1 out of 5 eggsWorst router I've ever owned

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: None

Cons: Anytime a device sleeps or attempts to reconnect.... the device can connect to the router, but not to the Internet. It requires that I login to the router and reset any parameter. Once the router saves the new setting, devices are able to find the Internet again. It's a tragedy of comic proportions.

Never buy this router. EVER.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Joseph,

We'd like to help you get the R7000 working perfectly and are sorry to hear that you are dealing with this problem. As soon as you get a moment please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com with a copy and paste of your review, your contact information, and the firmware that you have running on the router.

We are once again very sorry that you are having trouble connecting to the internet and look forward to changing that right away. Always remember that you can contact us for help!

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

2 out of 5 eggsNever used as Router

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: NA

Cons: Unfortunately because of the price of this unit vs the price of an EX7000 extender, I thought having the more robust unit R7000 to work as an extender with my router R8000 I'd be in a better position. Turns out the R8000 does not support repeater mode. Made this purchase tough as I spent hours trying to get this setup until Netgear informed me both products "in repeater" mode are not compatible as the R8000 does not support the function. I was really looking forward to having these working together.

Other Thoughts: My egg rating isn't really fair as I intended to use it not as a router which is it's main function. Simply rated for my needs which isn't really fair as well as this unit isn't at fault either, it's my R8000 router......

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Sean,

We appreciate your honest review and are sorry to hear about the confusion of using this with the R8000. If you have any further questions, or need any additional help, please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com.

2 out of 5 eggsSoftware Controls Hopelessly Out of Date

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: Pros: It's cool looking. The hardware side of this router actually works fairly well and the 5Ghz wireless is pretty fast. For that, it has to get at least two eggs.

Cons:
Cons: As stated, while the hardware works, the software controls on this router are a *joke*. Apparently, “parental controls” to NETGEAR simply means preventing my kid from seeing "adult content" online. What it **doesn’t mean** is easily controlling when their internet access turns on and off, when Skype works, if they can play League of Legends at 3:30 on a school night, etc.. ASUS has a robust and EASY method of controlling access, easily configurable by day and time of the week in seconds. ASUS calls this “parental controls”. What Netgear uses is a third party service through OpenDNS, which is a service focused on preventing kids from seeing "adult content". The service does NOT permit an easy way to set dates and times for internet usage based on a nickname tied to a MAC address. OpenDNS requires the entire network to be blocked at times, and then individual clients to be run to circumvent it. If your device does not have one, it won’t work. The amount of time it takes to configure all of this is RIDICULOUS. And even THEN it does not work to stop many routine uses. It is USELESS.

We are having to reinstall an ASUS bridge in our home leading to our kids rooms to deal with this ridiculous situation.

If I had known the LAME excuse for “parental controls” this router actually provided, there is not one chance in hell I would have bought it. Yes, the hardware aspects to this router work pretty well. The software side of this, however, in ALL respects, especially when compared to the ease of use for all features enabled on ASUS’ entire router line -- is totally out of date. The software support is so out of date that the device is, to be blunt, a piece of **** unjustifiably sold at a premium price.

I spend many thousands of dollars a year annually on PC gear. This is the worst PC peripheral purchase I have made in over 10 years, even compared to products I have RMA'd. And please remember that this opinion is about a product that actually *works* as the manufacturer intends. Avoid this router like the plague. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Robert -- thanks for your honest review, we appreciate the feedback. It sounds like overall you're happy with the router and its performance, but the Live Parental Controls aren't what you were looking for.

There are many other ways that you can control access to sites, services, and devices with the router. This is covered in section 5 of the manual, "Control Access to the Internet." You can set up Live Parental Controls if you like, but if you're looking for finer grain control, you can do that by either blocking sites (or keywords) as well as certain services. You can control blocking by device as well as block on a schedule, e.g., don't allow connections to the League of Legends servers on a school night for only certain devices :) There is no need to install clients or anything like that.

Please give that a try and let us know if it helps meet your needs. You can contact us for further feedback at netgearteam@netgear.com.

5 out of 5 eggsUnless you're going to intall ddwrt don't bother

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: Works Flawlessly with good range on ddwrt.

Cons: Netgear's firmware is horrible, slow lan, poor range.

Other Thoughts: Like I said, the hardware is great, but unless you're going to install ddwrt (I use kong's) I can't recommend it.
Flashing and setting up ddwrt is easy enough usually with step by step guides on how to set it up.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lastes

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: Great router with innumerable nice features. Fast USB link, fast wireless, TiVo connectivity right out of the box. Streams perfectly on equipment far from what one would normally deem suitable for modern PCs

Cons: This router worked great for exactly one month beyond its warranty period. Then suddenly the wifi radio took a dump. Shortly thereafter the wired portion of the router is having issues as well.

Other Thoughts: Would I recommend this router? Absolutely not at this point.
At just under $200.00 I expected a lot more than this in terms of its life. And certainly, I expected much much more from Netgear.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello William,

Please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com with a copy and paste of your review and a description of what happened. We are very sorry to hear that your unit has stopped working and look forward to hearing from you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product - with recent DD-WRT 'Kong' firmware. Netgear firmware lacks important features. I own 2 of them!

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: It uses Broadcom chips exclusively, and (therefore) was easy for 'Kong' to develop firmware. NVRAM and RAM storage are large; the chips are FAST in supporting local file transfers; it can even re-segment large packets (from Megabit Ethernet interfaces) down to ISP size (traditionally 1500) and still keep the ISP link nearly "full" (at just 60MB/sec). Hardware seems excellent, no problems after nearly 18 months (on my first box). Just forget about using Netgear firmware (it has no packet-inspection firewall, wonky "upgrades", and etc.). Many of the daily DD-WRT "Kong" Releases after about 12/20/2015 are rock-solid; I am using two different daily builds in my two Routers, with VPN, iptables, dnsmasq. The original 'stock' firmware has ultra-basic implentations of 'VPN' and a dnsmasq 'firewall', no packet inpsection at all - while DD-WRT is like running a true Linux Computer, a "Server" with outstanding network capabilities. Kong firmware is installable from Netgear's own "firmware upgrade" interface, it's a one step process. Both systems have been running for many weeks without any issues. 5G range is very good, 24G range is "OK". (In response to the amazing upgrade of capabilities, I've donated money to the DD-WRT project, to support their work.)

Cons: In order to use iptables, you need to be familiar with it's command line configuration. (And, after interactive "testing", you need to store your configuration as a shell script in NVRAM, or your settings will be lost on power failure.) The GUI handles a lot of things, including dnsmasq, but not the packet-level inspection via iptables. The formatting and use of USB storage is also slightly involved, and that particular area needs a careful review of the individual King builds in the forum (to see whether USB storage had changes or problems).

Other Thoughts: In short: Outstanding for people who need iptables packet filtering, and understand Linux. Maybe a bit overwhelming for people without Linux experience (i.e., those who aren't willing to invest time in learning it). The range for 2.4G is not much better than very old 'G' routers with upgraded antennas. The stock firmware is really bad, so you probably buy something else if you have no plans to upgrade (to DD-WRT, or Tomato, or similar). IMO, The R7000 should only be used with "3rd-party" firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsSo fast, excellent range

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: This thing feels so much faster than the all in one router/modem I was renting from Time Warner. Setup was painless for this, just connect it to the modem after you activate it. I tested the range out to my drive way and it was still working without any issues.
I leave smart connect on so it connects me automatically to either the 2.4ghz band or the 5ghz band. Love that feature, so I don;t have to manually set that up for each device.

Cons: Not really a con but it is a little large, but I already knew that when I ordered it.

Other Thoughts: Since TWC only has a max 300MBs internet speed I saw no need to get anything better than this, although I did want to get one of those tri-band AC3200 routers. The cost could not be justified, so I went with this along with the Arris Surfboard 6141 modem. Yes there is the Arris 6183 (works with TWC) and now the 6190 (too new and not on the compatible list for TWC, not yet anyway,) but again, no need for the higher speed if the highest speed offered by TWC is 300MBs. Love this router and would recommend to all looking for one.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid router (AC1900)!

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: Netgear makes a solid product. I purchased the AC1900 when it first came out over a year ago. So far I've utilized it to its full potential (without getting away from stock firmware). This router comes very stable and solid out of the box... but with a little bit of tinkering and learning the product it really delivers. Of course nowadays all modern routers come with the standard features like DHCP server and QoS.
-The range for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz is reasonable.
- The look of the router is very sleek!
- DHCP server works really well especially when reserving IP addresses.
- Comes with a NO-IP free DSN.

Cons: - Get's a bit hot!
- The USB printer function was pretty buggy under Win 8.1 (I haven't yet tried it under Win 10). This bug appeared in the form as adding several instances of the same printer - thus not connecting to the correct one during a print demand.
- Only 4 Ethernet LAN ports (fills up quick).

1 out of 5 eggsSpeeds drop slowly by the hour then crashes.

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: -It looks nice
-It's wicked fast on 5GHz
-Stock interface is actually palpable unlike Linksys' Smart WiFi interface.

Cons: The 2.4 band slowly drops in speed by the hour until it hits 1.0 megabits and then crashes. Reboots. Rinse repeat. Every few hours non-stop. Unit is on the latest firmware and this router has been out for a while, how the firmware such garbage after so long!?!? I can't even complete a single file transfer like this.

Other Thoughts: Go buy a TP-Link Archer. I'm completely fed up with my $200 dollar router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Sebastian,

We want to apologize that even with the latest firmware that you are having trouble with slow speeds and reboots. As soon as you get a chance please email our experts so they can help fix it. Include, in an email, a copy and paste of your review and anything else that can help them help you faster.

2 out of 5 eggsJust under 6 months running, front USB port dead

This review is from: NETGEAR R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Smart Home Router w/ Arlo Wire-Free Security Camera Support

Pros: WiFi is fast and stable. AP functionality is solid and signal strength is great; covers my entire home (small ranch) and the vast majority of my property (about 1/4 acre). Administration is easy either through the web interface or the app, have had no signal problems since installation back in June.

Cons: Opened up my laptop a couple days before Christmas and got a windows error message that it could not reconnect all network drives; lo and behold the 128gb USB drive I had plugged into the front USB 3.0 port on the Nighthawk had disconnected. I logged into the router, and it doesn't see the drive, I reboot the router, refresh the connection and still nothing. Grab the step stool to get up to the high shelf and pull the drive; it's *burning* hot, I nearly dropped it, it was so hot. Plugged directly into the laptop, fires right up and all the files are there. Curious.

Grabbed a smaller (32gb) drive by the same vendor (Sandisk), popped it into the Nighthawk and refreshed, still nothing. I saw the led on the drive flash when I plugged it in, so I know it's getting power. I pull that drive and after being plugged in for only a couple minutes, it too is burning hot. Plug it into the laptop and again works no problem, files are there.

Plug in a portable hard drive, power light comes on, I hear it spin up and get to speed, refresh the admin page and still nothing. I've tried about 8 different drives in this port now and none of them work.

Other Thoughts: Purchased from another retailer in June. This is a non-essential function of this router (and in fact this router is actually used as an AP behind a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite), but it's one of the main reasons I picked this particular router over other brands and models. To lose that functionality in less than 6 months is disconcerting, and I don't intend on losing my wireless access to warranty this unit. Firmware is up to date, unit is well ventilated and dust free, and never bumped, dropped and rarely even moved. Seems like a simple hardware failure, maybe a defective solder joint or questionable trace somewhere on the board.

Looks like the search is on for a new router/ap...

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Nicholas,

Please remember that we can help you under the hardware warranty by simply emailing us at netgearteam@netgear.com. If you are indeed right that it is a hardware problem that will happily assist-- simply include a copy and paste of this review in the email to get started.
