, but was very flaky on the configuration. I also use VPN, FTP (to my NAS), DDNS, and a few other Port-Forward configurations. This router combined with DD-WRT is a great combination.

Testing:
When I was setting this up for that first week I have to admit that the Netgear Factory Firmware was really good for performance. I had to spend a few days tweaking the settings on DD-WRT to match the default firmware. I actually ended up getting it to be a little bit faster. But, I do not know how stable the default firmware is... I had it up for a few days with no problems or reboots. With DD-WRT, I barely need to reboot it at all.

OTHER REVIEWS... Just something to consider when reading other negative reviews....

There are several reviews which are complaining that they have to reboot the router frequently because they lose Internet connection, but they don't include any level of troubleshooting. I have Time Warner for my ISP and was originally using their $8/month UBEE Router/Modem, configured in bridge mode. With that setup I had to reboot all of the equipment about once every two weeks, which gradually increased to once every other day... I was able to confirm that the router was not the problem. I bought my own Motorola Cable Modem 4 months ago and I have only had to reboot the router once since that time.

4 out of 5 eggsBeware the latest firmware

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: Fast
Simple UI
Enough features to make you happy

Cons: Latest firmware is buggy

Other Thoughts: When I first got this router I updated my firmware right away, configured it.... then started to experience very weird performance issues. After doing some research, I saw that some people got around these slowdowns by downgrading the firmware. So, that's what I did. I went from the latest down to 1.0.2.164_1.0.15 and my router started to work flawlessly, consistently giving me the max speed of my internet connection at (125MBPs).

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware: Warranty is Only 90 Days; Netgear Scams You and Will NOT Stand By This Router

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: If it works, it's pretty fast. However, if it doesn't work, Netgear will give you the run-around and NOT give you a warranty past ninety days.

Cons: I bought this router for $200 in May 2014. I registered it with Netgear right away along with the serial no. It was unstable and rebooted once every few days, but I thought an updated firmware would fix it. The new firmwares did nothing to improve the stability of the router. In fact, it started to get more unstable. The white LEDs will turn off, the amber LEDs will go on, then the router will reboot. By March 2015, the router was rebooting every few hours. I unplugged the router, reset the router, and even reflashed the firmware. Nothing works.

I submit an email to Netgear for support. You cannot get phone service or customer support after 90 days but you're supposed to get a whole year of hardware warranty. Well, Netgear has scammed you. You cannot get the hardware warranty without going through customer support. In other words, you cannot get your one-year hardware warranty after ninety days.

CONCLUSION: This router has a 90 day warranty. DO NOT BUY IT.

Other Thoughts: There are tons of comments here where people have had the same problem. Netgear will say, hey, send an email to newegg@netgear.com.

If Netgear really cared about their support, however, wouldn't they FIX THE PROBLEM for everyone rather than just the squeaky wheels?

2 out of 5 eggsShouldn't be wireless

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: Good router for wired.

Cons: Don't buy it for wireless connectivity. I switched all my wireless connectivity to an older router because I got so fed up with this router's wireless being intermittent I just disabled it. I am most disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Please email us right away with the serial number of your unit and what you just described.
Email: newegg@netgear.com

We want to get your R7000s wifi working properly right away and can't apologize enough for the problem.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Fast Hardware

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: This is a state of the art piece of hardware, bulky but functional

Cons: A state of the art hardware is just as good as its firmware, in this case a $20 router will do better.

Have been playing with this router since it was on the market, from the very beginning i realized the firmware was not in pace with hardware so i started looking the web, i also tried tomato but it was an early build and unstable. After installing Kong's DD-WRT this has a new arrange of options not available in stock firmware, however i noted the trade has a 15-20% loss on wireless range performance which is not an issue for me.

Other Thoughts: Unleash it's full potential with DD-WRT. Netgear support is not good, they even could not tell me how to set time in the R-7000 because the only time setting available did not work when i last updated the firmware.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello rammolo,

We thank you for your honest review. Please also remember that you can email our experts at newegg@netgear.com for any advanced help.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

This review is from: NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: When it works - Great

Cons: After 14 months, the router no longer work properly. Update latest firmware, backup older firmware and nothing seems to work. The 2.4Ghz constantly dropping and no longer stay on. The only way to get it to work again would be to turn off the router and turn back on.
I'm running wifi scanner to check each and every channel and yet it still doesn't seems to stay on!!!
The worst router I have ever own. WILL NEVER BUY NETGEAR PRODUCT AGAIN.
Contacted Netgear and never heard back. (3 times)
