5 out of 5 eggsHuge speed boost over 802.11g

Pros: I received the Netgear AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000) as part of their review and test program. I tested the R7000 at home where I currently have AT&T Uverse for my internet and connected using the Netgear R8000 router which sits behind the AT&T 2Wire 3801HGV gateway.

As the AT&T supplied 3801HGV gateway is only 802.11b/g and most of my devices are either 802.11n or 802.11ac, I have always been using my own router behind the gateway.

The setup of the R7000 was very easy and straightforward. After unboxing the unit and attaching the 3 antenna, I plugged in the power and connected the R7000 to the gateway. I opened up a browser and entered www.routerlogin.net to enter the setup. The setup automatically detected my settings and determined that I was behind a gateway and in less than 2 minutes I was connected to the internet using their default settings.

I then ran a series of tests to comparing the throughput speed of the R7000 to the R8000 and the 2Wire 3801HGV. I ran the test on my laptop and was connected using the Netgear AC1200 (A6200) USB adapter which is an 802.11ac adapter.

As expected, the speed improvements over the 2Wire 3801HGV (802.11b.g) were tremendous and to my surprise, it was on par with the R8000. To test the speed, I ran LAN Speed Test (Lite) from totusoft using a 100MB test file and writing and reading the file on my Netgear NAS device (ReadyNAS Duo). For each scenario, I ran a series of 5 tests (write and read), eliminated the highest and lowest results and then averaged the 3 remaining results.

For those of you who like numbers, the test results were as follows:

Write Time Write Speed Read Time Read Speed
(sec) (Mbps) (sec) (Mbps)
R7500 8.7 92.2 6.3 126.8
3801HGV 69.3 11.6 50.1 16.0
R8000 7.1 113.2 6.4 125.0

Bottom line is that if you are still using your AT&T gateway for your wireless network, it is time to upgrade to a dual band router. Any device within the last 2 years should be at least 802.11n and in most cases are 802.11ac. It is no brainer to update your router to take advantage of the new technology.

Cons: The R7000 cannot be placed upright like my 3801HGV so it take up more desk space.

4 out of 5 eggsNETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000)

Pros: Top of the line 1GHz dual core processor router with great speed and range. Very easy to setup. Able to connect and start using the router in minutes. The dashboard is very useful. Upgrading the firmware was seamless. Has programmable QoS (Quality Of Service) settings to prioritize my applications like Skype, XBOX, Netflix, etc. USB3.0 is a great addition to attach external HDD as a shared drive. Definitely more powerful than the router I had few years back.

Cons: Large foot print but other than that none for me right now. Will post update when necessary.

Other Thoughts: Overall, the router has fast wi-fi speeds, good range. If you are a gamer, video streamer, transfer lots of files, you will definitely appreciate this top of the line router with all the features.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome router

Pros: I had a comcast modem/router combo before purchasing this router as my desktop in my apartment had issues with reaching out to websites on wifi that was in my office. I decided to get a new router as it was frustrating me that I had to be in really one spot to get a solid signal for anything wireless.

Installation of the router was easy as I did it on my mac with no issues. After installing the router and combining it with a Motorola Surfboard modem, I was amazed at not only how fast my downloads became but how fast web pages appeared on my tower. I was even more impressed that my other wifi devices were able to go into the office with no issues (it was the dead zone in my apartment).

I have my custom built PC, Macbook, 2 tablets (original nexus 7 and original surface), my smartphone and a laser printer all connected wirelessly to the router with 3 consoles hard wired into the router. It is nice to have peace of mind with network connectivity. I am looking to add network storage to the router next with the 2 USB ports that is has.

Cons: Aside from being a bit bigger than hoping for, I only had one issue which went away and havent had to deal with since. One of the benefits of this router is that you can connect to either the 2.4 GHz or the 5GHz connection. I only have my desktop connected to the 5GHz connection. It was initially having issues getting connected to the 5GHz connection but after a couple of days, it connected automatically with no issues and haven't had to worry about it since then.

Other Thoughts: Definitely recommend getting this router if you have a lot of stuff connecting to it and need the network speed

4 out of 5 eggsGreat top of the line router with great speed and good range

Pros: This router has all the features you would ever want or need in a router. Fast wireless speeds (802.11ac) with good range (as long as the router is located on the second floor or up high for single story homes).

The web interface was easy to use and has a nice layout making it very easy to get up an running in no time.

I appreciated the improvement to the firmware upgrade experience. It was definitely an improvement from having to manually go to the manufacturer's website, downloading the firmware, and then uploading the firmware package to the router.

It is nice to see that it supports installing an open source router firmware.

Cons: The router is physically larger than most other routers. it needs to be located on the top floor or up high to get better wireless range/coverage. There seem to be some electronic buzzing/noise when the router has any wireless activity. There was no buzzing/noise when there was any LAN activity. There is no iOS or Android VPN support.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this router provides fast wireless speeds, good range, and lots of features. If you are an average user then this router might be overkill. If you are a gamer, transfer lots of files, and/or an advanced user you will definitely appreciate have a top of the line router with all the features you would ever want. And if you want more you can always install an open source firmware on the router.

1 out of 5 eggsThe worst router

Pros: Speed, range (when it worked)

Cons: Reliability on this thing is a joke. It was great at first but then the router started dropping internet connection on me many many times a day and I decided to contact Netgear Tech Support. Little did I know, their tech support is even worse than their router!. In fact, I have spent many weeks going back and forth with them and the issue is still not resolved yet. I literally did everything they say yet the issue is still there and they refuse to replace my router.

Other Thoughts: I learned my lesson of never ever buy another Netgear product again. Do yourself a favor, buy something else.

4 out of 5 eggsI received this Routers via the Family and Friend program from Netgear.

Pros: Easy to use. I was able to connect and start using the router in less than 5 min. Granted there is a need to activate first. Thee default accounts set up made the equipment ready to use. The dash board is very nice, and the setup are fairly easy with default. The USB for share is also a great additional for me to attach my external USB HDD and use it as a shared drive. The Dashboard also provides non tech savy folks such as my wife to understand the setup. Have to spend some more time in playing the route, but definitely this is more powerful than the belkin router I had few years back.

Cons: Large Foot Print. I was surprised by size of the devices. This found a bit harder to find a place to hide the device and all the wiring. The login URL is unique, which just made someone who is used to the 192 address a bit harder to remember, but after awhile, it is easier. Let's just hope routerlogin.net is not used by any customers. the antenna orientation and how should that be best set up is also a mystery. It is great on the direction, but of course, there is no information as to how to do so properly for non tech person to get the best coverage.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat wireless router

Pros: Reliable
Great wireless coverage and performance
Stock firmware is fully functional
Compatible with DD-WRT and tomato firmware as well

Cons: None for me.

Other Thoughts: I've used this router for almost a year now, and it has been 100% reliable with great performance. Stock firmware is fully functional now, but a little sparse. DD-WRT is much better, allows better monitoring of your network, and also is reliable and has great performance. Tomato firmware is still Beta, but is very usable as well. So you have your choice of firmware, depending on your personal preferences.

Covers my whole house on 5GHz. wireless as well as 2.4GHz., does everything I need a router to do. Best wireless router I've ever had..

3 out of 5 eggsNot a good bridge

Pros: Very Fast.

Cons: I have have it behind a firewall. I must use the hardware firewall as DHCP. When the R7000 is set up this way you cannot use the USB port to share, and it CONTINUALLY loses connection with all the devices in the house. Also, even though Netgear Genie will happily show you your wi-fi map, you can no longer access the settings of the R7000.

Manufacturer Response:

If you want our technicians to take a look at your R7000 for you please let us know. You can email us at any time at newegg@netgear.com-- be sure to provide a detailed paragraph about your problem-- this way they can better assist you.

We apologize for the connection problems and hope to hear from you soon.

4 out of 5 eggsNetgear Experience

Pros: Easy to use. There are default accounts set up already which made the equipment ready to use. Granted though, I am not sure ppl understand the difference between 2.4 and 5 but it was good how it was layout easily for non tech. The USB for share is also a great additional for me to attach my external USB HDD and use it as a shared drive.

Cons: Large Foot Print. I was surprised by size of the devices. This found a bit harder to find a place to hide the device and all the wiring. The login URL is a change too, which just made someone who is used to the 192 address a bit harder to remember, but after awhile, it is easier.

4 out of 5 eggsNetgear Nighthawk 1900 R7000

Pros: So far I am very happy with this unit. Used to have a Buffalo Nfiniti but this one is much better. Coverage throughout the house is great even in areas where I had 1 bar with Buffalo, now I have 4 bars, video streaming is not an issue anymore. I set the guest network on 2.4 Ghz and my guests are happy. I will also not need the Hawking extender hooked up. I only gave 4 eggs because it is still early. I will provide another review later, perhaps 4-5 months from now to confim it values. I did a lot of research before I selected this one over Asus and Linksys. The combo router and Roku purchase is perfect for me.

Cons: Perhaps it is a little big but I have room for it!
